A War(Love) Story
Jennifer VanZanten is a staff member ofStudent Publications. Her hus
band, Bill, is a junior economics major at the university. This is Jennifer's
personal account of what it's like to have a loved one in the gulf.
As newlyweds go, we are much like
the rest. However, our circumstances
differ than most. I discovered this
when my husband and I were married
three days before he was deployed to
active duty and ordered to serve our
country in the Persian Gulf.
Our "honey
moon" was spent
saying heUo and

ings and dreams. It's very different
expressing oneself on paper, mailing
the thoughts and then anxiousfy await

our daily activities in order to paint a
picture for each of what is happening
in our separate worlds.

his fife is about.
We also write about our dreams

in the midst of restructuring and pursuing a new chapter house, our chapter
has not been very persistent in sending out scheduled newsletters. Well, those
days are history and I am excited to say that this marks the return of the
renowned Sun Tiki Newsletter. Building on issues of the past and adding a
twist ofthe new FIJI spirit, one ofour main goals as an undergraduate chapter
is to continue to keep our Graduate Brothers informed of what is going on
here at Alpha Sigma. We know that your days as a Phi Gam are stiU aUve and
still important to you as Ufe progresses.
Although I have very little experience editing chapter publications, I'm
quite pleased with the results and our new outlook. This newsletter and the
former one just completed (with the input of Terry Boersma '88 and Hans
KeUner'88) have not only been my first newsletters, but wUl also regrettably
be my last. With a bit ofluck, I will be graduating in May to get my feet wet
in the "real" world. However,I am confident in the brothers that will take over
and continue this publication. Improvements wiU be made with each publi
cation as we become more experienced again.
We would appreciate any comments and/or criticisms that anyone has for
future publications, and even more importantly, we would like to here from
you about what you are currently doing. I hope you enjoy the articles provided
by the brothers and that your best memories are sparked again and again with
each new issue. Finally,we would like nothingmore than to see each and every
one of you at the upcoming Norris Pig Dinner,Islander Festivities, or while
at a visit to the new chapter house.

To the Brothers ofPhi Gamma Delta,
Upon coming to ASU in the Fall of
I came to Arizona State from my
hometown of Seattle, WA where I
1989 from Yuma,AZ,I was not sure
aboutjoining a Fraternity. Finally in
pledged FIJI Spring of'89 and since the Spring of 19901 decided to pledge
then I have matured more than ever Alpha Sigma. I was part of the first
before in my life. FIJI has helped me class to be initiated in the chapter
Sigma,I was a typical Arizona home
grown G.D.I. Laboring long,tedious
hours,stucfying Purchasing ferociously,
and partying but with no real concept
of the word. Then one day it hit me,
I broke into a cold sweat, my mouth
went dry and I had the sudden urge to
boil a bone. I discovered I had what
was called the "Fiji Fever." The only
cure is to become a Brother in Phi
Gamma Delta. Upon entering the
realm of the Phi Gams,I was greeted
with warm handshakes and friendly
faces. Many new and exciting chal
lenges were placed upon me,the main
one being entrusted with the position
of Corresponding Secretary. So far,
being a member of the cabinet has
been a sobering experience, but one
in which I feel that I can grow with.
With the support of my Brothers, I
feel that this year will be one of growth
and prosperity.

A Call To All
Purple Legfonnaire Report
First allow me to thank the un

lowing me to serve as Purple Le
gionnaire ofthe Alpha Sigma Chap
ter. It is indeed an honor and pleas
ure to be involved once again.
The Alpha Sigma Chapter is in
transition. This is the first time in
three years the undergraduate chap
ter has experienced the advantage
of having a chapter house. Since a
majority of the undergraduate broth
ers have not been blessed with the

responsibilities associated with a fra
ternity house, a call to action from
all graduate brothers is needed.
Graduate Brothers can add knowl
edge, insight, and ideas from the
past that n .y have been lost in the
three years ofrestructuring. Gradu
ates can also gain a great sense of
satisfaction by helping undergradu
ates achieve their goals. As one
knows, it feels good to see a plan
created and implemented to a suc
cessful conclusion.
You as a Graduate Brother, with
your "secret" to success in busi
ness, can add that needed dimen
sion to create a chapter we can all
be proud of. Think how much
more successful your undergradu
ate days would have been if you
had the experience and knowledge
currently possessed. Now is the
time for all good men to come to
the aid of their chapter.
Let us all succeed together.
From The Gridiron
Arizona State has the largest intramural program in the country, and the
Alpha Sigma Fijis are a dominant force. In the fall of 1990,we placed 2nd in
Softball out of 85 teams. In football we finished 3rd out of 132 teams. Our
basketball team, as of February 25, is still unbeaten and the #1 seeded team
at ASU. We have not lost a regular season basketball game in three years and
boast a 19-2 record since 1988. Already with the start of the spring softball
season, we are a top-ranked contender and we expect to win the champion
ship.
At Alpha Sigma,we enter competitive and non-competitive teams in every
sport. The idea is to enable everyone to go out and enjoy themselves through
competition. But even if brothers do not participate in a certain sport, they
are always on the sidelines rooting us on with at least 25 other Fijis.
Our point teams this year have accumulated a 29-11-1 record,(a winning
percentage of .716) and we are Arizona State's undefeated division and
bracket championsin football, basketball, fall softball, and wrestling. The Fiji

competitive and non-competitive teams combined, have a phenomenal .613
winning percentage, which is constantly improving.
Intramurals are only a small part ofthe excellence at Alpha Sigma. We are
always proud to play for and represent not only our chapter, but the excellence
of Fijis everywhere.
