MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE
As the Christmas season draws near, plans are
already underway for the annual Chapter
Christmas Open House December 1, 1973.
This year's festivities will include a buffet
dinner provided by the Mothers' Club and the
colorful Fiji chorus harmonizing to traditional
yule-tide songs. This will be followed by a dance
for all later in the evening.
All graduate brothers and parents are invited to
attend, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The evening will
provide an excellent opportunity for graduate
brothers to revisit the House and for parents to
make new acquaintances and see the House and
men of Phi Gamma Delta. See you there.
As most of you well know the last few years
have been dificult ones for many of the fraternities
and sororities of the University of Washington.
Throughout this time though, Sigma Tau has
continued to ride at the top feeling little if any of
the financial and rush pressure so prevalent
among many of the Greek houses. Now the
pendulum has begun to swing the other way; the
campus as a whole is turning more conservative,
rush is experiencing a marked increase, while
Sigma Tau is continuing its #1 tradition with the
(graduate financed) remodeling and repairs on the
physical plant this summer, and the always
friendly atmosphere where each individual can
continue to develop scholastically, athletically, and
personally, we are all proud to say, "I'm mighty
proud to be a Fiji."
In closing, I would like to remind all of you that
you are always welcome to drop in whether just to
look around or meet some of the new members of
the Class of'77.
SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarship at the ET chapter has remained
PIG DINNER
Are you going to the 1973 Pig Dinner? If not,
you don't know what you are missing. This year's
Pig Dinner promises to be something special. Bill
Zerman, Executive Secretary of Phi Gamma Delta
will be present.
Attendance from the Active Chapter has doubled
this year and most of the brother's are really
psyched for a good time. The dinner will be Nov.
9th at Horatio's, on Lake Union with cocktail hour
at 6:30 and dinner at 7:30.
consistently high for many years. The chapter was
recognized by the National Chapter as attaining,
for the 12th consecutive year, a grade point
average above the all-men's average. Important
factor which directed the young men at ET were
the implementation of study hours, the big brother
system, the willingness to work together exhibited
by the undergraduates, and naturally the high
character and ability these young Fiji's already
possess.
The all-house average last year was a 3.00.
So if you are wondering what's happening
around the House these days, you'll never have a
better chance to get to meet the guys or see some
of your old brothers than the 1973 Pig Dinnei'. See
Special recognition should be given to Ron Gibson,
a member of the freshman class of'76, who
through all 3 quarters obtained a perfect 4.0
record. He will be presented with a special award
you there!
for his efforts.
\r\nSUMMER HOUSE REPAIRS
PLEDGE CLASS OF '77
Although rush highlighted much of the activity

once again to recruit new Fiji's ... In the fall of
1973, Phi Gamma Delta completed rush with 34
outstanding new Fiji's, the class of 1977.
at Sigma Tau this summer, miuch time and effort
was spent to make additions and repairs to the
physical plant. The rear^ stairs, because of its
rickety'condition complicated the task of walking
a straight line for many, weekend, late-hour Fiji's;
but no more! In June we began remodeling the
stairs and the result was a sturdy, attractive stairs
and railing.
When it got to the point of either being strapped
into bed or sleeping on the floor we realized
something had to be done about the condition of
the bunks in the sleeping porches. Due to efforts
by graduate brother, Mr. Robert Watt, all of the
forty ailing bxinks were disassembled, welded,
braced, and reassembled.
Other repairs included new lighting fixture in
pool and recreation rooms, new wiring and
ventilation in the basement sleeping porch, and a
complete lock system throughout the house.
Summer live-in members, paint brush in hand,
managed to give four sleeping porches, five study
Jerry Wakefield ('74) and Gary Odegard ('75)
headed the summer rush campaign which owes
many thanks to the brothers who lived in the
house this summer as well as many others from
Seattle and those throughout the states of
Washington, Idaho and California.
Pat "Irish" Coles ('52) and John Duller ('69),
representing the alumni, provided a great
stimulus for the rush program. The all-house effort
produced a diversifed group of individuals. Among
this group are 7 Legacy's, 2 of which are third
generation.
Observing the class of'77 for half of their first
quarter, the Actives look forward to a great year
for 1973-74 and express confidence that Phi
Gamma Delta is indeed the number one house on
the University of Washington campus.
rooms, the Townees Room, Mail Room and
Telephone Room a new coat of paint. Professional
painters cleaned and painted the dining room.
Despite the fact that we overwhelmed the
opponents in last winter's snowball fight our
casualties were high. But during the course of the
summer all 256 broken windows were replaced. A
new lawn was also planted.
All undergraduate brothers wish to express their
appreciation for the financial support of the
graduate chapter, without which most of the above
improvements on the chapter house could not have
been possible. A special thanks to Mr. Robert
Watt,'35, and Mr. Chester Hill,'22, who spent
many hours planning, organizing and coordinating
the work effort.
