For this issue of Lambda Nu Today, we would like
to place the spotlight on James McFarland.
Brother McFarland attended the University of
Nebraska from 1965 until his graduation in 1970. One
of the reasons Brother McFarland is in the spotlight is
his election to the Nebraska State Legislature. James
McFarland served the 28th District in Lincoln for a
short period after Chris Beutler's resignation and
then went on to win the election himself.
Brother McFarland was involved in numerous ac
tivities both in and out of the house while at the
University. Heading this list was his varsity football
experience, in which he was an outstanding per
former. He also played basketball and volleyball for
the chapter. Brother McFarland was also a member
New Scholarship
Introduced
During the past year, the Omaha Graduate
Chapter established a scholarship fund
through an agreement with the University of
Nebraska Foundation. The purpose of the
fund is to provide scholarships for regularly
enrolled entering freshman at the University
of Nebraska. This scholarship will be award
ed to a Lambda Nu freshman on the basis of
academic excellence, leadership qualities,
and general activities.
The graduate Chapter is encouraging all
brothers to make contributions to the Univer
sity Foundation and to designate a portion of
the contribution to the Scholarship Fund of
the Omaha Graduate Chapter of Phi Gammi
Delta. Hopefully, with strong support from
Lambda Nu graduates, this fund will soon
have sufficient resources to provide
assistance to deserving students.
of the Young Democrats, which undoubtedly in
fluenced his position in state government.
Brother
McFarland
has
been
involved
with
members of Phi Gamma Delta in recent years. He
has attended many pre-game functions, attended
some Monday night dinners, and even spoke to the
undergraduates last fall.
The key things that Brother McFarland enjoyed
about the house were the atmosphere the house
creates to invite socialization and the interaction it
promotes. Brother McFarland credits Phi Gamma
Delta with his being able to meet a variety of men
from all over the state and making lasting friendships
and contacts that still exist today.
James McFarland also credits Phi Gama Delta with
a strong cohesiveness and he takes pleasure in
knowing it helped him with his education and voca
tional training.
Brother McFarland now lives right here in Lincoln.
Along with his legislative position, he also works for
Burns Law Offices.
We at Phi Gamma Delta commend the achieve
ments and support that James McFarland has given
us, and we wish him the very best in the future.

would like to share with you some of the activities
that have been undergone. We have initiated fifteen
fine young men as brothers into the Fraternity. Addi

We had our annual all-house retreat on February
14 to set goals for our Cabinet and the house has pro
ven once again to be a success. The following week,
twenty brothers made a trek to Ames, Iowa, for our
annual Section Convention.
The month of March has brought some excellent
news for the physical structure of the house. This
summer the House Corporation plans to completely
remodel the second and third floors on the "old"

Mom's Message...

Fiji Sons:
This is the second year that the Fiji Fraternity has
worked with the Lincoln Public Schools. This joint
venture enables students who have mental retarda
tion to receive work experience in a realistic com
munity setting. Once a week students, acompanied
by their instructor Sue Williams, work with me to per
form cleaning tasks in the fraternity living room and
dining room. This opportunity allows the university
students, as well as Lincoln Public School students,to
interact on a social basis while learning about each
other and the world of work.
I can genuinely say that I am pleased with the
behavior of our Fiji men during their evening study
period. There has also been a marked improvement
in table etiquette and manners in general. I hope
these improvements will continue through the re
mainder of the semester.
I thank you men for the respect and kindness you
have shown me during the 1986-1987 school year.
Truly yours—
Marion bringing in supper.
