Phi Gamma Delta, DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana
With beer in hand, Eric Doolittle leads riders and Cams in
For the second year in a row, Phi
Gamma Delta won the most illustrious
trophy at DePauw University, the Little
500 championship trophy. Sporting a
pink uniform so bright that if one
looked to the sky he would still see FIJI
on the track, FIJI led nearly the entire
race.
After being boxed in at the start,
junior Garn Huggins dropped to the
back of the pack and then moved to the
front along the outside - a move that
Paul Stanish used in last years race
to open a lead. On the eighth, Garn
broke from the pack opening a quarter
of a lap lead! After senior Paul Stanish
rode, the lead was opened even more.
Sophomore Ned Sizer, who won fastest lap average honors with a time of
35.76 seconds, rode next and began to

lap the slower riders. Freshman, Brian
Elson, took off next and continued
the pace. Before the sixtieth lap of the
160 lap race, FIJI had lapped the entire
field once and some teams several
times. The next hundred laps FIJI just
continued to ride hard and very fast,
finishing the race three and a half laps
ahead of second place, Delta Tau Delta.
The FIJI fans kept up the encouragement throughout the race
despite the large lead, probably
remembering the come from behind
victory that we so much enjoyed last
year. Winning the race was not the only
highlight of the event filled week. The
sportsmanship showed by FIJI was
phenomenal! At the awards presentation, the predominantly FIJI crowd led

and third place teams. Also, riders and
team members were acknowledged for
helping the other teams before, during,
and after the race. This was by far the
greatest accomplishment for all at Phi
Garn, because it will improve our
relations considerably.
We were paired with Alpha Phi for
the week and after we painted their
sidewalk pink with purple lightning
bolts, they returned the favor. Much
was pink around Phi Garn that week
with the house t-shirts being modelled
after the rider's uniforms. We all wore
hot pink shirts with the logo: "Lightning
never strikes twice in the same place ...
. . . or does it?"
Just as the celebration party, the
awards banquet was crowded and FIJI
dominated. Winning the race was one

thing, but winning it the way we did
this year is history. Garn Huggins
started the award sweep by being
honored as most valuable rider. He
also just missed fastest lap honors by
one tenth of a second, followed closely
by Ned Sizer, five hundredths of a
second behind Garn. Paul Stanish,
Garn, and Ned were all chosen as
members of first team all-star. This was
quite a feat to have three members of
the same team on the first team, but that
is FIJI for you! The most surprising
statistic is that Ned, Brian, Garn, and
Paul finished one through four respectively in the average lap times. This
means that there was not a man on the
track that could keep up with any of
FIJI's riders.
We plan to do this again next year
as sophomore, Matt Quirk, trained
hard this year and will be ready to step
into a racing spot to help FIJI retain the
trophy. Lightning did strike twice and
Phi Gamma Delta Defied Mother
Nature.

Summer 1985
Rush Report
The 1985 Lambda Rush Express
is well on it's way to a much awaited
fruitful and productive week of formal
rush in August. Since March 1, over
70 rushees have visited Lambda and
have not only seen, but experienced
the brotherhood and friendship that is
ever present within the chapter.
As usual our best chance to meet
some of the rushees was Little 500
weekend, when 10 young men descended upon Lambda for the weekend. The team's 1st place finish in the
race no doubt made a lasting impression on our guests, several of whom are
potential spring pledges.
Once again we are planning several
summer rush parties; one each in
Cincinnati and Indianapolis and two in
the Chicago area. Through the use of
an improved mailing system and a
concerted effort on the part of nearby
brothers, attendance at the parties
should be much improved allowing the
rushees to get a better, more complete
look at FIJI while at the same time
providing brothers the opportunity to
become familiar with the rushees
before formal rush begins in the fall.
As the summer progresses and the
express picks up speed, bystanders are
advised to jump on by sending any and
all recommendations, ideas, or additional comments you may have which
will aid us during rush next fall.
Fraternally,
Joe Short '87

President's Corner
Things are going quite well at
Lambda. After winning our second
consecutive Little 500 bike race, the
chapter's spirit and enthusiasm is at
an all time high. The house has capitalized extensively on our victory in the
prestigous bike race in such areas as
public relations and our relationship
with the university. Little 500 also
proved to be a very successful rush
weekend with over ten young men
visiting the chapter.
Our rush chairmen, Joe Short and
Jim Kemmler, have been doing an outstanding job and we are confident of
our success in rush next year. However, if you are aware of any incoming
freshman that would be a likely FIJI
prospect, please get in touch with Joe
Short.
Rush, as all of you are aware, is a
time when the house must look its very
best, but the house is in need of some
attention. Additional furniture and
physical improvements to the house
are needed to insure that the house is
in top condition. Any assistance that
you could contribute would be deeply
appreciated.
June 8 and 9 are the dates of Alumn i
Weekend. I encourage all graduate
brothers and their families to attend.
Alumni Weekend is one of the best
opportunities to visit the chapter house
and to renew old friendships. I would
like to thank Brother Harry E. McGoon
'31 for his thoughtful donation to the
chapter of composites from his years
at Lambda.
As the end of the school year quickly approaches, the underclassmen come
to the realization that the seniors will
not be back next fall. The class of 1985
has contributed significantly to the
chapter during their four years at
Lambda. They will be sincerely missed.
The undergraduate chapter wishes
the class of 1985 the very best in their
future endeavors.

GRADUATION
MAY25
This veritable shan-gra-la was enjoyed by all at FIJI ISLE '85.
Scholarship Update
Scholarship at the Phi Garn house
underwent a change in the chairmanship following the semester and the
election of ex-chairman Mark Sifferlen
to house treasurer. The first goal was to
build a new library since the old one
had been removed durin_g_ "Delta
Week". With the help of new initiate,
Brian Elson, this task was completed
three weeks into the semester. The
contribution of carpeting for the new
library by Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Holub
also helped out in making the Lambda
Chapter's library one of the best on
campus.
The test file grew by thirty-one
complete subjects through the efforts
of Historian, Ron Dwenger. This
summer will begin an intense filing
system for the Phi Cam's Scholarship
Committee. New files and new ideas
are being pumped in as the Fiji House
prepares to show the DePauw campus
its commitment toward perserverance
in the pursuit of scholarship.
Congratulations to our graduating
seniors P.J. Stanish, D.J. Writer, David
Schmitz, Tom Johnson, Bob Bailey,
Pete Corbett, Tom Kivett, Bob Wesselkamper, Mike Runnels, Thomas Kinney,
Greg Anderson and to our matriculating junior M. Nader Sharifi.
Special congratulations to Doug
Nemecek who after three years at
D.P.U. is graduating with senior status
and is third in G .P.A. on campus.
