From Mattern: "i[nitiated] May 5, 1866 . . . enlisted, Erie, Pa., Aug. 21, 1862, for three years as a priv., Co. H, 145th Regt., Pa. Vol. Inf.; participated in battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg; at last place, June 16, 1864, was taken prisoner and confined in Andersonville Prison until Apr. 28, 1865; honorably discharged as orderly sergt. at Harrisburg, June 2, 1865 . . . ."
