RUSSELL STREET REVIEW
SPRING 1985
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
Dear Brothers:
1would like to first thank our graduates for their tremen
dous support this year. Thanks to all of you, this chapter
remains at the top both campus-wide and nation-wide.
Special thanks are long overdue to our Purple
Legionaire, Dave Alexander, who has shown continuous
support to the chapter for over eight years. Also special

In closing, I would like to once again thank you for your
continued support, and remind you that Phi Gamma

thanks are in order to Doc Crowder, Jack Coffin, Jeff
Cooke, and Bill Miller for their constant contact with the
chapter.
The 1985 Norris Pig Dinner was nothing short of sensa
tional. I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who
attended. Special thanks goes to Lambda lota's Tim
Foley, who shared his NFL Superbowl experiences and
how Phi Gamma Delta has helped him to his many suc
cesses. His dynamic speech inspired all who attended,
especially the undergraduates. Thanks also goes to
brother David Mortell and his committee for their
organization of the dinner. Thanks Brothers!
Summer Rush has already begun at Lambda Iota. With
Jeff Hoogenboom and Mark Folta leading a fired-up
house for rush, we are sure to continue our top hold on
campus. I would like to encourage our Graduate Brothers
to give us a hand if they know of any. young men that
show Phi Gam characteristics. Please let us know, we

would be more than happy to consider them for
membership.
This spring we started the first annual Dad's Day Golf
Outing. An incredible time was had by all. About 15
father and son pairs hit the links, and over thirty fathers
attended the weekend festivities. After the golf outing,
we returned to the house for a night of interesting ac
tivities. A royal Phi Gam breakfast was prepared by 9:00,
but unfortunately no one was awake to attend.
For Mother's Day/U-Sing '85 Weekend the Phi Gams
were paired with the women of Alpha Gamma Delta.
We FIJIs and AGDs sang our way into the hearts of our
Mothers and the judges as we advanced to the Evening
Sing competition.
The party with the Moms that followed the competition
was the highlight of the year. Herb Albert, Fats Domino,
Glenn Miller, The Freshmen, . . . FIJI Moms were dan
cing until dawn!!!
On February 23, 1985 we held our annual Norris Pig
Dinner at the Trails in West Lafayette. It turned out to
be a fantastic day despite the inclement weather. Over
40 graduates came back to see and be with their Lamb
da Iota brothers.
We were very fortunate to have as our guest speaker
brother Tim Foley from the class of 1970. He was a
pleasure to meet and listen to as he gave a very enter
taining speech to close out the dinner.
A day after Pig Dinner we were inconvenienced by a
slight case of food poisoning which made brotherhood
really special, as unity illness was the main agenda for
several days.
Next year's dinner is scheduled for February 15th, with
the site to be announced. I would like to say thanks to
all the graduates who attended and made the dinner a
great success.
Lambda Iota is nearing a goal which few chapters in the
country can boast. The mortgage at 640 Russell is only
one year away from being paid off! Join us in our celebra

tion of the goal that will soon be a reality.

\r\nDAD'S WEEKEND 1985
This year on the weekend of March 30, 640 Russell Street
started a new tradition by having a Dad's weekend golf outing.
Despite the cold and damp weather, fourteen dads and their
sons played a nine hole scramble on the Purdue North
Course.
The foursome of the Hoogenbooms and the Reeds captured
the title with a fine score of two under par 34. Following the
outing, everyone was invited back to the house for an ex
cellently catered meal by Sarge Biltz. There were thirty dads
who came to be with their sons for the weekend. All the
brothers are hoping to continue this weekend for years to
come.

Many improvements have been made to the house this
spring, being mostly outside. The lawn has been thatched,
fertilized, and aerated which improved the lawn a great deal.
In the front of the house the garden committee has put in
an attractive flower box with decorative rock around one of

the trees. Eventually the other two trees will be completed
in a similar manner. Much thanks goes out to brother Eric
Roebuck and all the others who helped on the lawn.
A new porch was proposed for the north side of the house,
and estimates are currently being taken. This project would
include extending the current porch around the north side
and possibly having gas grills installed.

not fair so well as we placed seventh in fraternity competi
tion. Participation was not the problem, but quality of play
and bad breaks were. In slow pitch softball, we had two
undefeated teams in season play, but both were beaten ear
ly in playoff competition. Our returning basketball champs
were defeated in the quarterfinals of the playoff tournament.
We did have good participation in multitathlon, golf, and ten
nis doubles.

RUN FOR THE MONEY
Our annual run for leukemia with the Zeta chapter at Indiana
this past fall was a great success. As you may or may not
know, every year the visiting team for the annual Oaken
Bucket game runs the football to the home team's campus.
This past fall Indiana ran the football to Purdue.
We were very fortunate this year to have with us the ladies
of Pi Beta Phi sorority to help us fight the battle against
leukemia. This will now be annual event for the Pi Phis and
us.
Purdue vs. Northwestern
We raised about $2,500 for the Leukemia Society which was
greatly appreciated. Several of our brothers also participated
in the Leukemia society's telethon which was also a great suc
cess. Next year, we will run the football down to Indiana,
hopefully having a bus take the whole house so everyone will

\r\nUNIVERSITY SING
University Sing was a great time again this year as we and
Alpha Gamma Delta sorority sang our way into nightsing.
Even though we didn't place in nightsing competition, the
reward of singing in Elliot Hall of Music makes all the hard
work worth its while. Thanks to brothers Richard Lynch and
Michael Zachman for their extra time and efforts in starting
this new tradition at Phi Gamma Delta.
To complement our exciting weekend of singing, 35 of our

mothers joined us in the weekend festivities including a din
ner catered by Apple Annies, nightsing, and our wildest and
most enjoyable party of the year. Thanks to brothers Mark
Malven and Eric Roebuck for a job well done in preparing
for the mothers. Once again the marvelous mothers club
graciously and unselfishly gave money for house im
provements. This year's improvements include two new
house vacuum sweepers and a new tape player for the house
stereo. Also they donated $400 towards a computer system
with hookup to the University.
Thanks Mom's!!

\r\nSUMMER RUSH 1985
This year we are instituting a new idea for our rush program.
We are having a summer rush weekend to invite several
freshmen that willbe attending Purdue next fall to the house,
mark Folta and I will be putting everything together, but we
are depending on our graduates and the undergraduates for
our needed rush recommendations. We are hoping that this
weekend will give us a head start on a fantastic fall rush pro
gram. The goal of this program is not to replace fall rush but
to enhance it. Hopefully this will enable us to eliminate our
present spring rush.
The weekend we have picked is July 26-28. We feel that this
is close enough to the start of school that we will not forget the
rushee's faces. We have several activities planned including a
Softball toumey, a pig roast, and a small party on Saturday night.
A recommendation form is included in the publication. If you
could please fill out the form and send it back to Mark before
the middle of June it would be greatly appreciated. We will
decide on which rushees to pick up for the weekend and who
we will save for the fall. If everything goes as planned we will
be headed for a pledge class of 40 for the class of 1989.
