KO Fijis and their dads take a moment from Dads' Weekend 1987 activities for a photo. A fine-looking group of gentlemen!
Brothers Active on Campus:
KO Takes Second in Coon Plaque
As the new house manager, I am pleased to tell you about
some of the good things that are going on at Oregon State. Our
striving for excellence at Kappa Omicron is evident in our
scholarship. With our 7th-place finish in all-fraternity grades, this
year looks to be one of our best ever.
Phi Gams are active on campus, participating in a wide va
riety of activities. For six consecutive years, KO brothers have
held the Greek Week chair. Brothers are also active on the IPG
Judicial Board, IPG Sing Committee, Greek Council, in Cardinal
Key, Thanes, MUPC, The Barometer, OSU Rugby Club, varsity
football, track, and rally, and as editor of the Greek Columns.
Dads' Weekend was highlighted by the Beavs'58-54 victory
over Cal. During half time. Brother Marty Breen ('87) was pre
sented a plaque for his selection to the Pac-10 All-Academic
Team. Brothers John W. Stuart(KO '59) and H. Scott McCart
ney(U of AZ) came and spent the weekend with their sons, Jim
('88) and J. Scott ('88), respectively.
At last summers' Ekklesia, our Beaver Fiji placed second in
competition for the Coon Plaque. We received the John Templeton McCarty Chapter Efficiency Award for the second con
secutive year. This spring, we will be combining with brothers
Graduate Program Sound
We are in the process of reorganizing our graduate rela
tions committee in order to involve and serve you better. There
are now over 1,000 living members who have passed through
our chapter, and we know only a limited number of you. We are
hoping that you may be able to stop by the house or make it to
the Norris Pig Dinner. We also hope that everyone has some
fond memories when they read the newsletter.
The Norris Pig Dinner is almost here! On Sunday, April 12,
at 4 PM, several hundred Kappa Omicron Fijis will converge at
the Portland Center Red Lion. If you have not already made your
reservation, please do so as soon as possible. We are contacting
several graduates and supplying them with phone numbers of
their pledge class brothers, so that they can contact them.
In closing, if there is anything we can do for you or some
thing you would like to do for us, please call. If you are interest
ed in organizing a reunion of your class, we'd be happy to help.
If you are ever passing through Corvallis, please stop by. We
have sit-down dinner at 5;30 PM on most Monday and Wednes
day nights and we would love to have you here. If you would like
to send us an old Fiji story or some Fiji news, we would be
happy to print it in our next edition of the Beaver Fiji. Most of
all, remember "Phi Gamma Delta is not for college days alone."
— Jon Finley, Graduate Relations Chairman (503-758-7505)
from all over the West Coast in a bicycle rally to raise money for
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). We will be riding from
Corvallis to the Epsilon Omicron Chapter in Eugene.
We are still looking for a Purple Legionnaire and members
for a board of chapter advisors. Our previous requests for help
in these two specific areas have not been effective. Although
your monetary contributions pay for this publication and various
other activities, your involvement and presence are also benefi
cial to us. Fraternally, — Terry D. Chubb, House Manager

Spring 1987
THE BEAVER FIJI
KO Shows Vast Improvement
in Scholarship
Scholarship is on the upswing at Kappa Omicron. Sparked
by a sharp pledge class, our grades jumped from 19th place last
spring term to 7th this fall term. The live-in members placed
10th, live-out members 14th, and pledges placed 9th.
Our scholarship program consists of mandatory study ta
bles twice a week, hall monitors, and study hours. The scholar
ship dinner at the beginning of each term honors the academic
achievements of brothers and pledges. Finally, the newly remoddeled house library has improved the academic tone by giving
the brothers a quiet place to study.
Some of our highest grades came from Larry Dunnell (Jr.,
Bus., 4.0), Todd Girvan (Jr., Psych., 4.0), Tony Boatright (Sr.,
Bus., 3.94), Mark Fulk (Fr., Psych., 3.79), and Chris Troeh (Jr.,
Bus., 3.75).
Hopefully, we have begun a positive trend in striving for
academic excellence. Fraternally, — Brian Price, Scholarship
Chairman
Treasurer
Continuity. It is vital to the existence of the chapter, espe
cially in the area of finances. Through the last few years we have
built, and continue to build, a solid financial foundation.
Currently, the chapter is financially sound. With 30 new
pledges, the house is only one under capacity with 63 living in.
Informal rush is also going well, and hopefully we can keep the
house at capacity throughout the next year.
The position of treasurer is very challenging, but very re
warding. What I have learned has opened my eyes to a whole
new world.
Finally, I would like to repeat that "Phi Camma Delta is not
for college days alone," and that the advice and support of grad
uate brothers is always appreciated. Please feel free to write to
me at the house with any questions or suggestions. Fraternally,
— Brian Price, Treasurer
KO Very Active in Community Service
Each year, it has been a tradition for OSU fraternities and
sororities to donate time, money, and service to the Corvallis
community and various charitable organizations. At Kappa
Omicron, we proudly say that we are working extremely hard to
uphold this tradition.
Our chapter has set a goal of no less than 200 donated
community service hours each term. However, we are constant
ly striving to exceed this goal and have successfully done so in
the past year. Many of our larger projects have included design
ing and building a playground fence for a local preschool, work
ing with the American Lung Association in helping people break
the habit of smoking, and the cleaning up of local playgrounds
and parks. Some smaller activities include donating blood at
OSU blood drives, coaching and refereeing sports activities for
the City of Corvallis, taking care of our local neighbors' yards,
and supplying 15 underprivileged children with Christmas gifts.
Our future community service plans include many of these
same past activities as well as some larger commitments, such as
helping in the renovation of the'Majestic Theater in Corvallis. If
any of our graduate brothers have ideas for community service
projects, whether they be projects done in the past or new ideas,
we would like very much to hear from you! It is my hope that we
might raise our goal for community service hours to an even
higher number in the near future! Fraternally, — Paul E. Louis
(L-r); Toby McCourt, Joe Kupillas, and Jon Kukula are
mighty proud to be Fiji pledges.
Rush Report and Request
As the new rush chairman, I am happy to inform you that
rush is once again underway. We are setting up our rush com
mittee, but we have not chosen our assistant yet.
Informal rush has done an outstanding job thus far this year
and we pledged three more fine young men at the beginning of
winter term. They are:
Jon Kukula
Joe Kupillas
Toby McCourt
Hillsboro, OR
Eagle Point, OR
Pleasant Hill, CA
The goal of formal rush this year is to get approximately 25
quality-packed pledges and, although we wish that we could do
everything ourselves, we will still need your help. Please send us
information (on the enclosed rushee recommendation card) on
any friends or relatives that are considering attending Oregon
State so that we may contact them as soon as possible. Your
cooperation is greatly appreciated. Fraternally, — Brit Anderson,
Rush Chairman
KOs Building and Regrouping in Sports
Despite our unsuccessful fall term in IMs, Kappa Omicron is
on the up and up for winter term. Although we are not fielding a
water polo team because of lack of interest, we will be dominant
in basketball and billiards.
As for our basketball team, unfortunately, the big man from
Lakeview, Joe Bonnrens, is out for this season because of knee
problems. However, he is contributing to the program by coach
ing the Fiji hoopsters. Starting this season out on the right foot,
the Fiji "A" team crushed preseason favorite Theta Chi, 34-31.
Also, there are three other Fiji hoop teams competing this term
and all have promising futures.
Possibly our best chance this term for an all-university
championship team will be our billiards team. Without a doubt,
the KO Fijis could field at least two teams that could beat any
house in our league, and our biggest problem is deciding which
four players will compete each night.
Basically, this will be a building and regrouping year for the
KO Fijis and we will make a more organized effort to move to the
orange league next year. Fraternally, — Mark Fulk, IM
Chairman

Hark your calendars for the upcoming events which are featured on page one. The
Horris Pig Dinner,
Moms' Weekend,
Greek Week, and Commencement all promise special
times with ycur KO brothers. You have already received a flyer outlining the Pig Dinner
and, hopefully,
many of you have made plans to attend. Haking an effort to keep the
fraternal tie strong is important -- "Phi Gamma Delta is not for college days alone!"
Finally, we turn your attention to the Honor Roll of Contributors located on page
four. Through April 3, 66 brothers (including one gift in memoriam) have given $2,340,
and each is thanked for his generosity.
To maintain a self-supporting alumni
communications program, every brother is asked to give once per year. Please add your
name to the 1987 financial foundation begun by your brothers, by making a contribution.
Also, write a note about yourself, and return your note and your check - either or both
