REFLECTIONS FROM THE PAST
I frankly did not consider joining a fraternity in my first three years at Western because, with 4
brothers, I felt I had already lived in one. However, the fun we had in building our chapter was a
very rich experience. I learned:
Commitment: Without this, no one else would do the job for us;
Salesmanship: We learned to believe in our product and sell it to new members/pledges;
Responsibility: We were in charge of our destiny and the chapter at year's end was a reflection of
our maturity;
Teamwork: As we went through this experience, we gained a tremendous respect for the contribuions of each member and how, hopeless as individuals, we succeeded as a whole;
Humour: Without humour, all is lost. To take the time to laugh and enjoy made our efforts produc
tive and gave us the motivation to get together.

My fraternity experience was not one which began on an upbeat note. Mike Labossiere, Char
les Hayward and myself were initiated in the fall of 1981. At that time we were burdened with a substanial debt and had only three other members who were going to continue academically after the
end of the year. In order to make it a success, Mike and his assorted underworld friends continual
ly threw parties on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. These parties were meant as rush tools
and also provided much-needed financial help. Upon our next rush, we initiated four new members
being: Steve Rush, David Plaxton, George Lock and John MacKinnon. These four men, along with
Mike, made the core of a fraternity which, in fact, was able to start a turnaround.
Non-stop parties, inter-fraternity sports, charity drives and participation in numerous other high
profile events made Lambda Omega a success. The refurbishing of the house and the rushing of
OTher good individuals made it one of the strongest on campus. In terms of quality of men, it was
the strongest group of men I had known and, in fact, still is.
Maybe the best measure of change that occurred over the four years that I lived in the house
was in its elections. I was given the President's position uncontested in the same term that I
years later, that position was hotly contested. Debate over the philosophic direction
or the house was so strong that it caused the formation of factions and lobbying (at the time, there
were approximately 40 members).
1/
\r\nAlthough my career has made it such that I have not participated in fraternity actions over the
last few years. I have always thought it contributed most to my personal growth. It helped shape
my post-graduate career (Law school and M.B.A.) and it shaped my friendships. Steven Rush and
the other members of the fraternity who came to my wedding (1992) will always be considered life
long friends certainly the closest I have met.

A SALUTE
Special recognition goes out to those brothers who are involved in coaching kid's sports, sitting
on local community boards, sitting on professional boards, trying their best at work, working in
their churches and doing all the other things that encompass living and making the communities
they live in a better place. Involvement and commitment can sometimes be difficult in a world filled
with time pressures, work commitments, marital strains, health concerns, financial worries and all
the things that happen every day to question our sense of self worth and esteem. Congratulations
on your great work!

THE 1971 GAMMA BARBEQUE AND BARRY LLOYD
Once upon a time, the house had a fastidious neighbour named Barry Lloyd, a teacher I think,
who, along with being a good husband and father, was (overly it seemed to us) concerned with '
local property values and the effect that 627 was having on them.(Yes, there was a time when
people actually lived in the houses around us). Relations were never exactly congenial with Barry
but we tried hard to keep things presentable at least on the north side and stop Ken Fidlin from
bouncing footballs off the hood of Barry's car.
The low point, however, occurred when we had the Gammas over for a Sunday afternoon bar-
beque. Tim Day and Dennis Wilson (Dill) did a great job of firing up the old brick barbeque pit that
was just outside the kitchen window, up against BartV's property line. Amidst great billows of
smoke, a fine time was had by all.... except, no one noticed that Barry had lefy his second story
windows open nor that a south v/ind that day had carried two hours of barbeque smoke through
them into his house, not to emerge until he and his family, dressed in their Sunday finest, returned
and opened their front door!
After several apologies, sincere but with laughter barely suppressed, since it all was rather
funny, we even, as I recall, succeeded in pressing a beer into Barry's hand as a sign of goodwill
However, he kept asking us for weeks after to let him know when the next barbeque was to be
held.

THE GREAT SILVERWARE HEIST - 1970
The pledge class, led by George Isaac, was feeling playful. One night, after doing two weeks'
worth of dishes for the brothers, George decided to hide the silverware before he left for the eve
ning. What better place than under the front seat of then-President Murray Coulter's 1961 black
Chevy (with Canadian Tire woodgrain tape along the rocker panels holding the doors together).

\r\nFITT QUIZ
The answer to the Quiz is BARRY ROGERS. He advises that the "Ranch" is located in Heaven -
great scenery, great weather, great fishing, great golfing and great downhill and cross-country
skiing. There is even a little bar. A Skirt could be held at the natural hot springs and pools. He pas
ses on to Mike Biggs and Bill Szego that he downhill skis much better now "but it wasn't as a result
of their instruction".

\r\nTHE FINAL WORD
In response to John Chandler's poem, Frank Smeenk, that master of words has submitted the
following gem:
On the strength of one kink in the fable,
Dependeth the plight of his claim;
Who knows how he may not be bested?
Live life so that cares are a game.
