W. Lunsford Crew ’38 (P.O. Box 160,
Roanoke Springs, NC 27870) I enjoyed
my 84th birthday on October 29 and am
still practicing law. I treasure membership at the Chapter from 1934 to 1938.
It is my recollection that 15 members of
our pledge class of 16 graduated in
1938. My two older brothers, Ellis and
Winfield Crew, enjoyed our membership in the fraternity. I am delighted to
know that the DKE, SAE and Sigma
Mu still identify their location as next to
the Phi Gam house.
Paul V. Severin ’41 (702 Maple St.,
Ashland, VA 23005-2130) I would
like to see all of my brothers!
E. Ramsey Hardin Jr. ’42 (101 W.
Baptist St., Marion, SC 29571;
f4u41945@earthlink.net) I would like
to hear from Bill Elmore ’43, Charlie
Hussey ’42, Tom Ramsey ’40, Walt
Parsley ’42 and Johnson Harris ’40
Clarence L. Ruffin ’42 (2233 Vereen
Cir., Little River, SC 29566-9106;
ruff3@juno.com) I remarried Lucille
Walter 2+ years ago. Address is the
same. No new things in my life. I am
getting older but I’m still enjoying
life. They say I’m in the golden years,
but I haven’t seen any gold yet.
Would like e-mail from class of ’42.
Theodore E. Haigler Jr. ’46 (815-5
Marlowe Rd., Raleigh, NC 276097048) Peggy and I were presented
with our 16th grandchild, a boy, on
Christmas Eve, December 24, 2001.
We had 33 family members for
Christmas dinner, with six unable to
attend. Had a great time at the reunion
with Duane Green and others in
Greenville, N.C., last year and hope as
many of the classes of ’40s and ’50s,

N
ow you can find your Phi Gam buddies in seconds with a new online member
directory! You’ll be able to send e-mail, read news and see pictures your brothers
have posted to the Graduate Updates page and Photo Gallery. On our Bulletin Board,
you can post your own messages, view messages of other brothers and arrange to meet

may be attending.
Our new Web site is crucial to keeping us all connected.
It’s so important that we have taken a leap of faith by having
it built. We hope you will support this brotherhood
reconnection tool. It costs much less than a printed directory, and stays current as we update our information online.
You can also read about upcoming Phi Gam events and
see photos of past events, get news and info, see your name
on the honor roll of contributors, save time by
making your contribution online through our
secure credit card service (Remember, you’re

find “lost” brothers, get the latest on the house and the chapter
and recapture some of the Phi Gam spirit!
Reconnecting with your brothers is more than just nostalgia. It’s an opportunity
to rekindle friendships, plan a small reunion, spark business alliances and be an active
part of an organization that’s really making a difference in the lives of young men. We’re
still honing the site, and your feedback and input are essential. Your brothers are eager to
hear how you’re doing!

150 Gather for Annual Norris Pig Dinner!
P
hi Gamma Delta’s saying “not for college
days alone” rang true at the March 22,
2002, annual Norris Pig dinner celebrating
151 years of Epsilon Chapter and the lifelong
experience of the fraternity. This year’s event
was held at the Angus Barn in Raleigh.
“The Norris Pig Dinner is a great
tradition. It brings brothers together and
reminds us that fraternity is not for college

days alone,” said Master of Ceremonies
Ted Griffin ’71. “We had about 150
people turn out and we really enjoyed
renewing friendships and sharing great
stories. “Pop” Cashion was a wonderful
speaker.”

as can, will come in 2002. Looking
forward to seeing everyone at Pig Dinner.
Milton B. Cash Jr. ’48 (4530 Corran
Ferry Loop, Austin, TX 78749-1117;
mcashjr@aol.com) Haven’t gotten back
to NC for past 2 + years. Moved to
Austin, TX, last year to be with some of
family. Brother Tom Lathrop ’47 spent
four days in May with us, as he did in
2000, en route from California to Florida
to visit brother. We had a great time
talking about Phi Gam days and all the
brothers. Would love to hear from
brothers from 1940-1950 so maybe we
could contact and renew our friendships.
John C. Devore ’49 (9222 Annhurst St.,
Fairfax, VA 22031-1902) Have been on
several cruises to the Caribbean and New
England; the last cruise out of New York
only three days before the WTC attack.
Fond memory…during my pledge era, an
egg fight on Franklin Street! We (pledges)
had to clean several cars afterward.
Carl N. Mathis Jr. ’49 (314 Colonial Dr.,
Wilmington, NC 28403-1208;
jofomathis@aol.com) A group of Phi Gams
met for luncheon at the Cape Fear Club in
Wilmington on December 31, 2001. Those
attending were: Tuney Nunnelee ’49,
Chick Mathis ’49, Brad Tillery ’48, Tolly
Hughes ’50, Howard Penton ’53, Bill
Quarles ’52, Ben Yelverton ’51, Harold
Jeter ’50, and Bill Creech ’49. Some
choice stories were exchanged, and a great
time was had by all.
R. Bryant Hare III ’53 (4325 Gorman
Dr., Lynchburg, VA 24503-1903)
Always happy to hear from my fraternity brothers!
Andrew H. Patterson ’54 (14
Birchbrook Rd., Bronxville, NY 107082016) Nothing really new. Still working
full time but with much more time to
enjoy the Adirondacks and grandchildren.
Donald A. Furtado ’59 (32 Murray Blvd.,
Charleston, SC 29401) My brother, Bob, and
fellow ’59 Phi Gam graduate, made his
second retirement in December. The first
was from the Marine Corps in 1983. The
second was from Compaq. He is now living
in Chapel Hill and enjoying being lazy. I’m
still “lawyering” with two of my three sons
Page 2
still in college. The youngest is a
freshman at Duke, but I’m living with it!
Wayne B. Venters ’60 (6809 S.
Prairie View Ln., Spokane, WA
99223) Linda and I moved from
Hampstead, NC, to Spokane, WA, in
January, 2001. The snow is still on the
ground! I never appreciated warm humid
days until moving out here. Not all bad,
however; good skiing, fishing and
mountain views.
Robert T. Wright ’68 (11095 S.W. 84th
Ct., Miami, FL 33156; rtwjr1@aol.com) I
have opened up my own law firm in
Coconut Grove, Florida, with an old
friend, Kendall Caffey. We have seven
lawyers and are a litigation “boutique.”
R. Stevens Gravely ’74 (462 Holly Glen
Rd., Pittsboro, NC 27312-6581; rsteveg@
earthlink.net) Classes of 70-77…send an email or stop by for some country hospitality
if you get to Chapel Hill.
Charles W. Holderness ’74 (2004 Dalton
Rd., Greensboro, NC 27408-5826;
chuck@digibyte.com) My son, Charles W.
Holderness Jr., pledged Phi Gam at the
University of Georgia. For his initiation,
they invited any dads or older brothers who
were Phi Gams to attend the initiation
ceremony. I went and thought that this was
a really special occasion. I would encourage
Epsilon to do the same thing. Pinning my
badge on my son was truly special.
Monty R. Pollard ’77 (14932 Jockey’s
Ridge Dr., Charlotte, NC 28277; montyrp@
aol.com) Things are happening with the
Pollards. At the time of this writing, we are
in the process of moving from Kansas City
to Charlotte – hot damn! Our oldest, Kesler,
is a pledge this fall at Gamma Tau Chapter at
Georgia Tech. He is President of his pledge
class! Another Phi Gam in the family! Mary
Kirkland, our daughter, is a freshman in high
school and continues to swim competitively.
Her chances of going to Carolina have
increased 100 fold by our move back to N.C.
Greetings to the secret seven!
Edward V. Hickman ’79 (5104 White
Oak Dr., Lumberton, NC 28358;
evhickman@aol.com) Remarried on
November 4, 2000, and have a new baby
girl, Lennon Nicohl, born April 30, 2002.
Brannon L. Gilliam ’89 (532 W.
Parkway Ave., High Point, NC 27262;
bgilliam@triad.com) My wife, Jill, and I
celebrated the birth of our third child,
www.epsilonpgd.com
Angie Kathleen Gilliam, on November 9,
2001. We’re now playing a zone defense.
David S. Divine ’90 (116 Lake Boone
Trail, Raleigh, NC 27608; daviddivine@
yorkproperties.com) I married Kelly
Melvin on March 2, 2002, and enjoyed a
honeymoon in Europe. I started a new
company in November 2001 named
D&M Building and Renovation, specializing in building custom homes in the
Raleigh area. Still a real estate agent for
York Properiteis as well.
Richard B. Homes ’90 (104 Queen St.,
Charleston, SC 29401; rhomes@
mindspring.com) Congrats to Alston
Tankard ’92 on his first newborn baby,
14lbs, 6ozs. Biggon just like his daddy.
Also congrats to Dave Batten ’80 for his
inspiration on marriage after 40. Also,
John Gates ’80…I love you brother
(you’ll always be my brother). I welcome
all brothers traveling to Charleston, S.C.,
to my house for a “B.T. Cocktail.”
Christopher H. Hunter ’91 (2015

Dail and I ran into a dozen or so Phi Gam

hmcnc.com) My wife, Michelle, and I

\r\nGraduate Feature: Ben Snyder ’43
B
en Snyder ’43 is an author, a teacher,
and a veteran. Recently, he sent two
1942 issues of The Epsilon Owl to Phi
Gamma Delta. He said, “I found the
papers in my files and thought I should
share them with the fraternity. It’s a
symbolic gesture to help re-build the
archives.”
Ben’s college story starts as World War
II was beginning. “It was a very special
time,” Ben said. “One by one, we were
summoned away to service. We had to
keep filling in for each other.” Ben filled
in as editor of Yackety Yack, the UNC
yearbook when his friend Hugh Morton
left for the military. Then Ben was called
to serve. He was a B-24 Bombardier in
the Air Force and did a combat tour in the
Two issues of The
’Owl, dated 1942.
South Pacific. When he returned from the
service, Ben finished his formal education at Harvard University earning a
graduate degree in History.
He settled in Michigan and worked at the
Cranbrook Educational Community
which includes a school, a graduate
academy of the arts and an institute of
science. Ben was a school teacher, coach
and dorm manager.
As varsity track coach, Ben took many of
his track teams to UNC in Chapel Hill
during Spring Break. “We stayed
wherever we could, sometimes the field
house, sometimes the University Motel.
Our early training gave us a head-start on
the season when we returned north.”
After getting their first glimpse of UNC
this way, several of his track stars
returned to Chapel Hill to be part of the
UNC track team. David Frey
’64, ’67, a current
UNC Trustee is one of
those people. David
made his first visit to
Chapel Hill in 1958
with Ben when his
Cranbrook School track
team came for Spring
Training. He returned as
a full-time college
student.
With Ben’s help,
Cranbrook School is one of
the prestigious few who are
included in the field of UNC
Morehead Scholars.
Ben misses teaching. He spends much of
his time divided between church, community work, tennis, stamp collecting and
writing. In 1997, Ben, with help from his
wife, wrote “Once More with Joy: A
Perspective of Cranbrook School for
Boys.” He is married, going on 46 years,
and has three kids and four grandchildren. Their family is spread across the
country and they plan on traveling often
to see them.
Ben has fond memories of college days at
UNC. One of the lessons he has learned
though is that fraternity life in the ’40s
was not as diverse as it could have been.
“We were quite exclusionary. Over the
years, I have learned the importance of
diversity and have devoted time and
effort into helping establish inter-city
kids programs.”
Although he has lost touch with his
fraternity brothers, he still has many good
memories. Brothers may contact Ben as
1207 Timberview, Bloomfield Hills,
Michigan 48304, or at 248-853-6579.
This story with Ben Snyder ’43 is part of
an ongoing series designed to help us get
to know our brothers better. If you know
a brother you think would make a good
profile subject, please send his name and
graduation year, along with your name
and grad year to our graduate relations
service: news@2stayconnected.com.
Make sure to mention that it’s for Phi
Gamma Delta, University of North
Carolina.
150 Gather for Annual Norris Pig Dinner (continued from page 1)
history with stories about several graduates including current
North Carolina governor Mike Easley ’72. In what was similar
to an Exile’s Speech since Mike was unable to attend, “Pop” did
a fine job of telling stories about Mike and his life as a Phi Gam.
Easley isn’t the only state link to Phi Gamma Delta. A founding
member of Epsilon chapter, Zebulon Vance (1854) also served
as governor three times between 1862 and 1879.
Archon Secretary Marvin Carver ’75 described Jerome. “Some
people know ‘Pop’ as the ‘purple godfather.’ ” He was a UNC
faculty member for many years and former head of the NC Office
of Archives and History. “Pop” loves teaching so much that he
recently returned to teaching – this time at North Carolina State
The Epsilon Owl
University. For a while we held him in contempt for going ‘red,’ ”
said Marvin. However, all is well now that a brand-new Phi
Gamma Delta chapter was established at NC State this year.
The first Pig Dinner was held in 1893. Frank Norris, a Phi
Gam at the University of California – Berkeley organized the
event. It turned out to be such a success that now every year,
every Phi Gamma Delta chapter holds a Norris Pig Dinner. In
addition to the stories and camaraderie, awards and recognitions
were announced including Sires and Sons.
Marvin did a great job in summing up the event. “It’s
wonderful men joining together to celebrate our great
fraternity and each other. What could be better than that?”
