PRESIDENT'S LETTER
The nature of the fraternity at Knox today is changing - away from the traditional, toward conscious-
ness. We are keeping only the best things which that system had to offer: the good times. It is important
to any man who is thinking of affiliating himself with the system here that he be aware that his experience
will be unique, both because of the atmosphere of change, and also because of the basic differences lent
to our system by the Knox environment.
Unlike the systems on large campuses, there is no need here to belong to a fraternity simply for social
prestige (there is none at Knox); one can hardly become lost at such a small school; and the limited social
life offered by Knox is available equally to nearly all - especially in view of the progressive attitudes to-
ward the men's residence halls. Likewise, there is little need to join a fraternity simply to get to know
people or to belong to a group; the style of living at Knox makes this necessary.
Fraternity life here offers to the individual many things which are much more important than any of
the superficial aspects of social life and group participation. On a completely different level are found
the benefits gained by the members in their personal development. This development comes from the pleas-
ures - and equally from the problems - to be had in living with a group of men who run their own
house: officers, cook, budget, parties, meetings, bad plumbing, where to buy what, which rules?, how to
enforce them?: respect and consideration for others.
If you want to learn about people, to know things about yourself, to do things that can't happen any-
where else, then one of the fraternities here may be good for you.
I hope that you will remember only two things: first, maintain a sense of humor toward the whole
environment, and second - and this is the most important thing which I can offer - in choosing a fra-
ternity, the members themselves and the men with whom you pledge are the only things to consider - all
considerations will fall into proper perspective from there. The fraternity is nothing more than its mem-
bers, and the worth of your experience will depend entirely upon them. Pick men you like.
KERRY KRUMSIEK,
Phi Gam President
What Is A Fraternity?
it's a home away from home
it's a Sunday afternoon in front of the tube
it's a social institution with party weekends
it's a game of wall pong
it's sharing common goals, ideals, ties and coats
it's being a part of the school and helping the community
it's making friends
it's an experience
it's open kitchen
it's memories
OUR PROVIDER
One of our greatest prides at Gamma Deuteron is the fine quality of food
provided for the Brotherhood. The woman responsible for contented Fiji stomachs
is our fine chef Eleanor Sargeant. Eleanor has consistently proved her skill to the
Brothers and their guests with her tempting dishes. It is said that a good cook is
difficult to find. We are very fortunate, for we have found an excellent one indeed.
No matter if it happens to be a post-game party or a highly organized function like She Gam weekend,
whenever Fijis get together for a social event the spirits and excitement run high. The planned parties, of
which Phi Gam has three, are legendary in their own time.
She Gam weekend, first introduced by the Knox chapter, is a two-day party held in the fall term. This
involves pledging and initiating Knox Co-eds into our sister fraternity of She Gam Delta. It is usually held
on the same weekend as the Knox-Monmouth football game and is one of the most outstanding parties on
the Knox campus.
The Rose Formal, held in the winter term, is our formal party. The new pledge class takes charge
of organizing and entertaining at this party.
In the spring term Phi Gamma Delta holds its Fiji Island party. The entire fraternity goes native and
decorates their hide-away along a Pacific Island motif (complete with costumes and island food).
Outside of these three big parties the Fijis have post-game parties, exchanges with the sororities, and
various situations that erupt into a fun-filled time for all.
FRATERNITY OF PHI GAMMA DELTA
MAX UTSLER is a junior American studies major from Gilson, Illinois.
What can be said about a guy who lists his activities as barn party coordi-
nator, Blondie, Homecoming car driver, calcium, and the Register-Mail?
Not that Max isn't a lovable little kitten who watches too much tube (of
all kinds), plays fish basketball, good football and baseball
he is, but?
T. PAUL ADAMS, senior freak, from Hairlip, Illinois, is the Phi Gam
answer to the Beta's charge of stereotyped, V-necked FIJI twinks. The
house's most controversial and well liked bowler-legal counselor, T. Paul's
pic rests in the FIJI Hall of Fame right next to Johnny Carson and other
greats (?).
DICK HESSER is currently majoring in heterosexual behaviorism, eco-
nomics, Junior's rack, and memories of Hartsdale, N.Y. summers. The for-
mer Sandy Koufax of Knox College, Dicky tries hard, but he can't fool
the bro.
HAWK LIND, fugitive from Drew House, occupies his time with the
ontological eschatology of primitive orthogenics. A junior sociology-
religion major from Joliet, Hawk has been active in all phases of pipe
cleaning, track, proctorships, and the GD FIJI.
