Dear Brothers,
decline In the Greek system as well as at Alpha lota. Our rush program
Another fall Is rapidly coming to an end and we at Alpha lota are
facing another cold winter. Our thoughts are turning, however, to
spring and the beginning of rush and the Norrls Pig Dinner. We are
determined to see many new faces at the festivities and we have
reserved the largest banquet room available at the beautiful new
Gateway Center here In Ames. I know how difficult It Is for you with
family and career commitments to take a weekend off and travel many
miles to Ames, but If you get the opportunity, call up some of your
pledge brothers and plan to get together with them again at Iowa State.
There have been several graduate brothers stopping by the house this
fall. Duane Renkin ('55) stayed at the house when he was In town for the
Oklahoma football game. Earlier in the fall, Don Goodrlch ('60) was on
campus recruiting for General Motors Corporation and took a quick tour
of the house. This Is very gratifying to all of us In the undergraduate
chapter because we are all proud of our achievements during the past
few years and I suppose we like to show off a little bit. Remember
Brothers, this Is your house, too, and we owe our present existance to
your past support and depend on your support In the future.
I now would like to turn to a more serious note that I think that you
should all be aware of. Fraternity membership at Iowa State this fall was
down 13% over the previous fall. Our chapter was not among those,
Is presently one of the best on the campus but we must constantly strive
to Improve It. We need the support of everyone, graduate and
undergraduate. In order to avoid a decline In our chapter. I know that
many of you have sent fine young men our way In the past few years but
I hope that we can hear from even more of you In the months ahead so
we can be confident In getting members which will continue to move Phi
Gamma Delta ahead at Iowa State University.
Fraternally,

whose membership declined, fortunately, as we were able to actually
Increase slightly. I do not know If this decline will continue In the future
but I do know that by 1980, the enrollment at ISU will begin to decline.
This University decline will undoubtedly compound upon any future

Fall Rush '78 saw the Fljls In what has become an accuatomed position
after, a vigorous summer rush-number one Only needing five good
men to fill the house to capacity, we were able to shop until we found the
five we felt were Phi Gam material
We hope to continue this trakltlon in the future, and would welcome
any suggestions you might have regarding prospective Phi Gam
We would like to introduce to you 17 fine men, the 1979 Pledge Class.
They are, in the First Row[I to rj: Mike Shaw, Reading, Massachusetts;
Tim Ball, Spokane, Washington; Jim Denny, North Hampton,
Massashusetts; and Bruce Kielhorn, Fort Dodge, Iowa. Second Row:
Dan Wendl, Carroll, Iowa; Dick Dudley, Redfield, Iowa; Paul Sullivan,
Reading, Massachusetts; Karl Harms, Ottumwa, Iowa; Matt Condon,
Fort Dodge, ^ and Chris Wichman, Kearney, Nebraska. Third Row;
Pete Delanoit, Fort Dodge, Iowa; John Dohrmann, Davenport, lowa;
Kent Schmidt, Forest City, Iowa; Jim Spiers, Dubuque, Iowa; Bob
Pitsor, Fort Dodge, Iowa; Randy Kiefer, Bettendorf, Iowa; and Ken
material
Mersereau, Marshalltown, Iowa.
This year's pledge class could be described by all of the cliches and
worn out adjectives used to describe pledge classes, because they all
fit. However, this class of 17 speaks for Itself, and will continue to do so
In the future
At Alpha lota we have finally conquored the numbers problem for
hood and can finally divote all of our efforts to quality, something we did
this year, rather than worry whether or not we would fill the house at all

quarterly during Dead Week by the Little Sisters.
These Ladies have also kept the brothers stomachs happy in another
way while keeping their pocketbooks empty. The first week of the fall
quarter, the Little Sis's auctioned off homemade bakery items for
hungry brothers. The total amount raised was $236, with $40 going for
one pan of cinnamon rolls alone! Later in the quarter, the brothers got
their old blue jeans put back togehter during the sew and mend night.
Tentative plans are being made for a little sister program at the
chapter in Illinois Weslyan College in Bloomington, Illinois. The girls
Alpha lota hope to play an integral role in the formation of that
