BROOKS PALMER '94 LEADS CHARTER
DAY PROCESSION IN APRIL THIS YEAR
'
Moyember 1964
Bearded and walking ahead of a pro
cession with a cane was Brooks Palmer,
class of 1892. On Charter Day, which was
in April of this year, Brooks led the Alum
ni Association of Cal up the steps and into
the Hearst Greek Memorial Theater.
Each class, from 1892 to 1963, had a
standard bearing its year and carried by
a representative.
One gentleman from the
class of 1911 was saying to someone near
him,"President Wheeler used to beg us to
come to the Charter Days so the speakers
wouldn't be embarrassed." Then he began to
to talk about seeing Theodore Roosevelt at
one of the ceremonies as another man re
marked to a friend, "Fifty years ago I rode
to Charter Day as a student. Today, I had
to walk for ten blocks."
Brooks listened a while.
Soon the Uni
versity hymn began within the theater.
Brooks was not listening now, but remem
bering the years he served as an attorney
at law from 1895 to 1916. He recalled al
most 40 years of service after that to the
Allen Press.
He remembered the first war
involving the whole world. He remembered
his proposal of marraige to his wife, Anita,
in March of 1918.
When ceremonies are over, everyone,
both young and old, leave a memory behind.
Brooks is retired in Berkeley and lives
at 2256 Summer Street.
