Back on Top
The fall semester for Phi Gamma Delta
proved highly successful in an array of areas,
but academics stands out.
Despite the
distractions of game days, girls, and band
parties, the Kappa Deuteron brothers stayed
focused on their studies and regained the
number one spot on grades with a 3.20 GPA.
Our pledges excelled as well as they placed first
with a 3.19 GPA. Purple Legionnaire Dr. Jere
Morehead noted that the chapter's long history
of academic success is directly related to rush
and our pledge program:"As long as we make
academic success a criteria for membership
and continue to stress its importance in pledge
education, we can remain number one for the
forseeable future."
The brothers have the
same academic goal for the spring and will
settle for no less than first place.
\r\nA Brother Remembered
This past November, the
Kappa Deuteron Chapter and
the Fraternity of Phi Gamma
Delta lost a shining star as
Brother Ross Stillwell's long
battle with cancer was lost.
He passed away at the young
age of 34. As every brother
knows, Brother Stillwell's
accomplishments in his
shortened life were
extraordinary.
Brother Stillwell attained
the distinction of Eagle Scout
before coming to the
University of Georgia and
worked at the celebrated
Philmont Scout Ranch in New
Mexico during the summers
while a student at UGA. He
earned his Bachelor of Arts
degree in Microbiology from
the University of Georgia
(Magna Cum Laude) in 1989.
As a Kappa Deuteron
Stillwell also was awarded the
Ronald M. Hudson award by
the Kappa Deuteron Chapter
as the brother who best
exemplified the high ideals of
Phi Gamma Delta.
Brother Stillwell went to
graduate school at Harvard
University and earned a Ph.D.
in Immunology. He joined
the National Institute of
Health and continued to work
despite his illness and
numerous treatments.
Many undergraduate and
graduate brothers attended
Brother Stillwell's funeral.
Although his
accomplishments were very
impressive, the qualities most
remembered by his friends
and family centered around
his humanity, caring nature,
and love of life. Many
brothers spoke of his gentle

Graduate Brothers,
"You will never regret being a
Fiji at the University of Georgia,
for as long as you live." Sammy
Smith's words seem to have a
greater connotation as I, along
with the other seniors, enter our
last semester here at Kappa Deuteron. This is reinforced by the
fact that I believe the chapter is in
excellent condition. This year has
given new meaning to the saying,
mighty proud to be a Fiji.
Finally, 1 would Just like to con

the men that compose her. Mem

The 34"" annual Pig Dinner will
take place on April 20,2002. I
feel that this year's gathering
holds a greater meaning than in
the past. Although the events of

Dear Brothers,
What a great time to be a Fiji. With so many successful
graduate brothers making their impression on the world,
and our undergraduate chapter striving for excellence in
all areas of campus life, I can hold my head high as a
Fiji. I can assure that our chapter will continue to pros
per and "press on" for years to come. I look forward to
seeing you all at Pig Dinner and trading stories about
the great times spent here at Kappa Deuteron.
