UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA
PIG
DINNER
By Matt Fredrick '63
Last May Kappa Deuteron held the 12th annual
Norris Pig Dinner at the Georgia Center for Contin
uing Education.
Dr. James Anderson (Kansas '62) headed the
ceremonies as Symposiarch. The Invocation was
given, and the Feast of the Pig began.
All joined together in singing "Bringing in The
Pig." Bill Gaithings of Alabama was the eldest
Brother on hand and kissed the pig's snout. Theta
Deuteron Lou Becton had been the youngest
pledge. With great zeal and ardor, he bit off the
Pig's tail. The Doxology was sung and the meal
began.
After dinner Warren Ragsdale reviewed the
events of another banner year for Kappa Deuteron.

Tom did an excellent job as head of the House

Phi Gamma Delta, this being former Chapter Presi

Scholarship award. Brett had the highest cumula

Pledge of the Year came up. Jimmy Adams, a busi
ness major from Gainesville, was named Best
Pledge due to his hard work and diligence during
the pledge period.

The Kappa Deuteron chapter has again shown its
dedication to its principles of accomplishment and
enjoyment during the college years.
At the conclusion of the 1979-80 school year,
the undergraduate brothers again placed first in
Governor's League athletics and first in schola®:ship. To date we have won the atletic trophy four
of five years and the scholarship trophy nine con
secutive years.
Last March the Theta Deuteron pledge class was
large number of early and Charter members of the
Chapter. This is an indication of the intense broth
erhood existing at Kappa Deuteron, that people
separated by more than a decade, hundreds of
miles, and the happenings and changes that accom
pany the road of life, would come together and re
new the old bonds. Pig Dinner may be entertain
ment and fun, but ±is renewing of the Fraternal
bonds and oaths is the Dinner's underlying pur
pose, for this is the cohesive force that holds Phi

taken into the fold. This group has demonstrated a
great concern for the Fraternity as evidenced by
their hard work in improving the beauth of both
the house and apartments. Many of these brothers
took it upon themselves to build loft-style sleeping
accommodations, which provides more living space
in their apartments. Next time you are over at the
house, stop by room 6-A and take a look.
In May we initiated the Iota Deuterons at Dr.
Anderson's. It was a great experience for everyone
involved. The Iota class consists of some of the
most friendly and down to earth people in the
Fraternity. They have all worked hard to uphold
our values and to exhibit the pride which all Kappa
Deuteron Fijis should have.
So far the 1980 Fall rush has been one of the
most productive ever. The new young men who
have been selected to pledge our Fraternity are all
outstanding in their respective fields of endeavor,
and we feel certain that they will help build upon

Ralph Hathom, a loyal Fiji, took occasion to rap
the Dekes and Betas who had monopolized the glee
club for the past year. The stunt consisted of bring
ing the platform a barrel labeled, "U. of C. Glee

hold established by these two rival societies. Out of
this barrel, to complete the figure, tumbled a
squealing pig.
Some say the pig escaped and was pursued at
this point by underclassmen Fijis with murderous
intent. At any rate that night the pig was incarcer
ated in the lower regions of the Fiji stronghold on
Dana Street, while Frank Norris staged an elaborate
ceremony worthy of the burnt offering. The date

Rush is an integral part of the Fraternity, becuase it determines our direction in the near
future. This year we had a two-week rush schedule
that was designed to give rushees an accurate view
of our Chapter and fraternity life in general. Rush
Chairman Chris Meadows and Social Chairman
Buddy Hendrick put together an interesting and
varied rush schedule.
WE VALUE YOUR OPINION
Please help us carry on the great membership
history in Phi Gamma Delta. We are looking for
young men who will be starting the University in
1980. You know the quality we demand. Select
the best and fill out this form and send it to the
house c/o RUSH.
Fijiuga
At press time we have 18 fine pledges.
Besides the usual preparation and problems that
go with rush, our Chapter was faced with the
change in drinking age from 18 to 19. Graduate
Brother Mike Quilling addressed the Chapter and
advised us of our liabilities. Measures were taken to
avoid legal problems, and still provide a good time
for the rushees.
