December 1993
From the Purple Legionnaire
Dear Brothers,
Hello from the front end ofanother semester. Yep,
another football season is well underway and it seems to
be a good one.I hope that you have had a chance to
get to a game and even to stop by the house.
I always make a point to ask you to go by the house when
you arc in Chapel Mil. Mostofyou don't go by,and I
certainly understand. It's hard to get throu^ the traffic, and
on mostSaturdays, there isjust not enough time.
Well,I am not asking you to go by for yourself. I'm
asking you to go by for all the brothers currently at the
house. Believe it or not, they still put a lot ofeffort into
sprucing up the house for a ball game and they work
hard to keep Epsilon on top. Recendy, they garnered
10 pledges from one ofthe smallest rush classes ever.
Over the past three years our men have led the way
among fraternities in Risk Management(read
"responsible drinking") while still maintaining the social
status we are all used to.
I work with these men all the time. I see the
problems they fece and the inventive, mature ways they
solve them.I am very proud ofthem,as a group and as
individuals. Even though the times have changed, they
are the same men we were at that age.
So the next time you're up at a game, stop by and
introduce yoiuself to just one undergrad. Then tell him
you're glad he's there to carry on the Phi Gam tradition
... just as you did.
Pergd,
J. Ed Peele '77

Hard Work Enables Epsilon to Remain
THE StrongestFraternity at ChapelHill
By John Fcnncbrcsquc '94, Chapter President
/Vhis year the University of North Carolina celebrates its
^^bicentennial. At this time, ail Carolina graduates will
consider their experiences at the oldest and greatest public
university in the nation. At Epsilon we hope that you take
this opportunity to remember the great experiences you had
as an undergraduate member ofPhi Gamma Delta. You have
a great deal of history and pride to recall from your fraternity.
Established in 1851,Phi Gamma Delta was the first fraternity
at the University of North Carolina. 1929 marked the year
Vance Hall became the first fiatemity house in the state of
North Carolina. The precedent for leadership by Epsilon can
be found at its inception.
Newton D. Baker has defined fiatemity as "an association
of men selected in their college days because of their
adherence to common ideals and aspirations." Epsilon ofPhi
Gamma Delta fits this definition comprehensively. Every
single person in this chapter has always worked eamesdy to
ensure that Epsilon will remain the strongest fraternity in
Chapel Hill. This year is no exception. We have gathered our
resources to make the chapter as strong as it has ever been.
Undergraduate brothers, the House Corporation and our
esteemed Purple Legionnaire Ed Peele '77 have all worked
intentiy to make sure that Phi Gamma Delta involves itself in
the community while emphasizing the strong traditions that
separate Phi Gams from others. We currently provide leaders
in the struggle to deal with risk management policies
implemented by the Greek system. Establishing a long-term
relationship with the North Carolina Special Olympics gave
Phi Gam the strongest "hands-on" philanthropy program on
campus. We have also maintained our reputation as the
helmsmen ofthe Chapel Hill social scene while
simultaneously winning an award for academic performance.
Phi Gamma Delta has offered many opportunities to its
members to excel and become successful, happy individuals.
It has given us all an education beyond university academics
and a great head start into adult life. Epsilon is very important
to all of us, and we hope that you remember your days as a
Phi Gam as some of the best in your lives.
Happy Houdays!

Olympians fr-om throughout the state were in attendance for the weekend. Our job
was to set up and coordinate the various events.
This event inspired us to forge a long-term relationship with the North Carolina
Special Olympics. My brother, Patton McDowell, serves as the program director for
the State Special Olympics. He recently held a seminar explaining how we could
embark on this philanthropic venture. As a result, we have agreed to volunteer our
assistance for several local, regional and statewide events throughout the years.
We are very excited about this new relationship as are the Special Olympians and
the frne organization that makes this event possible. We feel that the small amount of
time that we will be investing vtiU be not only a worthwhile use ofthat time but also a
gratifying experience for the Phi Gam brothers. In this activity, everyone is a winner.

have Michael leading this process as IFC
