Fall 2016 Edition
Zeta Brings Home the Hoosier Grail
After the conclusion of last semester’s intramural competitions, the Zeta
Chapter won the Hoosier Grail Award, given to the most involved and
successful fraternity in intramurals. Competing with more than 20 other
fraternities, we finished on top with 401 points (40 points ahead of the next
closest team.)
Perhaps the most notable victory of the year was that of the A basketball
team that won the overall intramural basketball championship. The
basketball team displayed pure dominance throughout the season,
winning 8 of 10 games by 20 points or more. The basketball team’s road to
the championship was finally tested in the semi-final competition where
the team found themselves down 12 points with only two minutes left in
the fourth quarter. However, the squad, riddled with great three-point
shooters, got hot from behind the arc in the final two minutes of the game,
pulling within one point of their possession of the game, FIJI’s Sander
“Dome” Mohn (2016) hoisted a mid-range jumper that fell short,
From left: Intramural chairs Ben “Professor” Paese
(2018) and Sam “Pampers” Gleaves (2018)
but Michael “Tebow” Bower (2016) f ound himself in perfect position for a timely rebound and put-back that put the FIJI
team up 1 point as time expired. The championship final match that followed was much less interesting. FIJI’s highpowered offense finally clicked and the Zeta brothers brought home the championship with a 21-point victory.
The handball team also earned a championship last year. Despite little experience, the natural athleticism of the team
proved too much for their opponents. The Zeta brothers also saw semi-final appearances in soccer, dodgeball, and table
tennis. Timmy “Mantis” Karich (2018) led an undermanned soccer team to crucial wins that took them to the semi-final
where they finally met their match, a well-practiced Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity team. Connor “Brown Bear” Brown (2018)
and Sam “Dungeon” Cooke (2018) dominated on the dodgeball courts while Sam “Gam-G” Wisen (2017) finessed the ping
pong tables.
Safe to say it was an intramural year to remember. The brothers now look forward to another Hoosier Grail victory. All
three football teams are yet to lose and the soccer squad is 1-1.

Last spring, the FIJI bike team rode in the 2016 Little 500,
which was the fastest overall race since 2002. The FIJI
bike team consisted of sophomores Frank “Fingers” Reed
(2018) and Bobby “Hammer” Coyle (2018) as well as
freshmen Isaac “Scarface” Sullivan (2019) and Brad
“Pythons” Blank (2019). The FIJI bike team was one the
youngest teams in the field. Despite being in one of the
fastest races ever and being such a young team, the FIJIs
still managed to finish in 11th place. FIJI received the
Dixie Highway Award for moving up the most positions
in the race after starting in 26th. All team members are
returning now as juniors and sophomores. With the help
of new freshmen, the bike team plans to use its
experience to maintain FIJI’s strong reputation among
the Little 500 teams in this year’s race.

Dear Members of the Fiji Community:
Your House Corporation has been busy throughout the last several months completing the final details of the building
on 431 N. Woodlawn. The Building Committee has demonstrated exemplary Zeta presence by attending to each and
every detail, interfacing with the contractor and the architects, as well as the Bloomington community, in creating what
we all believe will be the finest Chapter House in the nation.
Special round of clicks to the members of our Building Committee, including Co-Chairs Pat Lindley (1984); and John
Stewart (1975); Monk Dunn (1976); William Miller(1962). This group of dedicated brothers has been meeting on average
every two weeks in Bloomington at the building cite insuring that each and every detail is resolved.
The House Corporation has been working closely with the undergraduate chapter in implementing new programs
dealing with all facets of fraternity life as we continue to experience opportunities for growth and change in the
University community. I commend our very strong Cabinet made up of undergraduate Brothers Joe Froehle (2017),
President; Michael Blauert (2017), Treasurer; Joe Morris (2017), Recording Secretary; Michael Mattei (2017),
Corresponding Secretary; and Chris Kahn (2017), Historian, for their dedicated persistence and unyielding leadership of
Zeta Chapter during a time of great change within the University community. Without their strong leadership, Zeta
would not be in the place it is today leading the campus in philanthropic endeavors, campus organizations, intramurals,
as well as other facets of student life.
The House Corporation, by and through the efforts of John Morris (1982), Jeff Andress (1983) and I continue to drive the
Beechwood Second Century Campaign to bring the campaign to a close. You will soon receive a last call notice for
contributions and commitments to be placed on the recognition wall for the Chapter for decades to come. It will be those
brothers who have committed to this project, who saw the need and responded to the call to build a Chapter House for
the second century, who will be recognized for decades to come with a permanent wall of recognition. Please don’t miss
the date and the cutoff which is October 15, 2016. Contact either me (pck@lawdogs.org), John Morris
(morrisjohn@me.com) or Jeff Andress (631nfcda@gmail.com) for information.
Lastly, please mark your calendars so that all brothers can be present to celebrate at the dedication of our new chapter
house on Saturday evening, December 3, 2016, in Bloomington. We are currently putting together the final agenda for
the celebration and would encourage all brothers to be present at this very historic event. Though the undergraduates
will not occupy 431 until early January 2017, the graduate brothers and undergraduate chapter will symbolically move
the chapter house from 631 E. Third to 431 N. Woodlawn that day and celebrate the bridge between the traditions and
values of 631 E. Third and the new opportunities that will be available to our undergraduate chapter at 431 N.
Woodlawn.
Until we meet again, and hopefully see each other on December 3, on behalf of your House Corporation and the hard
working brothers of Zeta Chapter, I thank you for all that you do for Zeta Chapter, and for your commitment in both
time, talent and treasure and your continuing interest in the hopes and aspiration of our undergraduate chapter for years
to come.
Fraternally,
Zeta House Corporation

Graduate Brother Network Update
The Graduate Brother Network focuses on developing professional networking skills by connecting undergraduates
with graduate brothers that are willing to not only help develop these skills but possibly provide internship
opportunities. The program also includes a four-week mentorship program with older undergraduates that focuses on
resume building, email etiquette, and other necessary qualities to effectively communicate with these distinguished
alumni. undergraduates.
What Graduate Brothers Can do to Help:
We have received interest in helping out the Network but we have not been able to capitalize on landing as many job
placements as we have hoped. Thus, we are trying to implement more of a structure for the Network moving forward.
We have seen a huge interest in the graduates serving as mentors. However, given there are fewer undergraduates
than graduates we are really looking for help in finding more potential internships and jobs through Graduate
connections. As graduate brothers, you can help by contacting Michael Blauert (2017)
(mjblauert@gmail.com) to get involved as a mentor or to inform us about an open position that you are aware of and
provide career guidance to undergraduates.
Ekklesia, State Day, Zeta is Recognized Nationally and Statewide
At state day this past spring, the Zeta chapter was
proud to bring home eight awards. Michael “Tebow”
Bower (2016), former treasurer, won Most Outstanding
Member, while McCoy “Narc” Wegner (2019)
won
Most Outstanding New Member. As an
organization, the Zeta Chapter was awarded first
place for Recruitment and Most Outstanding
Community Service Event, while being awarded runnerup for the Most Outstanding Community Service, Most
Outstanding Campus Involvement, Most Outstanding
Graduate Relations, and Most Outstanding Chapter
awards.
At the 168th Ekklesia in Boston this past summer, out of
the 160 Phi Gamma Delta Chapters nationally, Zeta
received Honorable Mention for the following awards:
Cheney Cup: all-around excellence in scholarship,
fraternity relationships, and general collegiate activities
Jordan Bowl: excellence in scholarship
Zerman Trophy: excellence in campus involvement
The Zeta chapter was also recognized for having a
chapter GPA above the all men's average of our host
institution for 57 years in a row, the longest such streak
in the nation.
The undergraduates are extremely proud of our
accomplishments and look forward to continuing our
pursuit of excellence, in typical Zeta fashion.

\r\n431 Dedication
Saturday, December 3, 2016
Dear Brothers of the Zeta Chapter:
Schedule of Events
It is with great excitement and gratitude that your House
Corporation announces to the Brotherhood of Zeta
Saturday,
Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta the dedication ceremonies
to be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at our new
Chapter House at 431 N. Woodlawn, Bloomington, 3
3:00 PM
Indiana. The ceremonies will begin in mid-afternoon that

day and will conclude prior to 7:00 p.m.

fire that destroyed Beechwood at 631 E. Third in
February of 1910. This will be an important day in the
history of our Chapter as we open a new Chapter House
for our next century on the campus we all love.

- Undergraduate Update Last Spring, the Zeta Chapter earned an overall GPA
of 3.27, ranking 5th out of the 31 IFC
Fraternities. Congratulations to Will “Randal”
Keith (2019), Keith “Dobby” Hedges (2018), and
Scott “Clutch” McClary (2016) for earning a 4.0
GPA.
- Zeta Welcomes PC ’20 The most recent pledge class of 2020 has joined
the house. This year’s class has 32 new members
from seven different states, boasting an average 3.8
GPA, 28 ACT, and 1850 SAT. Of the 32, nine are
direct admits to the Kelley School of Business, and
two are recipients of the prestigious Kelley

last class to live at both 631 and 431.

MAKE YOURSELF IMMORTAL!
Phi Gamma Delta is teaming up with Donate Life to increase the number of organ donors across North
America. This joint venture is called the Immortal Phi Gam project.
There are more than 125,000 people waiting for an organ transplant in the United States and Canada,
with approximately 150 names added to the waiting list every day. About 79 organ transplants take place
every day, but sadly, approximately 22 people die every day because they did not receive an organ in time.
The good news is that together Phi Gams can make a tremendous difference. One organ donor can save
or improve the lives of up to 50 other people!
Making yourself immortal is an easy 3-step process.
1.
Go to www.phigam.org/immortalphigam and register at the bottom of the web page.
2.
Click on the link on the same web page that will take you to Donate Life’s map page. Click on the
state or province where you are licensed to drive or live and register to become an organ donor. This step
is unnecessary if your driver’s license in the U.S. or insurance card in Canada already shows that you are
an organ donor, but register again if you are uncertain.
3.
Tell your parents, spouse, family members, and loved ones that you want to donate your organs
when you die.
If you are already a registered donor through your state or province, please register with the Fraternity as
well at www.phigam.org/immortalphigam to help track the number of brothers who have made this lifesaving decision. •
