1970 Spring Newsletter Theta (University of Alabama)
Spring is over, and our beloved Theta Chapter has come to the end
of its 116th year on campus. All of us here at the house are proud
of what we, while working with some of our graduate brothers, have
accomplished over the past two semesters. In this letter we would
like to give some of you other brothers an idea of what's been happening.
We'd like to start with some news about the "life blood" of the
fraternity, rush. Rush is off to a great start. We already have over
fifty boys on our rush list from twenty six cities and five states. We
not only had our annual "Fiji Island" rush party; but with the help of
Graduate Brother Knox Kershaw we had an extra rush trip in Montgomery.
Also our very active Mobile Graduate Ghapter made it possible for us to
spend a weekend with some boys down there.
The biggest asset to rush is graduate support...This year, as in
the past, we urge all graduate brothers to send the names of any young
men who are planning to attend the University and who you feel have the
potential to be good, hard working Fijis. Please send your recommen
dations in care of John Bostick, Red Bay, Alabama.

Straight from the desk of our sports chairman, we find that
the 1969-70 season proved to be quite competitive for Theta Chapter.
Pride in improvement over the past few years was the force behind
our athletic effort this year.
John Barelare and Ray Cox, who is a member of the University
golf team, captured the first place trophy for intramural golf. We also
placed first in the ping pong doubles. Theta finished second in basket
ball, swimming, SFVP football, and the ping pong singles. We took
third in volleyball, fourth in football, SFVP basketball and tennis.
These third and fourth places pushed Phi Gam into second in its bid
for the "All Sports" trophy. Our Second place was a mere fifteen
points behind the winner. This number is so minute when compared
to the 1000+ total points compiled by the top contenders.
\r\nSince only a few of Theta's top athletes graduated this year, we
will surely be a top contender for the All Sports Trophy again next year.
We all have hopes of capturing the trophy and proudly displaying it here in
the house, just as it has been displayed so many times before.
Our annual Norris Pig Dinner was held here at the chapter house
on April 7, 1970. Only a small number of graduate brothers were in
attendance due, in part, to an error in the mailing of the announcements.
However, those who were able to come found it the usual enjoyable time
of laughter, old tales, and those excellent bourbon and waters that brother
Dewey Jackson always mixes for the memorable event.
Things got under way around 4:00 in the afternoon with the cock
tail party which lasted until Dewey rang the dinner bell at 6:00. Dewey
again led the procession into the dining room singing those immortal
lines of "Bringing in the Pig". After the meal. Brother Tommy Tolleson
(Theta '65), who is at present one of the assistant coaches to Bear Bryant,
related an interesting message about the University's football team, and
about some possibilities for next year's season.
Following Tommy's speech, the 1970 pledge class was introduced.
Next the annual awards were given. Dr. Max McLaughlin of Mobile was
awarded the plaque for the most outstanding alumni of the year. Clement
M. Clapp was awarded the honor of best pledge, while Tommy Keene
received his much deserved reward of best active. Also, for the fiftyseventh consecutive year "Dew Drop" Jackson was unanimously voted
best butler.
After the awards were given, our President, Richard Teel adjourned
the group to Denny Stadium where the A-Day game was about to tegin.
We feel that we can really brag about our scholastic achievement
over the past year. Theta was number eight out of the twenty-seven frater
nities on campus in the scholastic average of the first semester of this past
school year. This shows great improvement over our eleventh position of
last year and the thirteenth position of year before last. Although the grades
have not been computed for the recent semester, we feel sure that our steady
progress was made again this semester toward achieving our goal of scholastic
leadership on campus.
We are very proud of brothers Richard Teel, Frank Anderson, Frank
Teel, and Weasel Thomas for making the Dean's list.

It is often said that Phi Gamma Delta is not for college days alone.
There is no better living example of this than our beloved and outstanding
graduate brother Alfred Rose. After the old house burned four years ago.
Brother Rose sacrificed much of his time in the effort to rebuild the first
chapter house on this campus. Mr. Rose, together with many other graduate
brothers of Theta, did rebuild our house in record time. Brother Rose is
still working. This spring he personally had shrubs and trees put around
the house and on the front lawn, making the best looking house campus even
better looking.

Although this letter has been rather sketchy of the past year,
we hope that it has given you some idea of what your fraternity is doing
now. We plan to send out a more formal message in the "Theta Fiji"
around the middle of next year. In this next issue we want to include
some news about what some of your old pledge brothers and friends are
doing with themselves. Please send any information you like to the
graduate relations chairman. Box 1252, University, Alabama 35486.
It will be greatly appreciated by us here at the house and even more so
by your fellow graduate brothers.
