Beta Chi Phonathon a Success
On Tuesday,August 17,nine Fiji brothere Bill Marsh '55,Bill Luce'56,Wayne Pariter
'56,Joe Walton '65,Mike Danjezck '72,
Mark Tone'78,Dave Dowling'83,Ted
Duikin '93 and Bob Davies - gathered at the
Univeraty Center, had dinner and started to
call brodiers throughout the country.
At about the same time, brothers Doug
Breen '68,Bmce Bogenrief'68 and Doug
Paige'71 gathered in their New Jersey ofBces
and did the same.
The results for the two hours of
telephoning was most encoura^g.About
$15,000 was pledged although we were able
to contact only about80 of500 brothers. A
follow-up letter was sent to those we were
unable to reach by telephone. When you
receive this letter, please give it your
consideration. Our house and its fiature are
worth the investment.
The $15,000 pledged tt> date will get us
about one-third ofthe way to our goal of
$45,000 to complete the upgrading detailed
in last ^ring's The B.C.Fiji. We still have to
replace the windows with energy-efficient and
maintenance-free windows.Also,the interior
wood doors must be replaced with fire-rated
doors to comply with local building codes.

Althou^ it is not widely known, your contribution is tax
deductible ifyour check is made out to Lehigh Univeisity and you
earmark it for "Living Accommodations at Phi Gamma Delta." We
are not suggesting that your gjving to the university be directed
totally to our chapter. We are reminding you that you can
contribute to the university and earmark any portion to our chapter.
Be assured, these funds are kept in a separate account by the
university and are used only for house repairs and/or improvements
with the consent ofthe alumni and the university.
So with this in mind, please consider a portion ofyour gift to
Lehigh be directed to your fiatemity. It will be wisely used and
most appreciated.
One final comment on earmarking funds to the chapter
house; When the house was deeded over to Lehigh in the mid'60s,
our agreement was that our alumni could direct their giving to the
chapter house through Annual Giving, making the gift tax
deductible. Some ofour alumni have done so for many years,
although the number has decreased drastically over the years.
Unfortunately,Lehigh has never provided us with the names of
these donors, making it impossible for us to thank them. We are
told that in the future, this information will be provided.
Our sincere thanks for your support.

Notes from Our Brothers
From Charlie Reinhart'82
"I am sorry that I could not be involved in the
phonathon, but I hope that the enclosed check (for $250)
will help this worthy cause. I wasn't sure if it should have
been made payable to Lehigh or to Fiji, so I played it safe
and made it out to the Beta Chi Association. I knew that
you would be able to deposit the check this way and get
the funds to the appropriate source.
"I would like to close this letter with a few words of
thanks. I think it is safe to say that your tireless efforts on
behalf of our chapter over the years have neither been
appreciated nor recognized nearly enough. Perhaps it is
only as our lives and careers take us farther away from our
college days that we can truly understand how difficult it
is to stay as involved as you have been. So let me take this
brief opportunity to say a heartfelt 'thank you.'"

presenting a plaque and gifts to Andy Koval,
our cheffor the past 25 years.
As promised,Hg Dinner'93,which was held on Saturday May 1,1993,was an outstanding success. Begnning with the Beta Chi Assodatbnhosted cocktail party at the house on Friday night and proceeding through to the main event on Saturday night, everything went as planned. A
great time was had by all.
Dave Tanis'63,our guest ^xaker, and his wife were our ^jedal guests on Friday night, along with invited Lehigh staffand faculty members.
Over 100 undergraduates and alumni gathered for cocktails and dinner Saturday night to hear Brother Tanis's inspiring and humorous
comments as well as to pay tribute to Andy(A.K)Ifoval, our cheffor 25 years.
Rod Flanlon '69 chaired the committee honoring Andy.It was most heart-warming to hear the many comments from brothers present,in
addition to A.K's words. Over $3,600 was raised and presented to Andy as gfo and cash. Our sincere thanks to Rod and his committee.

At the Top of the Hill
Fiji Pride is Evident
By Andrew Twiggar'94

By John Babson'95,Chapter Historian
Things couldn't be going better at the Hut
right now. We've got a lot happening and
everything is running smoothly.
Currendy,37 men live in the house
and 10 men live offcampus, giving us
one ofthe highest occupancy ratings and
one ofthe largest houses on the Hill.
Our brothers are, as usual, very
involved in campus activities. Many
bothers are involved with varsity sports,
the Interfratemity Council,and many
other interests such as the STAR Big
Brother Program.
Last year's pledge class of19
outstanding men has gamered many
compliments from the other fraternities
as one ofthe best classes on the Hill. The
class also helped us to earn the IPG
Recruitment Award at the Greek Awards
Banquet in April. Ted Durkin '94 won
the President's Award at the banquet.
The M semester has started out well for the undergraduates at the Hut.With the addition of
the 19 initiates, the house is fiill and we have 10 brothers living offcampus. The sense of
camaraderie among the undergraduate brothers is as strong as ever.
The brothers built a brick walkway along the front ofthe house. Considerable woik was
also done to our new pool room.We removed the wall from AK's pantry and e^qjanded
the pool room, which is a popular place to relax before and after meals. The cold dorm has
been throu^ major renovations. Partitions have been constructed that divide the cold dorm
into a double and a tiple, separated by a audy locxn.
At the beginning ofthe semester, more than halfthe house went on a camping trip with
the Alpha Phi Sorority. We all drove three hours to an isolated area owned by Andrew
Twiggar'94.We^nt the day and night hiking, fishing and sitting by the campfire. It was a
very enjoyable experience^ and we hope to do it again in the future.
The brothers are also active in the community. The second annual "Luigi Fiji" all-youcan-eat ^ag^ietti dinner will be held at the house in November to benefit the Bethlehem
Boys'Club.Because ofthe success oflast year's dinner, we feel that we can raise over $1,000
this year. Brothers also plan to participate once again in the Field ofScreams,a haunted
house for area children.
On the lighter side,Fiji and Chi Phi have been involved in a rock battle for some time
now.We feel that we have finally won. After they continually threw paint on our rock,we
felt that the same level ofretaliation was unoriginal,so we had a backhoe remove their rock
fiom the ground. Needless to say,our rock has remained purple for some time now and
"Fiji" is still painted on it with pride.

An IM Championship Season?
1993-94
ByToddGoldbcig'94
Beta Chi Officers
Beta Chi is continuing its strong tradition of^rts excellence. Many brothers are
participating in Division I athletics, club ^rts and intramurals.
Ted Durkin *94,Chris Crugar'96 and Mark Tereller'96 are all returning lettermen on
Lehigh's baseball team. The team has just completed six weeks oftraining that started at the
beginning ofthe semester and will continue to work out through the winter in anticipation
ofthe upcoming season.
Kyle Yerk'96,from Westchester,Pa.,is a member ofLehigh's golfteam. He competed in
four tournaments this semester and his scoring average was 81. His best finish was 12th of
86 at the Naval Academy Open Classic.
Daniel Petrecca'95 from Princeton,N.J.,is playing midfield on Lehigh's lacrosse team.
He participated in two and a halfmonths ofpreseason training, which is often referred to as
fall ball. Lehigh will play in the Hofetra Invitational Tournament October 23 in
Farmingdale, N.Y.
Beta Chi also has six brothers on the Lehigh ice hockey team.Seniors Jim Mirenda,Bob
Maloney,Todd Goldberg;juniors Rod Mancuso and John Babson;and sophomore J. R
Gulka all play large roles in the team's success. The Lehigh ice hockey team won the Lehigh
Valley Invitational Tournament on October 18 by defeating Millersville University 7-5.The
Engineers will compete in the Eastem Collegiate Hockey Association(ECHA)this season.
Ihe team's main qpponents will be the U.S. Naval Academy, University of Maryland,
University ofDelaware,Penn,West Chester University and Towson State University.
Junior Jason Lazar has done a fantastic job organizing IMs. We are currently first overall
because we were champions ofthe soccer tournament. Fiji also looks like the heavy favorite
in football and has a great chance of being overall champions by the end ofthe year.
