FOUNDING OF THE ETA GRADUATE CHAPTER
This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of
the Cleveland (Eta) Graduate Chapter. The founding was an
nounced in The Phi Gamma Delta journal, Volume 10, Number
2 (May 1888) in the following simple account:
William F. Fielder, Xi Deuteron; Ralph Fuller, Omicron
Deuteron; W.H. Mammon, Pi; F.H. Pritchard, Omicron
Deuteron.
"An alumni association at the home of Xi Deuteron will cer
tainly be a source of strength to the Fraternity, and great results
may be expected from it."
The Greek chapter names refer to the following institutions:
"The last addition to Phi Gamma Delta was Eta Graduate

XI DEUTERON CHAPTER IN 1888
What was happening at Xi Deuteron in 1888? The Phi Gamma
Delta journal. Volume 10, Number 2 (May 1888) which an
nounced the founding of the Cleveland (Eta) Graduate Chapter
also contained the following letter from Xi Deuteron Chapter:
"The past few months have been important ones for our col
lege, months in which has been accomplished the work of years.
"On the evening of January 24th Hiram C. Haydn was formally
inaugurated as President of our University and College at which
time he announced that the Trustees of the Universityhad deter
mined to permit no more ladies to enter our college, but rather
establish a separate institution equal in all respects to Adelbert for
them.
"We have the building provided, some of the Professors, and
are now looking about for a suitable lady to act as Dean for our
sister college, which shall open next fall. Asthe opinion has gone
forth that our Trustees are opposed to higher education of
women we make these few remarks to show that such is not the
case. The Conservatory of Music which has had an existence
here of some years, and whose Faculty are able teachers has
been incorporated in our University, and thus becomes the
muscial department of Western Reserve University. The School
of Design will also soon become a partof us, as our Art Depart
ment. A Gymnasium which will be an ornament to our campus,
is to be erected as soon as possible before Commencement. In
our next letter we will give a description of it. Sufficient in
ducements have been procured to maintain a Professor of
History and one of Biology, which chairs shall be filled next fall.
"So much for the college. Now for Chapter life. Our most im
portant event was the banquet we gaveto our alumni in this city
and vicinity. At9:30 sharp we all sat down to a fine spread at the
Hollanden and filled the 'inner man' with 'the fat of the land,'
after which songs and stories made the time pass rapidly.
"Major F.H. Braggins Pi '64 acted as a toast-master, and the
following were toasts:
'Our Fraternity'
'The Fraternit/
'Our Alumni'
'The Alumni
Chapter'
'Xi Deuteron'

'This school year began with one Phi Gamm at Adelbert. A
meeting of the fraternity was called to elect officers and appoint
committees, and the working of the Fresh, was immediately
begun. Eta Graduate chapter, whose men are examples of true
manhood, was enthusiastic in our behalf. We had great reason to
be hopeful. We struggled hard, but were doomed to defeat,
almost in the arms of victory. One-third of the Fresh are still
'barbs.'
"Bro. Wetmore, formerly of Theta Deuteron chapter, increas
ed our numbers one hundred per. cent, by coming to Adelbert to
graduate with '89.
"Xi Deuteron has had severe tests in its short history. Re
established only a few years ago, it has had to compete with five
other fraternities, which thinking that six mystic circles are too
many for the number of students, are endeavoring to kill Xi
Deuteron. But we shall not have it that way without strenuous ef
fort for an honorable existence. While there is lifethere is hope.
"In the class room and socially we are up to the standard. Bro.
Wetmore is a member of the Bicycle Club and also of his class
nine. The writer plays on the college nine, and is a member of the
Glee Club.

'This year has been an important one in the history of the col
lege. Our new gymnasium is a 'gym dandy.' Two new instructors
in biology and history supplya long-felt need. The Cleveland Col
lege for Women, opened last September, has the promise of a
bright future. It is a very successful substitute for co-education at
Adelbert. The efficient management of President Hayden is
bound to result in additional prosperity to Adelbert.

"Measures were taken towards the establishment of an Alumni

sister chapter at Cornell, which was instituted the same evening.
With these favoring prospects we hope to place our chapter on a

"Brother Wyant is one of the college correspondents to the city
papers, and Brother Adams has recently been elected President
of the LawnTennis Association. Xi Deuteron sends greeting to all,
especially the new and revived chapters.

Unfortunately, optimistic thinking and the new graduate
chapter were not, by themselves, sufficientto keep Xi Deuteron
prospering. Xi Deuteron's letter to The Phi Gamma Delta jour
nal, Volume 11, Number 2 (May 1889) revealed the following
sorry state of affairs:
GRADUATE GIFTS RECOGNIZED
We would like to recognize two brothers whose gifts arrived
since the last publication of the Potpourri. Emerison P. Roesch
'34 contributed to the Graduate Memorial Fund, which will be
placed toward the next special capital improvement project.
David E. Forbes-Watkins '61 made a donation to the Direc
tory/Potpourri Fund. Our appreciation goes out to these
brothers.

ALOHA GRADUATES!
Greetings from Xi Deuteron. With spring break over, the
semester is rounding the turn and heading for the home stretch.
But amidst all of the studying, many things are happening before
the school year closes. First of all, on April 30, 1988, we are
holding the 83rd Annual Frank Norris Pig Dinner, and more im-
prortantly, celebrating the IGOth Anniversary of the Eta Graduate
Chapter. I hope you have heard all about it and have made plans
to attend, but if not, contact the Chapter House and we'll give
you all of the details.
Another date to remember is May7,1988. We are planning the
first Fiji Island Reunion Picnic. Since we are having our Annual
Island Picnic that day anyhow, we decided to invite all of you,
our graduate brothers, back to the house for the occasion. More
information is coming soon, but we are trying to work out a reu
nion of several class years so that brothers can see the guys they
ate, slept, studied, and cavorted with.
Keep that date in mind!
EDITOR'S LETTER
As editor of the Potpourri this semester. I have had the good
fortune to experience one of the most important aspects of
brotherhood in Phi Gamma Delta: "Phi Gamma Delta is not for
college days alone." Though I am only a sophomore, the
graduate brothers I have come in contact with since my pledging
Xi Deuteron have been influential in my experiences as a Phi
Gam.
I feel indebted to numerous graduates who have fraternally
sacrificed their time in offering guidance and advice, sharing
memories and history, and challenging myself and the chapter as
a whole to become the best men possible.
I believe that as brothers, we can all point to occasions when
Perge'
graduate brothers have made an impact on our livesas PhiGams.
Fraternally,
Jon Schindler, '89
As an undergraduate, I am in personal contact with my brothers
and life as a Fiji every day. I know also that when I leave Xi
Deuteron, I will be able to actively continue my involvement as a
member of Phi Gamma Delta through the graduate chapters.
I view the 100th Anniversary of Cleveland's Eta Graduate
SCHOLARSHIP & PHILANTHROPY AT XI DEUTERON
Chapter as quite an accomplishment. A century of continued in
volvement by the Eta Graduate Chapter in Phi Gamma Delta is
Aside from our extensive involvement in campus activities, ex
cellent performance in intramurals, and numerous social events,
the Fiji spirit of dedication and hard work applies to our scholar
one evidence that the pledge we made to Phi Gamma Delta as an
undergraduate is a lifelong one, where fraternal friendships and
the quest for noble ideals will always make Phi Gamma Delta a
ship and service to the campus and local communities as well.
place we all can cherish.
Xi Deuteron's academic showing last fall semester was its best
in recent years, with the chapter attaining a cumulative GPA of

donated to local charities. All brothers have participated in
numerous philanthropic events, and this year we have raised
almost $6,000 in the following events: three telethons, the 13th
Annual Heart Run, and a Rent-a-Greek Auction where fraternity
and sorority members were sold to the highest bidder and the
proceeds donated to an area children's hospital.
Fiji's also have donated their time to CWRU in organizing
homecoming and working the chains for home football games.
As you can see, the Phi Gam influence is present among all
aspects of our campus, and we are striving to maintain Xi
Deuteron's position as the top fraternity on campus.
WITH SPECIAL THANKS
The brothers of Xi Deuteron would like to extend a special
thanks to brother Gary Krupkin, Xi Deuteron class of 1973, for
graciously donating the top prize for the raffle we held in con
junction with our Rent-A-Greek party. Brother Krupkin donated
all the profits from one of his oil wells to the raffle. Thanks to the
unusual nature off the top prize, we sold over 1,200 raffle tickets
around the campus. Thank you Gary.
Intramurals, at the Xi Deuteron Chapter, this year has been
among the many bright spots. After a strong second place finish
last year, we have been determined to bring the All-Sports
Trophy home. Early in the year, our track, cross-country and golf
teams each won first place. Our football team, led by Joe Mellott,
'89 and a stingy defense, picked up a third place, the highest
finish in recent Phi Gam memory. As the school year progressed,
it became quite clear that the IM race was between two teams,
the SAEs (BOO!!) and the Fijis (YEAH).
At the end of the fall semester, the Fijis continued to be domi
nant in all the IM events. We placed high in tennis, squash, racquetball and free throws. The basketball team, led by Dan
Vaughn '90, Matt Von Duhn '89, and inspired late-season play
by Pete Gingras '88, finished a close second. The hoopsters were
beaten by the Phi Taus in the championship game by a slim five
points. The wrestling team took a second place in the tourna
ment, as Joe Mellott pinned his way through his weight class.
As this article goes to the printer, we are currently holding
down second place in the All Sports Points race. And with two
major sports we are certainly prepared to win the All Sports
Trophy, and with the enthusiam showed this year, we hope to
keep the trophy in our house for a long time to come.
