Francois (ME '94) already leading the charge for
Rush 92, we are confident we will again have a
successful rush this coming fall.
President's Letter
Brothers,
Just as every other year, the spring quarter
has brought its traditional flurry of activities. As
usual, there is some type of event every week
end until graduation. Fiji Isle, Road Ralleye, and
the Rho Phi Open, to name a few, are just
around the corner. The men of Rho Phi are al
ready working hard to make all of these events
enjoyable. We have also stressed several aspects
of chapter operations. Rush and campus in
volvement are just two areas where Rho Phi has
been centering its attention. We have also been
working with the House Corporation to make
several improvements to the house. As always,
Rho Phi is striving hard to live up to the ex
cellent reputation and image our chapter has al
ways maintained.
Rush
Rho Phi is also beginning to assert itself in
leadership positions on campus. Brother Kelby
Ridenour (ME '93) was recently elected as IFC
President, the first Phi Gam to hold the post
since Scott Kirkpatrick (ME '90). Senior Mark
Boenke (CE '92) has served the past year as
Secretary of the American Society of Civil En
gineers, Steve Allison (AO '92) has served as
President of Sigma Pi Sigma, an applied optics
honorary, and Dave Merrell (ChE '93) is current
ly the vice-president of the American Institute of
Chemical Engineers. Furthermore, junior Doug
Sowder (ME '93) is currently running for senior
class president. It's good to see the men of Phi
Gamma Delta developing their leadership skills
in areas other than the fraternity.
Under the leadership of senior rush chairman
Brian Sullivan (Math/Econ '92), the chapter this
past fall pledged 27 outstanding young men.
Brother Sully used several new ideas this past
fall, including enjoyable - yet sometimes haz
ardous - activities such as go-carting and putt-
putt golfing. Due to the chapter's dedication in
rushing new members, our chapter size will
soon grow to 81 active members upon the in
itiation of our pledges. With sophomore Jim
The Rho Phi House Corporation has also
been busy. At their last meeting they opted to
make several improvements to the chapter
house - improvements amounting to more than
$20,000. Scheduled projects include all new fur
niture for the second story of the chapter house.
In addition, the outside trim of the house will be
repainted, maintaining the elegance of the Phi
Gamma Delta house.
Several changes have also taken place within
the House Corporation itself. Graduate brothers

ACTIVITIES
I would also like to take this opportunity to
thank resigning president Mark Ress (ME '76)
During the winter quarter the Rho Phi chap
ter enjoyed skiing the "peaks" first at Nashville,
IN, and then again at Paoli, IN. Some graduate
brothers returned to help teach a few of the undergrads proper skiing techniques both on and
for all the time and work he has contributed to
the fraternity. Additionally graduate brothers
Don Mighell (Texas '56), Frank Guthrie (Han
over '50) and Bob Barker (ChE) continue to
show the level of support to the chapter which
they have maintained for the last twenty-two
years. Without the efforts and continuity of all
these graduate brothers (and many others), Rho
Phi would not be where it is today.
In closing, I would like to invite all brothers to
return for any of the upcoming spring activities.
Just as the undergraduates are looking forward
to the end of another academic year and the
warm days ahead, we are also looking forward
to seeing many of you back at the Fiji house.
For those of you who cannot make it back this
spring, I hope you have a great summer and
hope to see you at Homecoming 1992.
Proud to be a Fiji!

off the slopes. The annual Super Bowl party
was again held at the house.
In the spring quarter the chapter has engaged
in a Fiji pool tourney in search for the champion
"Fiji Fuzzy". Plans for the Rho Phi Open are be
ginning to developed. This year, all Fiji's from
across the state of Indiana will be invited to par
ticipate, hopefully bringing in a wide range of
duffers and pros. We hope to see some great
participation from our grads!

Intramural Sports
The Rho Phi intramural teams had a very suc
cessful season during the winter quarter.
The bowling team, which consisted of Kelby
Ridenour, Damon Crouch, Aaron Bultman,
Chad Powers, Chuck Dewey, Jason Bone, Dave
Merrel, Brad Miller, Derrick Clark, Mark Rosenberger and Mark Boenke, brought home the
championship. Each member contributed to the
victory as the season consisted of 6 weeks of
bowling. A trophy was presented to the chapter
on behalf of the bowling teams as well. Con
gratulations guys!
Baseball
So far this season, the Rose-Hulman baseball
team is picking up where it left off last year. Af
ter a slow start (4-2) on the southern trip. Rose
returned north and went on a seven game win
ning streak. At mid-season the team has a 12-3
record and is ranked 26th nationally among
The basketball team also fared very well this
season as they went on to a 5 and 2 record.
Spring basketball is beginning and the team
hopes to carry their momentum forward and
have a successful season.
Currently, the Fiji athletes are competing in
Softball, basketball, and outdoor soccer. Each
team hopes to be successful in their respective
leagues. The whole chapter is also getting ready
for Greek Games. We are practicing hard and
ope to be competitive in the games, which are
NCAA Division 111 teams.
Key wins early in the season include a doubleheader sweep of ICAC rival DePauw University,
a convincing victory over Ohio Northern Uni
versity, and a 2-1 thriller over Albion (Ml) Col
lege. With ICAC play set to begin, the Engineers
look to improve on their third place finish of last
year.
Fiji diamondmen include: Dave Cowans (ME
'92), Dave Merrell (ChE "92), Todd Holthaus
(EE '94), Shaun Miller (ChE '95), Derrick Clark
going to be held during Parents Weekend on
(ChE '95), Chad Zigler (ME "95), Ryan Walke
May 2.
(ChE '95), and Mike Arvesen (EE'95).

Public Relations
Rho Phi has been a busy chapter in the way
of public relations. The chapter has participated
in many different areas. Such things as the
Adopt-A-Highway program, Happiness bag,
Lighthouse missions, and Farrington's Grove
historic society were all part of Fiji brotherhood
•1
service.
Whether it be keeping
(Adopt-A-Highway) or just
our roads clean
helping mentally
handicapped children enjoy a visit form Santa
(Happiness Bag), Rho Phi has really made
strides at reaching for that point of the star
called service.
Future plans for Christmas and Halloween
parties with Happiness Bag, a community picnic
with police and firemen (as guests), parents' din
ner, as well as other fund raising projects. With
the welcomed support of all Fiji's of Rho Phi
chapter, the journey to excellence can become a
reality.

Purple Garter
ChE '93
On March 28, 27 undergraduate brothers and
their dates headed off to French Lick, Indiana
for Purple Garter. Couples began arriving
around 2-.00 to try horse-back riding and do
some exploring. Later in the afternoon the lU
game caught most of the guys attention while
the girls were preparing for dinner at 7:00. The
r
following Garter Ceremony was kicked off by
pledge Michael Arveson '95 and wrapped up by
graduate Dan Kocwn '91. Dancing continued
until the night was ended by a stunning per
formance by the three undergrads singing "Un
answered Prayers" by Garth Brooks.
This was our first year at French Lick, The re
mote atmosphere of the resort added a nice
touch to the event. Hopefully next year we will
be able to return to French Lick for Purple Gar
ter '93.
