FALL RUSH IS UNDERWAY
By Jeff Rosenthal ('93) • Rush Co-Chairman
As we all know. Rush is one of the most vital elements in the
continual growth of Kappa Deutreron. The undergraduate chap
ter has already begun the search for young men who are a cut
above. Native Weekend, our major spring rush event, has come
and gone leaving the brotherhood with many positive ideas of
what next Fall's rush will bring. However, suggestions and rec
ommendations from Graduate Brothers are crucial in our selec
tion process. The names that you contribute will help us compile
a list of prospective rushees who can be invited to our summer
rush activities.
Already in the planning stages are a Braves
game, the St. Simon's Music Festival, a rush get-together in Ma-
con, and a party here in Athens. Again, your recommendations
are vital for a strong rush.
We encourage you to send any information to the house in care
of our Rush Chairmen, Jeff Rosenthal or Geoff Meacham.
INSIDE:
PHI GAMS EXCEL
IN ACADEMICS
By Don Swift ('92) • Scholarship Chairman
Winter Quarter 1991 proved to be an outstanding one in the
world of FUl academics. The Chapter boasted its best grade
point average in five years with a 2.99. Considering that there
are now over one hundred brothers and pledges, this is indeed a
tremendous accomplishment. FUl was first among the Govern
or's League Fraternities and second overall, falling short one-one
hundredth of a point to Beta which has less than 50 members.
One should note however, that the Phi Gams showed their usual
tenacity In pursuing grade changes and aithough the official re
port from the IFC does not reflect these changes the Chapter's
actual GPA was above a 3.00. Congratulations go out to the
whole chapter for proving that academics are still a vital element
here at Kappa Deuteron.

PARENTS'DAYA BIG SUCCESS
SPRING 1991
By DOUG PERRY ('92) • Parents' Day Chairman
Spring quarter at the University of
Georgia, as many of you still vividly
remember, is one of the most trying and difficult
challenges of undergraduate life. The distractions are
overwhelming and spring fever incurable; but as you
can see from this publication, the chapter hopes to
carry over the momentum of one of its best quarters
in recent history to combat this challenge. It makes
me extremely proud to write this Gavel's Report
knowing that last quarter the chapter achieved the
highest GPA Kappa Deuteron has seen in five years
and continues to dominate campus life.
Spring quarter is a very busy time here at Kappa
Deuteron.

On Sunday, April 14th, Kappa Deuteron held a Parents'
Day Luncheon at the house. The attendance was over 200
making this event one of the largest ever. The schedule
consisted of a lunch catered by Strickland's Restaurant,
Drew Meadows sharing the values of Phi Gamma Delta,
and last but not least was the entertainment provided by
the Kappa Delta Sorority Washboard Band. The parents
also showed keen interest in getting involved with the
house campaign. The mothers of the Mary McCarty Club
decided to provide the fraternity with a new computer. At
the end of the day the general tone was high and the broth
ers' parents left knowing that their son had chosen the best
fraternity on campus.

NOT FOR
COLLEGE DAYS
ALONE
Ken Murphy '78
We often recite our motto that Phi
Gamma Delta is "not for college days
alone." By this, we usually mean that
graduate brothers should continue their
association with each other and their in
volvement in the undergraduate chap
ters. However, from a broader perspec
tive, our motto should remind us that we
should continue to adhere to the com
mon values which first drew us together
in the fraternity. The values of Phi
Gamma Delta, as derived from the Ritu
al and from the preamble to our Consti
tution, have been expressed in five
statements. We are united by friendshio. We promote the pursuit of knowl
edge. We encourage service. We be
that our daily lives can be more than
routine execution of repetitive tasks. To
do so, we must pursue knowledge - not
only knowledge of ourselves and the
world around us. With this knowledge,
we can grow and improve, both individu
ally and collectively.
The last three presidents have re

For a graduate brother,
The increasing problem of alienation
in today's society has been described in
great detail by sociologists and psychol
ogists. Alvin Toffler, for example, has
described how, by defining our relation
ships with people in functional terms, we
have created the disposable person, or
Modular Man.
The interpersonal in
volvement which is necessary to over
come alienation can only be achieved
through friendship that unites us with
others.
Some are major decisions on lifeshaping issues. Others are everyday
decisions involving how we deal with
others. These choices can be evaluated
using the simple criteria of expedience
and pleasure or through a considered
judgment of right and wrong. Exercising
judgment between right and wrong is
the essence of morality, and decisionmaking based on such judgment is what
distinguishes mankind from animals.
BIATHLON SET FORJUNE 1st

By Blake Batley ('93) • Biathlon Director
The 1991 Lin Hardin/FIJI Biathlon is just around the corner. On the morning
of June 1, we aim to be host to one of the Southeast's newest and finest biath
lons. The town of Winterville will again be the site of the competition. As of
late, we have received some incredible news which gives us a big start. It was
the announcement of our four corporate sponsors. Marietta Toyota, The Mead
Corporation, Chipman -Union, Inc., and WUOG 90.5FM. WUOG will be broad
casting live from Winterville the day of the race. Since the race is now a na
tional qualifier, we expect the competition to be stronger that the last races.
This competition will provide greater recognition for the event this year, as well
as the future. We ecnourage graduates to come join in the fun either as a par
ticipant or a spectator. If you know of any biathletes or anyone else interested
in participating please contact us. For more information or suggestions please
contact Blake Baltey, Biathlon Director at the house. Hope to see you June 1.

\r\nFROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
DEAR BROTHERS.
I hope you are all enjoying this edition of the FUlUGA. Now with one publication under my belt, I would like to thank those who wrote in
with support, recommendations and information. It has been very rewarding to come in contact with the graduates over the last quarter. I
still encourage you to become involved with this publication in order that I may better represent the graduate brothers in all aspects of Kap
pa Deuteron.
Here on the home front, I would like to report the success of Phi Gams in leadership positions and congratulate seniors who will be mov
ing on next year. On campus Phi Gams are seen as leaders in many organizations. In the recent Student Government elections. Will Cochran was reelected as SGA Senator. In University Council Elections, Chris Lee, Doug Perry and Wiil Cochran will represent the student
body and Kappa Deuteron. Bryant Sansbury, the chapter historian, was elected Secretary of the Interfraternlty Council. Four of our new
brothers have been involved in the Freshman Council including Alex Panos, John Riordan, Scott Self and FC Treasurer Brian Holiey.
Brothers Blake Bately, Doug Perry, Stan Merritt and Cartton Hamer all hold office on the University Business Council. Other Phi Gams are
involved in the Student Alumni Council, Georgia Recruitment Team, Biftad, and the Mortar Board. The leadership of these brothers shows
the influence and respect that FIJI has here at the University.
I am proud to report that many of our seniors are moving on to further their education in graduate school next year. Brothers Jon Adcock, Kevin Winders, and Dan Riley will be heading to the Medical College of Georgia next year. On the opposite end. Brothers Trey
Googe and Cale Conley will be moving on to law school here at UGA.
Another fine addition has been made here at Kappa Deuteron. There are now 23 additional young men that wear the Black Diamond
here at Kappa Deuteron. We expect great works from these new brothers and congratulate them on their accomplishment. We hope they
will come to reap all the benefits Phi Gamma Delta has to offer.
In closing, I would like to thank Graduate Brother Steve Fowler for his inspirational letter to the chapter on behalf of all the brothers. I
would also like to congratulate our Purple Legionnaire Dr. Jere Morehead on his success with the Law School's Moot Court team in the
National and International Competitions.
I hope to see you all here May 18 for Pig Dinner and the opportunity for the undergraduates to welcome everyone back to Athens. Hope
to hear from you soon!
