Mock Con a delight to all
The 26th Washington and Lee Mock Convention was held on
February 13, 2016, and the Zeta Deuteron chapter was in the
thick of the celebrations. For myself, the convention weekend
was the culmination of a yearlong involvement with Mock Con
as the State Chair for West Virginia. Luckily, I did not have to
do all these myself, as I had a great delegation, including many
members of Phi Gamma Delta.
Designing and building a float for the parade down Main
Street was the most fun, but also challenging. Having rented a
12x6 trailer and obtained the use of sophomore Michael Cuilik’s
truck to pull it, Tyler Kaelin and I started brainstorming for
ideas. Inspired by West Virginia’s long history of coal mining,
and feeling very confident in our slapdash construction abilities,
Tyler and I decided to recreate a coal mine.
Our mostly Fiji delegation had created a fourteen foot tall,
two-story monstrosity of a float. The bottom level was our coal
mine, while the top level was the “surface,” complete with fake
grass and a two-person string band. Other delegations looked at
our float incredulously. One State Chair confidently predicted
that it would collapse before we left the staging parking lot.
The entire float was slightly tilted, underbuilt, over budget, and
generally haphazard. It was perfect.
Luckily, we did not experience our own personal mineshaft
collapse. The West Virginia rambling wreck proudly rolled down
Main Street, blasting Country Roads and earning applause all
along the way. From my perch atop the float I had quite the
view of town, and I thought about how this was surely the most
memorable ride through Lexington I had ever had. In the end,
our float placed third out of 56 competing floats.
My delegation not the only one with Fijis. Senior Zack
Taylor’s New York delegation had large numbers, as did the
Maine and Virginia delegations. Treasurer Lenny Enkhbold’s
stunning impersonation of Donald Trump on the New York
float even landed on the front page of the Roanoke Times.
It was an event that I will surely remember for the rest of
my life, and I am glad that I was able to experience it with the
people I will surely remember for many years to come.

\r\nwhy i
joined
fiji
Fiji was one of the first
fraternities that I got to
know. The first impression
I got from the guys is that
they are really laid back
and genuine. As the year
went on, I got to know
more of the Fijis and that
impression fortified. The
friendship and bonds I
developed with Fijis came
naturally. Some of my
closet friends were rushing
Fiji too, which made me
even more comfortable at
Fiji.
When bid day came, it
was not exactly the best
scenario I was expecting.
Some of my friends did
not stick with it, and it was
a tough time. However,
I really like the Fijis and
I see myself there over
anywhere else. I believe
that we could make this
work so I stuck with it. I
made a good call because
the support I have received
from the fraternity really
convinced me. I think Fijis
are a group of intelligent,
laid back and euthusiatic
brothers who genuinely
care for each other. I see
this brotherhood and
I believe it will make
my college experience
unforgettable and
influence me positively
after college. That is why I
joined Fiji.

a letter
from our
house mom
While going through
old stories and a box of
treasures found around
Fiji, I came across a
video done in 1989
about the backstories
and valiant efforts to
rebuild the physical and
emotional structure of
the brotherhood after the
tragic fire that killed Tom
Fellin in 1984.
While planning our
Norris Pig Dinner for this
year, I realized that this
would have been Tom’s
30th class reunion. I
talked with the brothers
and we decided to make
this year an extra special
event honoring the life and
mission of Tom and his
brothers.
I invite all brothers to
the celebration with special
recognition to the class
of 1984. We have heard
from the class of 1966
that they’re coming back
to celebrate their 50th
reunion! Plan on meeting
here on April 30, 2016
during alumni weekend to
reminisce and rekindle all
that has made this house
and brotherhood so great.
Feel free to bring,
momentos to add to our
ever-growing memory
books.

Dear Brothers of Fiji,
I hope this newsletter
finds you well. Another
year in Lexington is
almost complete, and
I could not be more
excited about the
direction our beloved
house on Preston Street
is going.
We have a small, but
very eager freshmen
pledge class that I think
will continue the Fiji
tradition of being some
of the most honorable
and friendly people on
campus. I hope you will
meet them, and the rest
of our fraternity, during
our Spring Alumni
Weekend in late April.
I would also like to
thank Tyler Kaelin, ‘16,
and Lenny Enkhbold,
‘17, who have led this
fraternity this year to new
heights. I can only hope
future generations of
Fijis will be as passionate
about this fraternity as
they are.
Finally, I write to ask
all brothers to find time
to return to Lexington.
Whether that is over
Alumni Weekend or
when passing through,
we will welcome you with
open arms.
P!
Nelson Helm,
President-elect
2016-2017
