PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Brothers, | am pleased to have another opportunity to fill
you in on the current happenings at Rho Phi. As I stated in
the Fall issue, we have rededicated ourselves to the five values
of Phi Gamma Delta. We are continuing our efforts and are
having great success. Having recently initiated thirteen new
brothers, our motto is particularly fresh in our minds.
Friendship
We held our annual Purple Garter in Indianapolis on March
16 at the Hyatt Regency. Once again, P.G. was an excellent
evening filled with dinner and dancing. The following week,
we held our initiation ceremony and welcomed thirteen new
brothers into formal association with Phi Gamma Delta. A
few weeks later, we pledged three freshmen with a fourth one
soon to be added.
Coming up, we have our annual FlJI Isle on April 26 with
Road Rayle and the traditional post-road Rayle Party plann-
ed for the following day. For the first time, we are holding
a Founder’s Day dinner on May 1, in conjunction with the
lota Sigma chapter. We hope that the dinner will be the start
of increased involvment with our brothers at I.S.U. Also in
the future, we will be holding our annual Rho Phi Open golf
tournament on May 12. We hope to see a lot of graduates
back for this event.
Knowledge
I am proud to announce that our winter grades put us
above the all-men’s average for the second quarter in a row.
The brothers are diligently working to maintain this high level
of performance this spring. In the near future, we will be
holding our annual alcohol awareness seminar. At the
seminar, we will stress the responsible use of alcohol and the
fact that FlJI’s don’t let friends drink and drive. In the com-
ing year, we hope to have speakers come in to talk to us about
current risk management topics and other real world con-
cerns, such as, how to write good resumes and perfecting
interviewing skills
THE ROSE FIJI
The Rose Fiji is published twice a year by the Rho Phi Chapter
of Phi Gamma Delta at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology,
Terre Haute, Indiana. It is intended for the enjoyment of
graduate brothers, parents, friends, and Fijis everywhere.

Glory
Starting this year, we are giving special recognition to our
outstanding brothers by offering six new awards to be
presented every year at Pig Dinner. This year, our “Not For
College Days Alone Award”, went to Joe Weist (EE’87) for
his exemplary service to the Rho Phi chapter. In addition,
we gave out awards to five undergraduate brothers that ex-
emplified one of the five values in their endeavors. The win-
ners for this year were as follows:
Knowledge Lenny Muhlenkamp ME "93
Service Al Welch ME ’93
Friendship Chad Powers ME ’93
Morality Troy Dewar ME ’92
Excellence Rod West ME ’91
The Rho Phi chapter gained recognition at the international
level for our work in setting chapter goals. Our goals, the 150
Steps to Excellence, were featured in “The Friday Letter” and
in letters sent to all purple legionnaires and section chiefs.
Also, we are on schedule and should complete nearly all one
hundred and fifty steps by the time we hold elections next
December.
One final high point for the chapter was finding a new pur-
ple legionnaire (P.L.). Donn R. Gossom, Jerrod Potee’s
father, agreed to be P.L. for the next few years. Donn is a
°67 graduate from Zeta chapter at I.U. and is a juvenile court
judge here in Vigo County. We know that Donn will help
our chapter reach great heights and we welcome him into
our midst.
Recently we have had visits from members of the head-
quarters staff. Bob Baney, Director of Chapter Services, stop-
ped by when he was in town to give a ‘rush’ talk at the I.S.U.
chapter. Bob talked to me and Lenny Muhlenkamp about
our chapter and some possible ‘rush’ assistance for I.S.U. in
the Fall. Also, Tom D'Angelo, our Field Secretary, made his
second visit for the year. This is the first time in a number
of years that the field secretary has visited us twice in one
academic year. Tom's visit was extremely informal and he
took the opportunity to talk with most of the brothers. (In his
Fall visit, Tom was confined to a strict appointment schedule.) —
We appreciate all that the headquarters staff does for us and
welcome the opportunity to spend time with them. Rho Phi
welcomes any FIJI visitors and considers it a mark of favor
for a traveling brother to stay at our house for a while.
As you can see, we have been very busy since the last time
I wrote to you. I look forward to writing again in the Fall ‘91
issue. I am sure that I will have plenty to write about especially
with FIJI Academy being held this summer.
Perge!
Fraternally,
Steve Allison

Purple Garter
The 1991 Purple Garter was held at the Hyatt
Regency in Indianapolis on March 16. Thirty-
five undergraduates and one graduate ac-
companied with their dates, enjoyed an evening
of dining and. dancing..Hot hors d’oeuvre of
fried shrimp and mushrooms were served before
a buffet dinner of roast beef, ham, and BBQ
ribs. The traditional garter ceremony followed
the dinner. The dance was next with DJ, John
Lawron, from Terre Haute providing the music.
As always, everyone represented the fraternity
well, while still having a good time. The Hyatt
had no complaints for us. However, the people
at the Coors’ Convention below us, probably did
not appreciate some of our participation in their
activities.

\r\nwas a rewarding event with
several graduates having the opportunity to
renew old frienships. In attendance was
Rho Phi new Purple Legionnaire, Donn
Gossom. Also in attendance to perform the
traditional kissing of the pigs snout was Mr.
Bob Harker. While the “eating of the cherry”
was gracefully performed by the youngest
pledge, Dan Berzsenyi. The first annual
“Not for College Days Alone” award went
to Joe “Piecer” Weist, in recognition for all
of the assistance, advice, and service that
he provides the chapter. Thanks Joe! In
addition, a well deserved thanks goes to
the former graduate relations chairman,
Mark Glaser, for the outstanding job that
he did with Pig Dinner and graduate relations
itself. With the successful Pig Dinner during
March, the graduate relations committee and
the entire undergraduate chapter are eagerly
awaiting some exciting future plans.
scheduled for May
12, promises to be an amusing event for
both the competitive golfer, and the “I’ve
never played golf before” hacker. The es-
timated cost of the event is $32.00. Hope-
fully, the chapter will pick up part of the
bill!

\r\nSpring 1991
Next year at homecoming, several
things are already on the drawing board.
Of them class reunions for the graduating
FIJI classes of ‘71, ‘76, ‘81, and ‘86, are
being planned. Ideally, everyone from
these classes will take a time-out to enjoy a
weekend they will not regret. Also, the
possibility of a graduate sponsored rush
event has been brought up. Most likely,
this occasion will be an Indianapolis Ice
hockey game during October. If everything
goes as planned, graduates will attend,

course, to have a great time.

Rho Phi Initiates New Members
On Tuesday, March 16, 1991, thirteen
individuals made history. They became a
part of Phi Gamma Delta. The new in-
itiates went through 15 weeks of pledge-
ship, which consisted of fund raisers, social
service projects, house improvement pro-
jects, and an extensive Pledge Program lead
by junior Brian Sullivan. Brian held a
Pledge Retreat in Miram, IN. The weekend
consisted of the annual Active-Pledge foot-
ball game (the Actives lead the series 19-0),
a BCA meeting, and just a great time over-
all. Towards the end of their pledgeship,
Brian held the second Annual Brotherhood
weekend. This weekend was the “big
event” for the pledges. It consisted of
many workshops to enhance the pledges
knowledge and understanding of the
fraternity. Graduates Carl Gillman and
Bill Zindstaedt talked on getting a job and the
secret of goal setting, respectively.
The new pledge educator is Sophomore
Doug Sowder, and Brian took the reigns as
Rush Chairman. Pledges in the spring are
Mark Henke, Bob Bumpus, Dan McVae,
Chad Hurm and Aaron Bultman.
Congratulations go out to the following
new initiates, the Pledge Class of 1990:
Dan Berzsenyi Nate Brinkman
Stephen Cisco Luis Franco
dames Francois Mike Lawrence
Brad Miller James Muncy
Brady Neukam James Pipp
John Proctor Mark Rosenberger

Tennis
The Rose-Hulman tennis team had their best
season in years last year, after a rocky start,
they are again looking at a good record, with
the help of four Fijis. Team captain Eric Bers-
zenyi (ME 92) has had a rough year at #1 sin-
gles, but has led the team in fire and spirit at #1
doubles. Jonathon Drew (ME '93) has had some
luck near the end of the season, winning seven
of his last nine matches at #4 singles and #2
doubles. Stylin’ Luis Franco (CO 94) is getting
some good wins under his belt at #6 singles,
and has had some surprising success at #3 dou-
bles, teamed with Carl Cotter (EE "93), a last-
minute replacement for the first match of the
season, who stuck around to make varsity.
The team's high point came April 19-21 on a
weekend trip to Chicago. There they recorded
wins over Northeastern Illinois, Illinois Wes-
leyon, Illinois Benedictine, and Elmhurst, as well
as placing third on the Rockford College 8-team
tournament. Congratulations, guys, on another
fine season.
Jonathon Drew

Baseball
For the first time in several years, the Rose-
Hulman baseball team will have a winning
record. After flirting with the 0.500 mark all
last year and finishing 16-17, the engineers
opened with a 6-1 record on their Florida trip
and are currently 17-7 with ten games re-
maining. Fiji baseballers are Dave Gowans (ME
92) and Mark Rosenberger (ME ’94). With key
games coming up against Anderson, Taylor,
Franklin, and DePauw, Rose is 5-1 in ICAC play
and in good position to win its first ICAC title.

Phi Gams Dominate Track
Rho Phi has once again been a major force
this year in track. Four Phi Gams are on the var-
sity team and three place in the top 10 scores
on the team. Leading the way in the Pole Vault
and Javelin is junior Rick Briars. Two freshman,
Brady Neukarn and Jason Zigler have contrib-
uted to this year’s success, competing in the
middle distance events and hurdle events, re-
spectively. The top Fiji scorer for the year was
sophomore Doug Sowder, who leads the team
in the 100, long jump and triple jump. Con-
sidering the age of the four competitors, only
good things can come in the future. Be looking
for them in years to come!! Perge!!

Social Committee
The Social Committee has been working
steadily to keep the brothers “social” and
relaxed from the pressures that Rose-Hulman
delivers. While conforming to the new alcohol
policies, Rho Phi has been working to keep a
great social image on the Rose-Hulman and ISU
campuses.
Two formal dances, Black Diamond and Pur-
ple Garter, were a good time for everyone who
attended. Black Diamond, held at the Terre
Haute Holiday Inn, was the first formal event for
the fall pledge class. On March 16, Purple Gar-
ter was heid at the Hyatt Regency in downtown
Indianapolis. With over forty couples in at-
tendance, the spring formal was a Rho Phi suc-
cess.
Future plans for the social committee include
one of the biggest Fiji Isle's ever and a Road Ral-
ly planned by the new initiates. In the far future,
next year’s Purple Garter is planned for March
28 at French Lick Resort in French Lick, In-
diana. As always, all graduates and families are
invited for a great formal and a weekend of lei-
sure time activities.

Intramural Sports
Over the course of the past year, the Rose Phi
Gams participated in and enjoyed themselves in
thirteen intramural events. Thirteen Fijis were
on two separate major basketball teams, pulling
out records of 5-1 and 3-3. Seven Fijis played
on the minor basketball team ending with a
record of 3-3. The AA basketball team consisted
of ten Fijis and ended their play with a record of
2-4.
The major indoor and outdoor soccer teams
both had very successful seasons. Six Phi Gams
were on each team. The indoor team finished
with a 5-2 record while the outdoor team fin-
ished 4-1.
The major softball team ended with a 0.500
season of 2-2 with twenty Fiji's participating.
Fourteen Phi Gams participated in the fall AA
football team ending with a record of 2-4. The
volleyball team had ten participants and ended
their season 4-2.
The ultimate frisbee competition and the bowl-
ing competition each saw one Fiji participant.
Two intramural tournaments in tennis and bil-
liards were held. Carl Cotter (EE '93) took 2nd
place in the tennis competition and Jeff Geesa-
man (ME '93) won the pool tourney.
Currently, the Rose intramurals have Fijis par-
ticipating in major and minor basketball, major
soccer, major softball, spring football, and co-ed
volleyball.
