Dr. Parrish Retires
As Purple Legionnaire
This semester we would like to pay a grateful tribute to a
man who has pushed Sigma Mu "toward excellence" for the
past fourteen years - Dr. William Parrish (Phi Mu '57).
Although Dr. Parrish has long been associated with the Sigma
Mu chapter, his life as a Phi Cam began at Westminster
Universit^r Dr. Parrish joined the farulrv at We.srminsrer in
1955 following his graduation from Kansas State. He soon
developed close bonds with the Fijis at Westminster who in\ated him to become an initiated brother and seive as the fecul-
ly advisor to the chapter. Dr. Parrish agreed to the arrange

one years. When Dr. Parrish arrived at Mississippi State in
1979, he offered his ser\ices to the chapter and immediately
began serving on the BCA. A year later Dr. Parrish became
the Purple Legionnaire to the chapter. He describes his rela
tionship with the chapter as being "long, happy, and fruit
ful." Dr. Parrish has won many awards, including the IFC Top
Advisor in 1986, the Durrance Award nominee, and Order
ofOmega Top Advisor in 1990. Perhaps Dr. Parrish's greatest

FALL RUSH
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings, brothers! Well, another semester is winding down
here in Starkville. So far my term as president has been quite
pleasant (I guess anything would seem good after being
treasurer last year). In January, I challenged the chapter to
live up to our full potential and to renew our commitment
to our motto of "Toward Excellence." I have not been
disappointed.
With the number of men going through formal rush declin
ing last year and continued drop-off projected, our first goal
of the semester was to have a productive spring rush. We did
rush hard and pledged eight excellent men. This large spring
Rush has had a successful start this spring. Two letters have
already been sent out inviting rushees to Fiji Island, which
was April 30 - May 3. Due to limitations on summer rush
party dates mandated by the Inter-Fraternity Council we will
be limited to one summer rush party. This party will be in
Starkville and will include water skiing and a band party.
We appreciate all graduate support we have been given and
would definitely welcome any more. If you have potential
rushees, please send us information about them.

number, to go along with the 19 out of 20 we initiated in

the fall, has us well braced for the projected decline in rush
numbers. By the way, our 95% initiation rate for the fall was
by far the best among fraternities.
Another area I have been particularly proud about this
semester is community ser\'ice. All the fraternities are par
ticipating in the "Adopt-a-School" program, a program in
which fraternity members volunteer to tutor fourth graders
who are having a hard time in school. Twenty-one ofour guys
took this opportunity to serve their fellow man — the largest

children.
The Eijis have been dominating the basketball courts and
Softball diamonds this spring. We are closing in on number
one in all-school spoits. Currentlv, we are a close second. With
a little luck and good performances from our pillow polo
teams and horseshoe pitchers (an event Fijis have vet to regain
the title in since Seth Roberts' notorious two year reign), we
should have a good shot at the title.
This spring has also seen our first successful fundraiser in
niBoc
quite some time. We sold raffle tickets at $5 apiece for a shot
at free tuition (an $810 dollar). We netted over $2300. With
the money, we decided to reward ourselves with a new televi
sion for the house and an upgrade ofour house sound system.
Next semester we plan to raffle off a cool one grand and raise
even more monev.
While doing all of these things we are still keeping our grades
up and hoping to improve on last semester's 3.1 (of course,
the highe.st on campus).
If any of you would like to make suggestions of how we
could better pursue our goal of excellence, please give me a
call at (601) 324-6171. My ears are alwavs open to good ideas.
Good-bye for now from Fijiland.

GRADUATE NEWS
PIG DINNER
The t\vent\'-third annual Norris Pig Dinner was a success,
both from the graduate and undergraduate perspectives. From
getting all the man\' letters out to the graduate brothers to
bur\dng the pig's head, the undergraduates enjoyed unequaled participation this vear. Yet the most pleasant surprise of
Pig Dinner was the enormous graduate attendance. Graduate
brother Greg Weeks (88) ran the dinner with ease. All three
speakers, Kevin Walters (78), Terr)' Fuller (82), and Kendall
Moore (84), left us astounded. In all, the twent\'-third an
nual Pig Dinner will be a memor)'that we will cherish forever.
