Phi Gamma Delta In World War I

It was estimated during World War One that over 6000 brothers were in military service; later speculations stated over 8000. Including veterans who were initiated post-war, the number is doubtless much higher. Phi Gams served in many armies, including the US, Canada, Britain, France, Italy and even Peru. At least one brother served in the Germany military as a surgeon.

A total of 127 Fijis were known to have given their lives in service during World War I between April 22, 1917, when the United States declared war on Germany, and November 11, 1918, Armistice Day, and in the subsequent occupation of Germany.

The following honor roll of our war dead was compiled from the roster of Gold Star men presented to the Victory Ekklesia in Chicago in 1919, and published (with corrections and additions) by Cecil J. Wilkinson (Ohio Wesleyan 1917) in the "Fiji Thesaurus" edition of The Phi Gamma Delta magazine, October 1947.

• Aupperle, Harold Vincent (Stanford 1917) - American Field Service, then American Red Cross; died 6-14-1919 of typhus in Serbia.

• Barron, Harold Casimir (Bucknell 1918) - ensign, naval aviation, USNRF; killed in fall of airplane at Cape May, NJ 4-29-1919.

• Briggs, Charles C. (Union 1899) - captain, Medical Corps; died of complication of diseases as a result of service in France, at Schenectady NY 3-2-1919.
• Brooks, Sidney Johnson, Jr. (Texas 1918, Kansas 1919) - first lieutenant (posthumous), Air Service; killed in air accident while taking last flight to qualify for commission at Kelly Field, Texas 10-13-1917. Brooks AFB (formerly Brooks Field) is named after him, as is the Brooks Memorial Park on the base.
• Brown, Malcolm Cotton (M.I.T. 1919) - first lieutenant, 90 Squadron, Royal Air Force; killed by a fall with his airplane due to defective mechanism in England, 7-23-1918. At MIT a fund and award for advanced physics is named in is memory; the former MIT chapter's house corporation was named after him. He is also memorialized at Harvard University's Memorial Church.
• Chapman, J. Wilbur (Ohio Wesleyan 1879) - Director of Religious Observation for the Federation of Churches with the Army in France; died of pneumonia in New York City 12-25-1918.
• Chiles, Marcellus Holmes (Colorado College 1918) - captain, Co. A, 356th Infantry; KIA on the Meuse, near Barricourt 11-3-1918. Congressional Medal of Honor, posthumous. Memorialized at the Medal of Honor Memorial at the Arkansas State House; an American Legion post in Denver bears his name. Chiles Avenue is at Fort Carson, Colorado.
