The Summer Rush Chairs, Cary David ('92) and Pete

young potential Phi Gams. Over 6000 men every year
apply to Iowa State. Roughly 2500 actually end up at

of work goes into signing the 17 young men we have this
fall.

Greetings Graduate Brothers. It was a scorcher here
this Summer, hut at least it quit raining. I guess Brother
Gordon Smith ('61) can postpone building that Ark he
talked of(and leading us undergraduates in two by two!)
Speaking of Brother Smith, what a tremendous asset
he is to Alpha lota. Without his and Brother Lynn
Schroeder's ('76) contributions, this Chapter would not be
half the Chapter we have become.
I arrived at the House this summer to find that
Brother Smith and Chapter President Eric Kvam ('91)
had just finished installing a brand new ceiling in the
dining room and kitchen. This is the first time that the
ceiling tiles have been replaced in nine years. They have
also cleaned both rooms top to bottom and scoured the ap
pliances. Brother Smith has also started work on replac
ing the floor in the Paddle (Pool) Room. Once this is fin
ished it will go along great with the painting done this
past Spring. Along the lines of painting, Brother Smith
has also continued his quest to repaint all of the rooms in
Through Brother Pyle's years here at Alpha Iota, he
was one of the "infamous" waiters. Recording Secretary,
took pictures for house parties throughout the Greek sys
tem, which is who he earned the name,"Photo Joe."
Brother Pyle graduated in March '69 with a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Engineering Operations. With the de
sire to fly, and the likelihood of being drafted. Brother
Pyie inlisted in the United States Air Force. In 1974, he
recieved an honorable discharge. The following Spring
he entered the family business, jyie fJiato. He resides
here in Ames with his wife, two daughters and stepson.
From '80 to '83, Brother Pyle was on our Board of Chapter
Advisors. In addition, he is a helicopter pilot for the
Iowa Army National Guard since the Fall of '88. When
asked about his overall attitude toward the chapter.
Brother Pyle stated,"In my personal development, the
five years in the fraternity created the desire to graduate
and get a degree. Ultimately, the Alpha Iota Chapter,
gave and still gives, an atmosphere which makes a per
son change, grow, and contribute to society."

Brother Schroeder has been working diligently on the
"great outdoors" around the House. The purple clemantis
is in full bloom and really adds color to the brick exterior.
He has also planted a dozen new shrubs and added more
If any of you are in town, please stop by the House. The
big Homecoming game versus Oklahoma State,is October
26. Please plan to be in attendance. Our lawm display
plans to be incredible and the Cyclones have a good shot
grass seed to thin areas; which have taken off with all of
this moisture. He has also managed to keep ahead of the
weeds in all of the newly created shrub and flower beds.
The Mother's Qub has donated a brand new composite
case. It is complete with a plexiglass front, wood exteri
or, and a light to illuminate the inside. They have also
donated half of the money used to purchase our new Mac
intosh computer and printer. They have established a
long term goal of furnishing a study room.
The work just continues around here. It is beginning to
look like University Avenue around Iowa State Fair
time. Projects for work week included exterior painting
enlarging the volleyball pit, replacing bench planks in
ing very hard lately, but he has begun to worry us. Just re
cently he was telling your Editor to relate to him as "You
would to your own Grandfather". I wonder if Brother
Smith realizes that he is one year younger than my Fa
ther? Alas, I guess that is what age and senility does to a
the Pit, setting up the study room, general maintenance,
more painting and building a dome over the parking lot.
The end result will be very rewarding as the general up
keep and maintenance of the House continues to improve
Fraternally,
at wanning the game this year.
Also, on a sadder note. Brother Smith has been work
man!

Dear FIJI Grad:
Greetings Graduate. This is your second and final letter about the
Homecoming Activities on October gOth. So far, it looks to be a real
fun week-end.
As mentioned in the last letter, Oklahoma State will be this year's
Homecoming opponent. During the morning we will be hosting the 2nd
Annual Graduate Brothers' Homecoming Buffet. This year we will be
honoring the Classes of '61 & '76 for their 30th & 15th anniversaries.
There will be plenty of food for you and your family, so bring them
with you and show them where you lived during your college years and
share some of those great memories with them.
After the Cowboys are humiliated by the Cyclones, it will be time for
a little friendly competition of Graduates Vs. Undergraduates in a flag
football game.
In order to obtain group seating for the Homecoming Football Game, we
will need you to forward the below form with a check for $18.00, per

you can be seated with your family and college buddies.
There will also be an evening cookout at the FIJI House, followed by an
afterhours party. The buffet and cookout are free to all FIJI Graduates
and their immediate family. Please join us and tour the FIJI House for
