SPRING 1970
ARCHON PRESIDENT BRAINARD VISITS KAPPA OMICRON
Kappa Omicron was honored on May 14, 1970 with a visit by national
president Henry S. Brainard. President Brainard, talked freely with the
brothers relating his experience as chief executive, with many compliments
bestowed on Kappa Omicron. Also present at the evening meal were: Donald
Johnson (Archon Sect), Ronald Enna (Past Field Sect. ), F. A. "Doc"
Gilfillan (Charter Member of Kappa Omicron), Jess Truax ( Pres. K. O.
Assoc. ), Denny Hedges (Purple Legionnaire), and a host of K. O. alumni.

FIJIS ACTIVE IN COMMUNITY AFFAIRS
The men of Kappa Omicron are making a fine effort towards winning
the Cheney Cup for community service this year. K. O. started out by
holding a one day fast and giving the proceeds ($100) to the Easter Seal Fund.
Prior to Christmas a party was given for several of the Farm Home children
to bring to them a small amount of Seasons cheer and faith in man.
\r\nBeginning winter term, the rook class renovated a barn, with the
proceeds going to a sponsorship of a young Phillipine boy, Antonio Carbello.
The rooks will continue to donate towards Antonio, and provide school supplies,
food, and extra-curricular equipment which he could have never had otherwise.
At the start of spring term the Fijis walked the Corvallis streets selling
tickets for a talent show, proceeds going to the Benton County Association
for Retarded Children.
Our latest effort has been the collection of empty cigarette packs, with
each pack providing one minute of non-cost time in an iron-lung for a young
girl at Government Camp, The Fijis are capable of providing many cartons
if present trends continue.
All in all. Kappa Omicron has performed admirably for its community
and fellow man.

FIJIS IN CAMPUS POLITICS
Kappa Omicron had several members involved in student government
this past year. Ken Ross (71) in Engineering, held the distinguished position
of A. S. O. S. U. Second Vice-President. The job entailed work on many execu
tive committees, with Ken presiding over the Student Senate. Brother Ross
entered spring term with the hope of becoming A. S. O. S, U. President, but
unfortunately lost the race after the election was contested. Although he had
set his sights on the presidency, Ken will undoubtedly remain in campus poli
tics in some particular facet.
Another Fiji, Judd Webber (73), has become quite involved with extra
curricular work. Judd, a freshman in Political Science, was the Freshman
class publication chairman, and also served on the Freshman Executive Com
mittee. Spring term ran favorably for Judd as he succeeded in being elected
Sophomore Class President and a seat on the Book Store Board of Directors.
Among others who participated in political activities was Bill Graham
(7 0) in Engineering, who served as President of the American Institute of
Aeronautical Engineers (O. S. U. chapter). Brother Graham also worked
steadily on the Navy R. O. T. C. program at Oregon State. Larry Six (7Z) in
Fisheries and Wildlife, held the position of Vice-President of Thanes, a
sophomore men's service honorary, and also served on the Senate Service and
Elections Committee. Kappa Omicron is proud of our representation in campus
activity and h,as promises of continuing good work.
KAPPA
OMICRON AND SCHOLARSHIP
The Fijis of Oregon State once again showed an improvement in all
house grade average, boasting a 2.61 G. P. A. This represents an overall
improvement of .23 over a three term period. Leading the house in grades was
Jim Higgenbothem (70) with a perfect 4. GO G. P. A. for the second term in a row.
Other outstanding scholars were Ken Ross (71), 3.50 and 3.59; Larry Six (72),,
4. 00 and 3. 53; and Andy Martin (73), 3. 73 and 3. 30. Winter proved to be the
term for the 23 Fijis who topped the 3.00 (all B's) mark. The sophomores
showed the best house improvement, leading the way for a 2.9 5 junior-senior
average winter term.
THE FIJI LOOK AT INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
They have returned: Larry Zagata (70), Richard Hobin (71), and John
Snodgrass (71). Experiences followed them from the Blarney Castle in Ireland
to the home of the greatest people on earth, Mr. and Mrs. Poc of Barcelona,
Spain. They went prepared to study but not just between the hours of 7-10 p. m.
in a room similar to 205. Their classes began from the minute they awoke,
and lasted until they were able to find a place to sleep. International education
is unique, for the most valuable lessons are learned outside the classroom.
They do not remember the pages they read but they seem to instantly recall
every person they shared a moment with. Their experience did not end upon

re-entry into America, because
they are faced with living-the-comparison
of both worlds. What
it that changes one's outlook on life once they have
traveled to Europe?
Phi Gamma Delta will have the chance again to ask four of its brothers
next fall term. Tom Radmilovich (71) will be returning from Holland after one
full year abroad. Bill (Cat Man) Leever (71) and Dave Denecke (71) will most
likely be deported from Italy after the completion of their year in Pavia, and
Robin Thomas (71) will return from Avignon, France next fall. Presently, our
European Force is strong and hopefully re-enforcements will be on the way next
year,
FIJIS IN SPORTS
FOOTBALL - O. S. U. Head Football Coach Dee Andros started spring
drills on April 7 by calling many grid hopefuls together for the first practice.
Among these prospects were Fijis Jerry McBurney (72) and Tom Rosendahl
(72). Jerry and Tom are making their respective comebacks from knee surg
eries due to last spring's practice. Jerry is playing wingback on the offensive
team while Tom is slated for Right Defensive Halfback. Both players are opti
mistic about seeing a great deal of action during the upcoming season this fall.
Spring practices came to a close on May 9 with the annual Picnic Bowl game.
Brother McBurney highlited the game with the reception of a 45 yard pass.
Brother Rosendahl, on defense, showed tremendous effort with 8 tackles and
11 assists. The Oregon State Football Team opens its 1970 season by hosting
the U. C. L. A. Bruins on September 12 in Parker Stadium, Corvallis . . . .
Come and see the brothers in action!
WRESTLING - This year Kappa Omicron had a great representation on
the Oregon State Wrestling Team. K. O. produced six wrestlers, four on
junior varsity, and two on the varsity team. On J. V. were Tim Hagen, John
Wisti, Ken Smalley and Darrell Cotton (all 71). However, because of knee
injuries Smalley and Cotton were unable to compete this year, while Wisti and
Hagen had a reputable season for the J. V. squad. Fijis on the Varsity team
were Bob Tomasovic (71) in Education and Dave Kalams (7 3) in Pharmacy.
Both brothers wrestled Varsity the entire year, making tours to the Rocky
Mountain schools and to Chicago for the N. C. A. A. Championships. Tomasovic
placed third in the Tournament, and fourth in the National A. A. U. Kalams
was beaten in his first match at the N. C. A. A. , and was unable to compete in
the A. A. U.'s because of a broken collar bone. Next year, all these fine Fijis
are returning to be Varsity Wrestling Squad hopefuls.
RUGBY - Oregon State Rugby Club saw four participants from Kappa
Omicron this season: Ken Dobberpuhl (71), Bruce Cordon (72), Jeff Martin
(72), and Greg Schuler (73). Ken secured a starting spot on the "A" Team,
but had to drop out of play because of schedule conflicts. Bruce, Jeff, and
Gregg all were starters for the "B" Team. Playing 8 games, the teams traveled
in Oregon, Washington, California and Canada. During Spring break, the teams
went to Monterrey, Calif, for a tournament and ended the season two weeks
later with a fourth place finish in the Portland tournament. This year the Rugby
Squad split the traditional Divine Cup with the University of Oregon.

INTERMURALS - Winter term was a big one for Kappa Omicron, as two
or our three entered basketball teams reached quarterfinal play in the AllSchool Basketball Tournament. Unfortunately, both teams lost in the quarters
after a couple of close, hard-fought games. Spring term again showed a Fiji
Baseball team in the quarterfinals and in golf, John Nevers (73) nabbed a second
place in the "A" Division School Championship,
MOTORCYCLING - Barrel Cotton (73) in Business Administration,
spends every weekend of the spring and summer racing motorcycles. In past
years. Barrel has been first in the Northwest of all Sportsmen Riders, and last
summer was second in the entire nation in T. T. racing. He has been champion
of tracks in Portland and Canby (Oregon), and last summer won the Nationals in
Castle Rock, Washington. This season. Barrel is riding a 650c. c. Triumph
and a 250c. c. Suzuki, again winning with many honors.
