TAU DEITERON OF PHI GAMMA DELTA
March 1993
The University of Texas at Austin
Since 18H3
In Memoriam: David C. Bland
T he Tau Deuteron Chapter of Phi Gainma Delta was
deeply sorrowed in late December of 1992 to learn of
President of the National Interfraternity Conference. Even
after retiring from the position of Arehon President, he
the death of David C. Bland, Texas '38. Mr. Bland was one of
remained active in Phi Gamma Delta by attending the biannual
the most active alumni that Tau Deuteron has ever had. He
Ekklesiai and staying in contact with International
who did everything he could to
Headquarters in Lexington,
Kentucky. He left a lasting
better both Phi Gamma Delta
legacy with both his family and
was a former Arehon President
and the Tau Deuteron chapter at
the University of Texas.
During his days at the
University of Texas, Mr. Bland,
following in his father's
footsteps, played center for the
Longhorn football team. Upon
graduating from the University
of Texas and law school, he
became a trial attorney who
went on to have a long and
successful career. One of the
highlights of his legal career was
when he tried cases before tbe
United States Supreme Court.
Phi Gamma Delta. Mr. Bland is
survived by his faithful wife of
fifty years, Trinka, and their two
sons, Fred and Buck,and their
daughter, Kathleen.
The Tau Deuteron
Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta is
very blessed to have alumni like
Mr. Bland who give both of their
time and of themselves to make
the chapter and fraternity great.
I feel very confident in saying
that Phi Gamma Delta and Tau
Deuteron would not be where
they are today with out David C.
Bland.
Mr. Bland's involvement
with the alumni affairs of Phi
Gamma Delta began in the midI960's when he took the position
of section chief. In 1970, he was elected Arehon Treasurer,
and later in 1972 he became Arehon President. While Mr.
Bland was President, one of his greatest accomplishments was
supervising the successful move and transition of the
International Headquarters from Washington D.C. to
Lexington, Kentucky in 1973. After leaving the helm of
Arehon President for Phi Gamma Delta, Mr. Bland served as

a fun and relaxing (Jhristnias liuiiday, ihe chapter is back
fur the spring semester. Everyone was happy to return,
although most were more excited about Spring at the Fiji House than
taking on another set of classes.
Academically, the chapter continues to excel with the ever
increasing entrance requirements here at U.T. This semester, we
have 13 students in the Plan II honors liberal arts program, two men
in P.P.A. Honors Accounting, two more in Honors Business, and nine
Phi Gams have been inducted into the Order of Omega Greek honor
society. As a Chapter, our last Spring cumidative average of 2.98 and
the Actives Fall average of 2.93 both ranked as the fourth highest
GPA among the 28 fraternities now at G.T. These GPA s are
significant because they are head and shoulders above everyone we
rush against.
Kush continues to be one of our strengths. We recently
initiated 40 new Texas Fiji's from 13 different cities and towns across
Texas. We are proud to say that II of these young men are Tau
Deuteron legacies, continuing Texas Fiji's rich tradition. As always,
we have you to thank for our success in rush. Your recommendations
and support are always key elements of our rush program.
The house is looking great and running well. Mom Watkins
continues to impress and Wade Roberts, our new cook, is doing a
great job. We were very lucky to gel Wade away from Austin Country
Cabuiel for ihe 1993 year
New Cabinet
Club last November, and he's cooking the best meals we ye ever
tasted. Aubrey Brown is dependable as ever in Ivory s old position.
This past fall, the chapter continued to give back to the
community by taking part in numerous service projects Son.e of the

Message from Mom
I'ledue Class
Greetings,
1 hope those of you who attended Parents weekend in
the fall had as much fun as we did! It was wonderful having
you here.
We are now looking forward to the Golf Tournament,
Ladies Luncheon and Pig Dinner on April 23rd and 24th. Please
come; you'll have a great time!
As most of you know, our living room has been quite
bare in recent years. Last fall, Mark Lum came to me and
asked if! would take a look at some old wood-frame couches
stored in the back house, and see if I thought we could use
them. Boy, they were rough-but did seem to have potential as
they appeared to he indestructible. We embarked on a joint
venture. I got three upholstery fabrics so the members cou
make their choice. The pledge class sanded, stained and
varnished the wood, and we wound up with three com orla
and rather good-looking sofas that make a nice conversation
This is a beautiful house in a lovely setting, and I think
we all more fully appreciate it when we can share it. So on
be a stranger, we'll leave a light on for you.

Message from the
President of the Board of Trustees
To ihe best of my knowledge, this is the first time the Tau
Deuteron Alumni have heard from the President of the Board of
Trustees. Since the inception of the Board's active involvement with the
fraternity three years ago, I am proud to say that the fraternity has
turned the corner on numerous problems that had sidelined the
fraternity's and Board's efforts to take a more proactive approach to
managing the fraternity's affairs.
With those problems behind us, the Board continues to meet
with the fraternity several times a semester to focus on twelve critical
areas of its development: pledgeship, house operations, rush, the Lake
Club, social, house management, scholarship, awards, alumni affairs,
intraniurals, public relations/philanthropy and the IFC. The Board and
the Cabinet have set up a committee for each of these areas and are
determined to have each of the 130 members of the fraternity serve on
at least one committee. Each committee member reports to the Board at
every Board Meeting as to the status of their committee's projects.
I believe that in the history of Phi Gamma Delta at the
University of Texas the lines of communication have never been more
open. As a result, the Board has come to know the (iabinet, the rush
captains, and other leaders of the fraternity very well. The Board also
interacts with the international fraternity concerning matters that affect
Tau Deuteron.
As a Board we could not be more proud of the organizational
ability of the fraternity, their dedication to the standards set by the men
who went before them, and their appreciation for the need to be
excellent in everything they do. I can truly say that the fraternity has
never been in belter hands, particularly at a time when fraternities are
