This acadeinic year has been a very good one for Delta Deuteron.
Our strong rush effort gives us 21 pledges thusfar, and our total
membership now exceeds
The pledge class is progressing well through
the Purole Pilgrim and for a pledge project, they are going to give the
house"^^w~cofe~t.elevision. The freshmen who pledged in November will
be initiated within a month's time.

I would like at this time to thank Mr. Ben Baker for his excellent
performance as treaurer of our house corporation. Mr. Baker recently
resigned the position and brother Edwin Gadberry,'72, will take over
the position. I can not thank. Mr. Baker enough for all the time and eff
ort he has given Delta Deuteron. I look forward to working with Brother
Gadberry who is a lawyer in Richmond.
Two weeks ago I had the great honor of serving as president of the
ritual team for the installation of Phi Deuteron Chapter at the Univer
sity of Maryland. They are the 113th chapter. 1 was very impressed
with the brothers of Phi Deuteron and feel confident that they will be
come an outstanding addition to the fraternity system at Maryland.
I am indeed excited about Delta Deuteron's Norris Pig Dinner on April
l4 This will be the first one our chapter has ever had and we plan to
make it an annual event. We regret that we had to schedule it on Easter
weekend, but we had no choice. Please, graduate brothers, try to make
it if you can. We have an excellent speaker in Mr. Mighell— I had the
pleasure of meeting him at the Phi Deuteron installation. Come on! Breathe
Purple again and join us on the l^th.
Fraternally.

Delta Deuteron Hauls In 21 Pledges in Banner Year
Delta Deuteron has experienced its second consecutive strong rush
year, bringing in twenty-one fine pledges. Much of this year's success
can be attributed to the strong performance of Rush Chairman Dave Porterfield,'8l, and his assistant John Keesling,'8l. This pledge class is a
very diverse group, both geographically and academically. The brother
hood expects great things from this pledge class, and all indications
thus far point to the validity of their selections to be a member of The
Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta.
With the addition of these pledges, the size of the present brother
hood increases to
members. Along with the increase in size has come
a corresponding rise in reputation- not just on the Hampden-Sydney campus,
but among other area colleges as well. It's been a great year for Delta
Deuteron, but we know if we are to remain strong and solvent, performances
in rush like that of this year must become the rule rather than the ex
ception. With our present personnel, and the support of dedicated graduate
brothers, there is no reason that each year shouldn't be a banner year for
Delta Deuteron.
\r\nDELTA DEUTERON EIECTS NEW OFFICERS FOR 1979-80 ACADEMIC YEAR
President-Wesley Schuessler II,*81.
Treasurer-David H. Fletcher
Si.
Recording Secretary- E. Sidney Hunter III,'80.
Corresponding Secretary- Timothy M. Fitzpatrick,'8l.
Historian- David W. Holder,'80.
Delta Deuteron recently elected new officers for the upcoming year.
Four new members were selected, with the lone holdover from the last ad
ministration being corresponding secretary Tim Fitzpatrick, who will
serve his second term..Under the tutelage of the present officers, the
nev/ cabinet is expected to perform capably.
Our new president, Vies Schuessler '8l, is a native of Roanoke, Ala
bama and a member of the Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team. In addition to
his athletic endeavors, Wes is a member-in-good-standing of the college
community as a member of the Student Affairs Committee. Being the succ
essor to Craig Folio will be a challenge for Wes, but the brotherhood
trusts that he will respond favorably to the test.
Fittingly, Delta Deuteron's new treasurer^Dave Fletcher'8l, is an
Economics major. Fletcher, affectionately known as "Lumpy" hails from
St.Albans, West Virginia and is one of the fraternity,'s leading intra
mural athletes. He takes over a position which has been administrated
with great expertise by Will Willman for the past two years. Next to
the presidency, this is the most difficult of the cabinet positions, but
Dave is expected to fill this position v/ell.
Sid Hunter joins the cabinet after serving as Delta Deuteron's so
cial chairman this past year. A chemistry major with pre-med aspirations.
Hunter is from Virginia Beach, Virginia. Sid will be a very valuable el
ement in the coming administration because of his great knowledge of
fraternity management and ritual. Because of this experience, he v/ill
lend stability to a somewhat young cabinet.
The lone returnee from the present cabinet is corresponding secre
tary Tim Fitzpatrick '8l, from Wilmington, Delav/are. An English major,
Tim is an athletic trainer for the Tiger football and lacrosse squads.
His journalistic experience, resulting from work both for his high school
and college papers, as well as his hometown daily, he is expected to con
tinue his job well. Tim is assisted by his roommate John Keesling, and
they are the two primary sportswriters for the H-SC weekly paper," The
Tiger."
Dave Holder, is a junior Biology major from Sterling Park, Virgi
nia. Dave's contribution to the brotherhood, with his carpentry talents
and dedicated support, were instrumental in his receiving this cabinet
position. The brotherhood expects that he will upgrade Delta Deuteron's
scrapbooks by diligently snapping pictures and recording information
throughout the upcoming year.
The Purple Tiger Staff
Editor- Tim Fitzpatrick, Corresponding Secretary.
Writers- John Keesling and Steve Farthing

\r\nTeachers Praise Phi Gams************************
,
" They're a good, solid bunch of guys," said Dr. Robert Rogers,
professor of Bible and Religion, during an informal poll taken to dis
cover teacher's attitudes toward the brothers of Delta Deuteron Chap
ter. He further described the fraternity as " by far the best academ
ically and as participating members of the college community."
Citing
the Phi Gams*position as a leader of H-SC's social fraternities gradewise and their outstanding participation in college life, he had noth
ing but praise for the brothers.
Mr. Edward Crawford, Biology professor and chairman of the premedical committee, was also enthusiastic about Phi Gamma Delta;" They're
a fine bunch of boys. I've had many of them in my cpurses and they are
hard workers." Mr. Cr/wford went on to cite graduate brothers such as
Thomas Wall, now attending the Wake Forest School of Medicine, as an ex
ample of the type of student that the fraternity produces.
Lewis Drew, Dean of Students, had further praise for the hard-work
ing Phi Gams. According to him, the brothers are"concerned about being
constructive members of their fraternity. My impression is very positive."
All of the professors questioned
favorably in the poll, reflect
ing the brothers' good relationship with the Hampden-Sydney faculty. The
Phi Gams are furthering the tradition of excellence, having a combined
average of over 3-0 for the first semester of the '78'79 school year.
Perhaps Dr. Rogers summed up the faculty's feelings and gave us the high
est comipliment of all: " Some of my best friends are Phi Gam.s, and the
brothers are continuing their high standards at Hampden-Sydney."
Intramurals; Phi Gams Continue To Improve, Snap Lambda Chi Win Streak
After a somewhat disappointing fall season, the Fighting Purple
have staged a praiseworthy comeback and appear primed for a strong spring
showing. The Fiji roundballers, who started two sophomores and three
freshmen, finished the "A" league season with a credible 5-5 record and
a fifth place standing. The highlight of the season was a seven point,
63-56, victory over defending champion Lambda Chi Alpha; handing them
their first basketball loss in more than three years.
Among the stand
outs were John Keesling '8l ( 15.7 pts. per game ), Mike "Zeus" Schuma
cher ( 1^.4 ), and Lenny Mills '82, instrumental in executing Phi Gams
most dependable offensive weapon, the fast break. Freshman big men,
Shawn Dougherty and Steve Burns, added height to the line-up and contri
buted with steady rebounding. With all ten players returning next year,
coupled with the addition of two J.V. participants, we are definitely a
force to be reckoned with in the years to come. Currently, the Phi Gam
"B" team sports a 2-2 record, but still stands an excellent chance of
qualifying for the league playoffs.
Although the heavy snows have just melted at H-S, several Phi Gams
are busily preparing for the highly anticipated spring softball slate.
After a fifth place finish last year, the Phi Gams welcome back several
players who form the nucleus of this year's Fiji nine. Tim Fitzpatrick
'81 brings his steady glove and bat to anchor a young, but slick infield.
Flychasers John Keesling, David Fletcher'8l, "Zeus" Schumacher '8l and
Will Willman '79 will roam the garden for the Phi Gams and v/ill be count
ed on for their offensive production. ,Dan Laughlin '79 will again work
the mound after pitching well last" year. With several other sports re
maining, including table tennis, track and golf, we at Delta Deuteron
