Saturday, September 5, was a beautifully sunny day; a great day for racing. Approximately 300 amateur and professional, indi vidual and team bicyclists raced in a total of seven races on a 0.83 mile course around Slayter HI!!. A whole house effort was afforded in orde;^-tp make this the success thakjsjWas. The race attracted top riders from across the countryMn- Eric Ragsdale and Peter Klngma take care of Registration for the Criterium. cluding the number four won(a^'s racer in the world; the Schwinn-lcy Hot Team, number one team in the nation; and the Ten Speed Drive team, nothing but compli ments concerning the efficiency and professionalism of the race were given by the racers. The inspiration for the produc tion of this race came from Bill Ryan (Lambda lota '90), who was in a swimming accident which left him paralyzed from the waist down and partially paralyzed in the arms. Despite the prediction that Bill would never walk again, he has started walking with a walker and has full range of motion in both of his arms. This Cyclists start off on another competitive race in the Fiji Criterium. has all been a result of his hard work and persistence in the therapy and rehabilitation he has undergone at the Miami Project. The chapter has great hopes that Bill will return to Purdue next fall. In addition, the chapter plans to continue hosting the FIJI Criterium in years to come, hoping that it will grow through sponsor ship and participation so that more money can be raised for the cure for paralysis, a tragic demise that has plagued the Lambda lota chapter in recent years.
