Chapter President's Update
By Robert Huke '92
It's my pleasure to report that the 1991-92 school year is off
to a great start and that the undergraduates of Zeta Deuteron are
well on their way to having a very successful year.
Here at Washington and Lee. we begin rush during the first full
week of classes. The first impression that we give to the freshmen
is very important, and this year 1 think that we made a great first
impression. We began rush with a party at the house featuring the
band. Leggz. The band is a school favorite, so we had a packed
house, and 1 know the freshmen had a good time. More
importantly though, when open houses and rush dates began the
brothers had the best attitude that 1 had seen in my four years.
Everyone worked hard, and rush chairmen Pete Agrafiotis '94 and
Graham Taylor '93 served above and beyond the call of duty. All
told, we had 15 men accept of 23 bids given. The brothers feel that
the class of '95 has the potential to contribute a great deal to the
house, and we are carefully watching their development.
In other areas, the IM football team just completed another
fine season. Our main question going into this year was the line,
which was suspect due to the loss by graduation of the formidable
linemen trio of Craig Hatfield '91. Dan Bevil '91 and Chris Smith
'91. However, two surprising sophomores and an unheralded
senior carried on our long tradition of excellent line play. The
highlight of the season was our difficult 9-7 win over Law 11.
At the beginning of the year the Cabinet and I established
several goals for the house, and 1 think we are going to be
successful. Philanthropy has not been one of our strong suits in
the past, but the Zeta Deuteron brothers have committed
themselves to improving the community and ourselves through an
active social service program.
As this newsletter goes to press, our annual Heaven 'N' Hell
party is approaching. 11 looks as ifwe will be able to wear the "home
jerseys" for the first time in three years. The seniors are the only
brothers who remember Heaven 'N' Hell at the house, and

everyone else is looking foinvard to experiencing it.
We just finished a great Homecoming weekend and had many
graduate brothers stop by. 1 hope that all of you will consider
coming to visit us for the Norris Pig Dinner during Alumni
Weekend next spring. Remember, it is never too early to begin
planning. Throughout the year our door is always open to you. If
you are ever in the Lexington area, please stop by and see us
because we enjoy talking to those who love the Fiji.

Composites Sought to Replace
Those Lost in '84 Fire
The chapter is always looking for ^
more composites from years past. All
were destroyed in the 1984 fire. If
there are any brothers out there who would
like to donate an origineil (or an oversized copy), we
would be most appreciative. Along with awards,
composites are ideal decorations for the walls of the
chapter house. Please search your archives for us.
Homecoming Enjoyable Despite
Football Game Loss
October 10-12 marked Homecoming Weekend at
Washington and Lee, and not even another heart
breaking loss by the tough luck Generals football
squad could prevent us from having a good time.
The weekend kicked off with a concert Friday
night featuring the British bands Squeeze and The
Candyskins. Several graduates from the classes of
'90 and '91 were spotted in the audience.
On Saturday we traveled to the Wilson Field
parking lot for a tailgate extravaganza that may never
be equaled and took the sting out of the subsequent
loss by the Generals. Fiji's Greg Kiehl '92, John
Orndorff '92, Bill Barker '94, Reese Winpenny '94,
Steve Fugitte '92 and the rest of the football team gave
their all, however.
On Saturday evening we had a cocktail party at
the house, followed by a band party with our good
friends
the
Delts. The class of 1963 was well
represented, with Brothers Barton, Brandt and
Rideout showing us how it was done in the "old days."
All told, it was a successful if exhausting
weekend. We encourage all alumni to try to come to
Pig Dinner in the spring. It should be a night to
remember.

attended the Academy, which was held in Columbus,
Ohio. Bob said that in addition to meeting some good
guys from Baylor and SMU, the Academy provided a
good forum in which to discuss current problems and
to obtain new ideas. He is especially excited about
some new social service ideas provided by our
brothers at the University of Washington.
"Attending the Academy was a really worthwhile
experience," Bob said. "We were able to learn a lot and

in a strategic planning session. The goals that we set
there were put into place in September and are
already paying off."

The General Fiji
Up Close and Personal:
An Interview with Outgoing President Bill Yorio '92
Conducted by David Freed '92
DF: Let's start with an easy one. Tell us your major and your career goals.
Bill: I'm an economics major, and upon graduation I hope to join the Marine Corps and eventually
attend law school.
DF: What were the best and worst moments of your tenure?
Bill: The worst moment, without a doubt, was the fallout from our little altercation with the house
next door. The best moments are too numerous to name. We still know how to have fun, and eveiy
weekend seems to bring new episodes of hilarity and mayhem.
DF: Do youfeel that your position has helped your social and academic growth?
Bill: It's a lot of work, and 1would be lying if 1said it didn't take away from my studies. Keeping these
animals in line is a full-time job. But seriously, the position has helped me learn to deal with people
much better, and improved my contact with the administration, helping me obtain a position as an
RA. Besides, I'll never be able to give back all that 1 have taken from the Fiji.
DF; Any parting shotsfor the graduate brothers?
Bill: Only to stay involved and come back to visit. We love to speak with the old guard and hear their
war stories. When graduate brothers come back, it's always a good time.
DF; Do you have any advicefor the incoming president?
Bill: Good luck, you'll need it! No, not really. We have a good cabinet coming in next year, and
eveiything should run smoothly.
DF; Thanks, Bill.

Class of '94 Initiated in April
Last spring the mighty Fiji softball team came back from
a disappointing loss in the intramural league semi-final game
to win first place in the inaugural RA.RO/East Lex Fraternity
Softball Challenge Tournament.
The team, led by Ron Katz '91, the winningest coach in
Zeta Deuteron history, secured the title with a 15 to 8
shellacking of Phi Kappa Psi in the final game. "We played a
hell of a game," Katz said. "It's a good thing we came together
tonight. I had to yell for the first time after the loss to SAE and
nobody wanted to go through that again.
The Tournament Championship continued the winning
ways of Fiji intramural teams, coming after tough losses in
the finals ofvolleyball and basketball. Softball, said Katz, was

team. We just had to go out and play like it," Katz said. 'The
