PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Those of you who are going through formal Rush are confronted with a difficult decision which may
be of considerable importance to you during the remainder of your college career. You must first decide
whether you wish to be a member of a fraternity. Then you must decide which one of the six Knox fraterni-
ties you would most like to join.
Unfortunately, Rush Week is often a period of confusion to the prospective fraternity man, and his
decision is too often based upon the emotions of the moment rather than upon a perceptive evaluation of the
situation. Whatever the basis for your judgment, you should remember that your decision is essentially a
personal one. In the final analysis, I would advise you to trust your own personal judgment above all else.
I hope, however, that each of you has taken advantage of the benefits of deferred rush. I hope that you have
attempted to determine what being a fraternity man would mean to you. Specifically defining the nature of
the fraternity experience is an impossible task. Each individual member chooses the degree to which he
participates, and consequently benefits from his fraternity membership. Each one of the present members
of Phi Gamma Delta has his own personal view of what it has meant to be a Fiji. I will briefly relate my
own.
Most important of all, Phi Gamma Delta is the men, themselves, who have become friends that I re-
spect and enjoy being with. To me, friendship and mutual respect form the basis of fraternity. Upon this
foundation is laid the opportunity to participate in the character-building experience of self-government and
group decision-making. A fraternity is a major financial operation which requires responsibility and know-
how if it is to succeed. Beyond that, the members of a fraternity are free to decide what kind of fraternity
activities they want. For instance, if the brothers of Phi Gamma Delta decide that there is little to be gained
from building a traditional Homecoming float, then it is up to us to use our imaginations and come up with
a better substitute.
Phi Gamma Delta is also attempting to make a meaningful contribution to the Knox community. The
Phi Gamma Delta-sponsored Viet Nam debate which you may have attended earlier in the year, was one of
many efforts in this direction.
Furthermore, we encourage our members to participate in campus-wide activities on an individual basis.
Fijis are prominent in activities such as varsity sports, Student Senate, student newspaper, etc.
But this is just one man's opinion about fraternity. Your own opinion is even more important, for it is
upon that basis that you will decide what action to take at the conclusion of formal rush.
We of Phi Gamma Delta take great pride in our chapter, and ask only that you look at our record and
make your decision with this in mind. We hope that you will meet the members of our chapter and will read
this newspaper carefully and critically. Consider your own values and goals in relation to those which are
represented by this fraternity, and, above all, make your decision a personal one.
Yours is the choice - ours is only to aid you in making it objectively, and to extend our best wishes
for a pleasant and prosperous four years at Knox.
Sincerely,
MICHAEL VLAISAVLJEVICH, President

FRESHMEN and FINANCES
by
Tom Collins
When a freshman goes to college, he very seldom budgets or foresees the expense of joining a fraternity,
especially during his first year when he is not able to save room costs by living in the house. In evaluating
our present financial position, our treasurer has taken this problem into account, and has formulated a budget
that calls for the least amount of pledge billing in recent years. All fraternity billing is done by the term and
is due the first day of the term it covers. This year, the freshman pledges are billed less than one-half as much
as active brothers. To explain other fraternity costs such as board, room, and active dues, we find the follow-
ing figures helpful:
