A Plea for Closer Association With Our Alumni
The success of a fraternity from year to year depends
nearly as much upon the activity and interest taken by its
Alumni as upon the men in the active chapter. A man
does better work scholasticly, enters into more activities
and upholds the standards of his fraternity better if he
feels that the eyes of the Alumni are upon him to encour-
age him to succeed and to frown upon him if he fails.
We here in Delta have tried to keep in touch with
our Alumni through news letters and the annual publica-
tion the "Caduceus" but at the best this only informs you
of what we are doing and tells us nothing as to whether
you are still interested in us, pleased or displeased with us.
Undoubtedly many of you have suggestions that would
help us but we do not hear them and do not profit by them.
What we ask is closer personal relation between the act-
ive chapter and the Alumni. We want to profit by your
experience and more nature judgment. We ned your help
in rushing. In the near future there should be an addition
made to the house. You cannot appreciate the necessity
until you have seen it. Why not call and see us sometime
and let us know you are still interested in the welfare
of Delta.
Obey that impulse!
RUSHING
Bucknell is growing and we all want Delta chapter to
keep pace with its growth. As the number in the Fresh-
man class increases, the number we have to select from
increases, but the difficulty of finding the best in the class
increases also. Next fall there may rules governing rush-
ing in force here so that it behooves us to have as much
information concerning desirable incoming freshman as
it is possible to obtain in order that we may direct our
efforts towards them. In the past our house has been a
valuable asset in rushing but other fraternities on the
campus are now erecting very attractive hauses also that
rushing is becoming more of a problem with us. We are
asking that the Alumni help in this work by cooperative
rushing with the active chapter. This will aid, not in
widening the field from which we recruit the Fijis of to-
morrw, but also in supplementing our judgment of the
acceptable material with the more mature views of older
men.
The last leaf of this booklet is a rushing blank. If
you know of any desirable men who are considering enter-
ing Bucknell next Fall, will you fill out the blank as in-
dicated and send it to:-Ellis R. Defibaugh, 447 Campbell
Street, Wilkinsburg, Pa. More of these blanks can be
obtained from Brother Defibaugh upon request. The
earlier 'Deffy' receives the filled-out blank the more the
rushing committee will be able to do toward making the
man recommended a Fiji.
SECTION CONVENTION
This vear our section Convention was held at Lehigh
University, April 13 and 14. Our delegates were S. H.
Rickard and J. A. Davis. Our Section chief. A. E. Clatten-
burg presided at the meetings. The Section went on re-
cord as recommending that Davidson and Toronto be
granted charters at the Ekklesia, and that our old charter
at North Carolina be restored to them. The delegates
went against liquor in the Houses and at College or
2
Fraternity functions, and they also recommended that a
pin larger than the official be adopted. Our chapter re-
port for the year was the best of any of the chapters in
the section and we were highly praised for the financial
condition we were in. The convention closed Saturday
night with a banquet at the Chapter house. Next year we
will have a joint convention with section 3 at Beta Chap-
ter, University of Penna.
SYMPOSIUM
Symposium will be held this year Friday, June 8. We
would like to have as many of the alumni back as possible
for present indications point to the best Symposium ever
held. Save that date, Brother Alumnus.
A NEW LINK
Richard P. Custer formerly of Penn State Chapter
was affiliated here during the first semester.
PHIL LYON'S VISIT
The Nation Field Secretary, Brother Phil E. Lyon,
paid Delta a visit the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th of April.
It was the first time Phil had been around for nearly two
years so that many of us met him for the first time. In as
much as the personnel of the chapter had so largely chang-
ed since his last visit, he had an opportunity to judge us
by that "tell-tale" first impression and tell us just what
strangers coming in think of us. He gave us some up-to-
the-minute "dope" on organized hospitality or "O. H.", as
it is known and also recommended a few minor changes in
our financial system.
From here Phil, accompanied by nearly the entire
chapter, went to Gamma Phi chapter at State College
where we saw Bucknell defeat State in two well played
games.
Whatever the Field Secretary's private opinion of us
may have been, officially we seem to have checked fairly
well. We hope he enjoyed his stay with as much as we
enjoyed his being here. We are looking forward to an-
other visit which he promises to make us in June.
