Spring Intramurals
Spring semester intramurals have begun and the Phi Gams are anticipating a
good season. We are cuiTently in the middle of 5-on-5 basketball and quick-ball.
Although basketball has not had a great season, the quick-ball team is undefeated
and with playoffs just around the comer, they are a definite contender to win it
all.

PHI GAMMA DELTA 8t COLLEGE ATHLETICS
At the U ofI, varsity athletes are usually not encouraged to join the Greek system due to the time commit
ments of a house, along with the commitments of being a varsity athlete. Four members of Phi Gamma
Delta have proven that with the right amount of dedication and perseverance one can be successful as a var
sity athlete while being involved within the Greek system.
This fall, while playing in a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for intramurals, I was offered the chance to be a
member of the U of I's basketball team as a walk-on. I joined the team, not really knowing where it would
lead. Playing time for me was minimal, but the experience of varsity athletics at a Division 1 level was in
comparable. Not only did I get the chance to test my own physical abilities day in and day out, but I was
also faced with the challenge to keep my promises to academics, friends, and ofcourse 600 U.
Other varsity athletes from Mu Iota include Brian Davi ('04), Tyrel Stevenson ('02), and Nick Smith
('02), all whom are members ofthe U of I Men's Track Team. Last year Tyrel and Nick helped the team to
become Big West Conference Champions. Brian Davi, a freshmen in the house is one of the team's new
pole-vaulters.
Dedication, commitment, perseverance - these are all characteristics of the four young men that have suc
ceeded in college athletics, as well as being active members of Phi Gamma Delta. Excelling in the class
room, along with participating in college athletics is not something that comes easy. The fact that we have
four young men that have done just that exemplifies what it means to be a Fiji. I believe that the athletic
and Greek communities are all taking notice to what we have accomplished as individuals and as a house.
