GREETINGS FROM THE RUSH CHAIRMAN
Greetings to all new OSU Beavers! Congratulations on your
decision to attend Oregon State University to further your
education. The time you spend at Oregon
State can only be enhanced by the friends
you will make and the experiences you will
At Phi Gamma Delta, we pride ourselves in the diversity of
our brotherhood. This diversity is an attribute which keeps us
strong on campus. The varsity athlete, the student leader, the
intellectual, the socializer, and the campus leader all unite to
make Fiji what it is — distinct.
encounter.
just as distinct is our nickname, which was chosen in 1894
Academically, the university offers
many fields of study, some that can be con
sidered among the best in the nation. OSU
offers a wide variety of schools, such as
business, engineering, agriculture, forestry,
and computer science, which prepare JAMES ROBINSON
thousands in those fields of study for the job market.
Another strong point of OSU is its variety of living groups.
These include the residence halls, cooperatives, and of course,
the Greek system. Each fraternity offers a great many advan
tages that cannot be obtained through the other living groups
mentioned.
The Greek system at Oregon State is one of the largest west
of the Mississippi. Comprised of 28 fraternities and 15 sororities,
the Greek system is governed by the the Interfraternity Coun
cil (IPG) and the Panhellenic Council. These are the legislative
and judicial bodies of the system. Officers include Greek com
munity leaders as well as student body representatives. Each
separate fraternity represents its own individual personality' and
style which make for diversity in the system.
at the international fraternity's convention. The name "Fiji" was
declared our official nickname because the high council felt
it would set us apart from other fraternities and appeal readily
to the imagination.
Annual achievements for the Fijis consist of intramural
championship teams, superb social functions, improvement in
scholarship, and an ever-increasing role in campus activities,
as well as community service programs and public relations.
We are a group of men who enjoy enthusiastic participation
and encouragement in helping one another achieve individual
and common goals. With a membership of over 120 on cam
pus, we are striving to accomplish more and more, so we can
live up to the status of being one of the top ten fraternities on
campus.
Only by your own visit to the Fiji house will you be able
to judge what we, as well as other fraternities, are like. We urge
you to make an educated decision, one that you won't regret,
and one you will be proud of for the rest of your days, in col
lege and in life. The choice is yours. Good luck and we hope
to see you soon. — lames Robinson, Rush Chairman

Phi Gamma Delta was founded at Jefferson College in 184B. The men who founded
Phi Gamma Delta based their organization on the principle of secrecy. It is this prin
ciple that has produced our strong brotherhood bonds and unique image. At the
turn of the century, the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta began to expand rapidly. Its
current strength boasts 128 chapters and three colonies at campuses throughout the

During the years, Fiji has produced a multitude of outstanding men: golfer Jack
Nicklaus, former Oregon governor Vic Atiyeh, former chairman of the joint Chiefs
of Staff Admiral William Crowe (ret.), owner of the LA Dodgers Peter O'Malley, actor
John Ritter, owner of Nike Corp. Phil Knight, and former President of the United States
Calvin Coolidge. Phi Gamma Delta has also produced many other political figures
and corporate executives who provide links to opportunity. It is through the individual
efforts of these men and many other brothers like them that the traditions of Phi
Gamma Delta have endured for over 140 years and have established Phi Gamma Delta
as one of the most prominent fraternities in North America.

Kappa Omicron Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta at OSU was granted its charter on
December 30,1921. Our membership is over 13OO strong, representing 35 states and
5 foreign countries. Construction of our current house started in early 1928, and it
was occupied by fall term the same year. Since then, we have put much funding
into the upkeep and improvement of our house, including a complete remodeling
of the first floor in 1979 and refurbishment of the upstairs study rooms in 1985. The
improvement of the Fiji house will continue in our pursuit of excellence and our goal
to always have the nicest fraternity house on campus.

Phi Gamma Delta provides endless opportunities, such as strong scholarship pro
grams, intramural sports, social activities, and valuable assistance in both campus
and community activities. Phi Gamma Delta offers diversity and a place to build lifelong
friendships. In diversity, Fiji finds a way to separate itself from the "Animal House"
and other common fraternity stereotypes, allowing each member to provide his own
personality and style to make Phi Gamma Delta unparalleled. The friendships and
experiences available here are ones that are never to be forgotten. We encourage you
to explore the Greek system, and especially Phi Gamma Delta. It could provide you
with the opportunity and lifelong experiences it has given so many Fijis.

\r\nSOCIAL
m
Social events, along with all other aspects of life at Phi Gamma Delta, have proven to be a major contribution to our success.
We believe that brothers who play together stay together. Our social events offer the individual many opportunities, such as the
opportunity to meet new people and make new friends, that will enhance your time at OSU — and the rest of your life. Our
original party themes and ideas and full participation among brothers has led us to parties with the top sororities on campus.
Social events at Phi Gamma Delta include: barn dances, toga parties. Moms and Dads Weekends, housedances, mystery dates.
Midnight Madnesses, Wake-up Breakfasts, Halloween and Christmas parties — and the ever-popular FIJI ISLANDER! Once again,
our social events should prove to be exceptional next year. Hope to see you here! — Joel Desmarteau, Social Chairman

\r\nXSLADOEREvery two years, on Memorial Day Weekend, the back yard of Phi Gamma Delta is magically transformed into a jungle paradise
as the brothers enjoy the biennial party known as the FIJI ISLANDER.
Rated by Playboy magazine as one of the top five collegiate parties, the Beaver Islander consists of a pre-party which takes
place at a park. Volleyball, softball, and dancing to a live band are just a few of the relaxing activities that occur.
Then, in the evening, brothers and their dates return to the house which has been decorated with ponds, a bridge, a running
waterfall, live fish, and even a duck or two. Fijis and their dates dance the night away with a different live band while feasting
on a wonderful catered dinner.
In the morning, the entire crew, dates and all, heads off to a vacation hideaway at the ocean or in the mountains to enjoy
the sun and fun for the rest of the Memorial Day Weekend.
The FIJI ISLANDER is an excellent party which is remembered fondly until the next and provides a great release just before
the stress and strain of finals week for spring term. — Kris Terry Publications
