PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Those of you who are going through formal Rush are confronted with a difficult decision which may
be of considerable importance to you during the remainder of your college career. The first question that you
must ask is whether you wish to be a member of a fraternity, and secondly, you must then decide which one
of the six Knox fraternities you would most like to join.
Unfortunately, Rush Week is often a period of confusion to the prospective fraternity man, and his deci-
sion is too often based upon emotions of the moment rather than upon a perceptive evaluation of the entire
situation. I might suggest that during Rush you attempt to build a foundation on which to base your final de-
cision. Whatever the basis for your final judgement, you should remember that your decision essentially
a personal one.
I would hope that each one of you determine in your own mind what being a fraternity man would
mean to you. Each individual member chooses the e gree to which he participates within the fraternity, and
as a rule, he gains personel enrichment in proportion with that participation.
It is difficult to accurately define a fraternity experience as there are many inherient intangibles through-
out your association with a certain group of men. I feel at this juncture to make at least some small effort
to attempt to describe what constitutes this definition.
First and foremost, a fraternity is friendship and mutual respect derived from close relationships that
evolve over a four year period and often endure throug hout the whole of one's life. It is upon this foundation
of companionship and respect that the cornerstones of self government, of group decision making and of re-
sponsibility are laid. We at Phi Gamma Delta feel that we possess these necessary qualities that make
a
fraternity a rewarding experience.
The fraternity which you decide to pledge should have goals and aspirations similar to those which you as-
possess. The members of the Gamma Deuteron Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta share common goals and
pirations. As you can see by reading this "paper," we feel that a fraternity should make a significant con- and
tribution to the Knox campus and the Galesburg community. We are proud of our campus leaders,
we thrive on the strength of the varied interests and abilities of our members.
We of Phi Gamma Delta take great pride in our Chapter, and ask only that you look at our record will read and
this newspaper carefully and critically. Consider your own values and goals in relation to those which
make your decision with this in mind. We hope that you will meet the members of our chapter and are
represented by this fraternity, and, above all, make your decision a personal one.
for a pleasant and prosperous four years at Knox.
Yours is the choice - ours is only to aid you in making it objectively, and to extend our best wishes
Sincerely,
DAVID L. YORK, President

What Is A Fraternity?
it's a home without parents and sisters, just brothers
it's the Romper Room on Saturday night
it's the first place you go and the last place you leave
it's a social institution with party weekends
it's sloshing around in an inch of beer after rush
it's making decisions and carrying them out
it's doing things together
it's sharing common ideals, goals, ties and coats
it's learning from books and your brothers
it's being a part of the school and helping the community
it's "B" league basketball and homecoming
it's friendship for now and for life
it's an irreplacable friend and teacher
it's memories
