ftle sister. Janet was accompanied by Lisa Smith on the piano.
A-special thanks goes out to all of our little sisters who helped
us greatly during rush.
Next in the pref parties, Robert Siedell, EM '74, reemphasized the five points and explained the voting system. We
at EM want to thank Allan and Robert for their time and effort
toward one of the most successful rushes her at EM.
When the brothers arrived at the coliseum, thirty one eager
pledges ran up the stairs. This is the most ever in EM's history.
These thirty one men are truely a well diversified group. They
are from nine different states—from Pennsylvania to Texas to

Florida. The pledge class has a ACT average of 24.5. Their
majors include: engineering, sports medicine, political science,
and communications. Also in post rush we added two more
pledges, bringing the pledge class number to thirty-three. These
pledges are the result of a great rush from the undergraduates
to the graduates!
1987 Rush
As fall 1987 approached the annual rush workshop was held
at scenic Lake Tiak-'O-Khata. This time was well spent. The
workshop directors-Jerry Fuller LM'Sl, John King EM '86 and
Tommy Scrogins EM '77—gave the under graduates an insight
into rush techniques and strategies. Sophomores, Juniors, and
Seniors, alike learned something at this years workshop.
Rush 1987 started on Friday, September 18th. Three hun
dred ninty eight men signed up for rush, which is a slight in
crease from the previous year. During the first 12 parties, Robert
Cook, EM '90, put together a fantastic slide show that was en
joyable for both the rushees and the entire chapter. For the next
six pref parties, Allan Callicot, EM '86, was the featured
speaker. Allan stressed the five points on which Phi Gamma
Delta stands and what Phi Gamma Delta looks for in a man.
The entertainment for the six pref parties was provided .sgaitl
this year by Janet Saul, Miss MSU 1986 and a former fuJI lit- )

Phi Gamma Delta this past year finished first in grades among
the row fraternities. A strong second semester, in which the Fiji's
had a 2.843 overall average, help pull us ahead of the ATO's to
capture the overall tide. This makes the 8th year out 8 years that
Phi Gamma Delta was first on the row in overall grades.

This was a pretty good year socially. Other than the infamous
informal hall parties that grew to gorgantuan proportions we

KA. Oh, I forgot. The KA's shafted us. We had beach swaps
with the $M's, a frigid beach party with Xfl's and a fake'WWIII

New Orleans, LA. on the world renown river boat.

out as good.
The pastyear has been a very active one in every facet of our
chapter and this holds true for Campus of Community Service
also. Sigma Mu was trived to maintain a good social service
program and we think that we may succeeded this year.
The fall kicked off with Sigma Mu's contributions of money
and time in the United Way's Mississippi State/Ole Miss Con
tribution competition. We gave liberally of our resources to help
the campaign succeed. Mississippi State crushed Ole Miss in

the competition.
Then, the pledges organized a party at Starkville Manor Nur

cess and a general good time while the pleges had an oppor
tunity to share their time with people who truly enjoy it.
With the semester nearly over, the brothers once again join
The fall intramurals have already begun with FIJI teams entered
in every sport. The FIJI swim team, behind a great re-lay team,
won the school championship. The flag football teams are star
ed with the ladies of Delta Gamma for our annual Headstart
Note; The Dudes did win a game, which is their first win in
four years.
"Turkey Trot." We helped kids at the public kindergarten make
edible thanksgiving turkey treats and remind them of the true
meaning of Thanksgiving. As usual, the brothers returned home
thankful for the opportunity to help these children as well as
for the fellowship we had with all the ladies of Delta Gamma.
During the spring semester, we had our annual Columbus
Sheriffs Boys Ranch visit. All afternoon, we played basketball,
football, frisbee, soccer, and softall with the 50 or so boys at
the ranch. As evening fell, we served hamburgers and hotdog's
for all and had fellowship.
After the tragic Chi Omega accident at Ole Miss a competi
tion blood drive was organized here between all organizaion
ting their new seasons. We have four teams—two active teams
and two pledge teams.

on campus. Sigma Mu gave a great deal of blood even with
many understandable fears and placed second among fraternities
in percentage of blood donated. All the blood was used to build
,
back the reserve that had been depleted after the accident.
As a final gesture before the school year ended, the brothers
all cleaned their closets to donate old clothes the needy. These
clothes were turned over to the Salvation Army.

Homecoming '87
Editor's Note
Homecoming activities this year held on October 3. Activities
for graduates, undergraduates and parents filled the day from
early in the afternoon to late in the evening. Saturday's schedule
began with Parent's Day activities which included a meeting of
the Mary McCarty Club and a slide show that provided a fun
yet informative look at Phi Gamma Delta at Mississippi State.
Following these Parent's Day events a brunch for parents,
brothers, graduates, and guests was held. From the house, the
crowd mingled to Scott Field to watch the Bulldogs squeaked
by the Memphis State Tigers 9-6. Afterwards, the sounds of

An all-Greek luncheon was held the next morning with

the former Student Association president Jerry Thames. His
speech was an analysis of the Greek system at MSU. Follow

looking at their principles and ideals on which they were found

Following the luncheon was the initiation and indoctrination

We brothers of EM would like to thank all of the many peo

like to say thanks for all the letters, telegrams, and phone calls
wishing use well.
In April of 1969, the 16 original founders of Delta Colony
at MSU set their goal-a charter in 1970. Now that we have
achieved this goal, we have set another goal-getting a house.
Now as this newsleeter goes to press, this goal is realized. EM
is well on the road to being the number one Greek organization
at MSU.

Dear Graduate Brother
As many of you expressed interest in being informed of the date
of pig dinner a little earlier than usual, I am pleased to inform
you that the chapter has already started making tentative plans for
the swine dine.
The 19th Annual Sigma Mu Norris Pig Dinner will be held Saturday
night, February 20, 1988. I sincerely hope that informing you now
regarding the date will more easily facilitate your attendence.
Reservation cards will be sent out soon.
And, in an effort to make this the best pig dinner ever, I welcome
your ideas for speakers, aivards, and events surrounding the dinner.
Tlie chapter already has several new ideas concerning the dinner,
including rejuvinating some of the older traditions. However, these
ideas are only a drop in the bucket.
Again, the chapter anticipates the best pig dinner ever and hopes
you will come and be a part of it.
If you have any comments or
suggestions, please feel free to write me at the above address or
call at (601)323-2655.
