The Beta Chapter at Lehigh University' is alive and well. What's
so good about that you ask.> Plenty. Fraternities throughout the
country are under extreme pressure from the nationals, universi
ties and their alumni. I believe this is due to the declining
interest in joining fraternities (about 300 this year at Lehigh and
29 fraternities seeking pledges) as well as very poor behavior by

We all realize there are two sides to fraternity life, the fraternal
and the business side. One hand washes the other and both our
hands are doing well. However, we all realize, alumni and
undergraduates alike, that our first priority is getting the best
grades possible. Scholarship comes first. Our record over the
past ten semesters has significantly improved over the previous
years. During these last ten semesters, we have consistently been
ranked in the top ten among fraternities at Lehigh.
We are active and successful rushers, getting pledge classes
that keep our membership at or above home capacity. We
obtain good reports from our national headquarters. We hold
regular chapter meetings and have a committee system that
enables us to be well represented in social activities, campus life,
intramural and charitable events. We have a well defined pledge
program, an active house manager and steward. Our cabinet is
comprised of seniors and juniors who, I believe, are ail excellent
*Notc: This year cocktails are being served at the chapter house, not at
Rathbone Hall as in previous years. Transportation will be provided from
the house to Rathbone and back after dinner.
Atother year has gone by and another Pig Dinner is planned.
Like they have all been over the past years, it is an opportunity'
to see old friends and meet new ones. As always, we will do our
best to see that everything is ready to insure our returning
alumni and friends have a most enjoyable evening.
So call a brother, bring your wife or friend, get a group
together and return to Lehigh for an evening with fellow Fijis,
past and present. See page 4 for this year's Gold and Silver Owl
Award reeepients.

Our house membership presently exceeds capacity. This

funded while maintaining competitive house changes. All our
members sign room and board contracts, which your alumni
association insisted upon a few years ago. This assures financial
stability. Financial problems are creating significant problems
among several fraternities on the hill and I predict that some
will not survive. We are taking whatever steps necessaiy to keep
our chapter among those that remain.

that we have established a
memorial scholarship fund in
his name. In an effort to
preserve his memory within
the Hut, the E. Tyler Morris '98 Memorial Scholarship Fund
has been set up so that each year, a brother in Fiji will be its
recipient.
The Lehigh Development Office has been working closely
with the brothers of Fiji regarding the Fund. According to the
Development Office, we must first achieve a 510,000 minimum
balance before the Fund can be restricted to a Phi Gam. We are
requesting eveiyone's support in achieving our ultimate goal.
Many of you have already received a letter regarding this
issue. We strongly encourage all of your participation in this
effort because it will immortalize Tyler Morris' inemoiy and
strengthen Fiji's future in the vears to come. If any of you have
any questions or comments about the E. Tyler Morris '98
Memorial Scholarship Fund, please do not hesitate to contact
David Chcrkas '98, 610-882-4008 or Andrew Braham '98,

The appearance of a fraternity house is most important to
prospective rushers, alumni, as well as a source of pride to the
undergraduates. The last time our house was redecorated took
place in 1976. Our house badly needs an update and we have
begun the redecorating along with some necessart' repairs.
Since last summer the wooden doors on the study rooms have
been replaced with decorator style steel fire doors and jams. The
second- and third-floor halhvays have been painted and new
carpet installed along with new light fixtures. The third-floor
shower has been retiled. The second-floor shower has been
rcgroLited, the toilets reset and the partitions repaired. The
shower ceiling has been replaced and painted. The wash area in
the kitchen has been painted and best of all (from an appearance
and frustration point of view) the libraiy ceiling has been
replaced.
The undergrads recently painted the dining room and it looks
great. It made me feel that our undergraduates really care about
the appearance of our house and are willing to do something
about it.
The libraiy ceiling and the leak from the second-floor shower
has been a problem for more than 25 years and hopefully it has
been solved. I recall when Mike Daniczek '73 reportedly
studying in the library had the ceiling come crashing down on
him. No injuries were reported and Mike surt'ived the scare hut
the problem remained for vears.
The carpet in the living room, sun porch and librart' have
been replaced with a beautiful plaid that looks super. Also we
had the tile at the fireplace replaced and the area enlarged.
Another freezer has been purchased and we were able to find a
wood crafter who made a dining room table that exactly
matches the other three oak tables. The dining room looks
much better.
Still to come are new dining room chairs and leather furniture
for the living room and sun porch. Wc intend on reusing the
old tables after retinishing them. We hope that the furniture will
arrive before Pig Dinner, May 2. That itself should be another
reason to return to our alumni reunion dinner.
You ask how are we paying for this and will our undergradu
ates take the proper care of such an expenditure. Your alumni
association has been planning this renovation for several years
and through careful planning and a favorable economy, the
funds to pay for all of the abo\ e are available. And, after
meeting several times with the undergrads and the house
officers, 1 ha\ e received their commitment to properly care for
the newly furnished areas as well as the entire house.
So, all in all, I like our house and the men in it. We're not
