Many thanks to those giving $100.00 or more for "dues" or

THE BEAVER FIJI
''Not for College Days Alone'*
We have all read in recent publications about the various
crisis-level actions being taken at colleges and universities in
order to address (not solve) budget shortfalls and declining
enrollments. I am writing to address a problem that exists at the
KO Chapter. This fall, fewer students returned to live in the
chapter house than any time in recent memory (since 1976),
fewer men went through rush to pledge, and fewer were pledged.
As a result, the occupancy of the chapter stands at 44 — but
52 are necessary to make living costs competitive with other liv
Fall 1992
We are concentrating on scholarship this year. The environ
ment around the chapter house has quieted since school began,
and the pursuit of excellence is in the air. 1 encourage all graduate
brothers and their families to stop in Corvallis and visit the
chapter house. Remember — "Not for College Days Alone"! —

This has been a busy summer for the men of Phi Gamma

necessarily as we did in the 1991-92 fiscal year. The budget has
been very difficult to put together, but we ended up with the ap
proval of the house corporation and the undergraduate chapter.
As a result of these measures there will be no contribution from
the undergraduates to the building fiind this academic year. Fur
ther, the rent charged to live in was decreased to break even so
as to have the KO Association, in effect, subsidize this year. KO
Association will not have any money flowing to capital reserve
this year and that really creates a tenuous situation for those
alumni who serve on the KO Association Board.
To create the budget, I asked for help from Tom Jackson,
the new house corporation treasurer, and Mike Goger, the former
house corporation treasurer, who came in and helped us rework
the old budget. John Van Dinter, a customer service manager
for US Bank, gave up a day of his vacation to come to Corvallis
and put a cash disbursement journal on the house computer.
Ken St. Pierre, Paul Louis, Dan Porth, the aforementioned men,
and 1 discussed the billing system and a new housing contract
put together by Brian Jackson, an alumnus of the University of
We have always taken very much pride in the condition of
our chapter house. I foresee that without a concerted effort of
support from our alumni members, KO is in serious jeopardy
of survival with the occupancies we are currently experiencing.
The very best way we, as alums, can provide a helping hand is
financially. The time is NOW, and the need is great. If we can

1 thank the graduates for their help and look forward to a
great year for Phi Gamma Delta. 1 was lucky enough to go to
Ekklesia this year and discovered that the strongest Fiji chapters
in the country were the ones with the most graduate support.
This is not only monetarily — this is with advice and leadership
from graduates about how they dealt with similar situations when
they lived in the chapter house. — Brian Bruce, Treasurer
pledges.
Many of our alumni members have never given money, time,
or advice to further the success of Phi Gamma Delta at OSU.
Now — right now — we need financial support to insure the pros
perity of KO Chapter. Please consider a substantial contribution
dedicated to the building fund. 1 know that each of you has a
different situation financially, so 1 cannot comfortably make a
blanket request in regard to an amount each of you might give.
I only ask that you dig as deep as possible and contribute to the
Kappa Omicron Building Fund.
"Scram" Graham said in the Spring 1992 issue of The
Beaver Fiji,"The only gift that is too small is no gift at all!" Thank
you for your consideration and dedication to excellence for KO
Chapter. 1 trust you agree our commitment is "not for college
days alone." Fraternally — Mike Goger for KO Association

Work Week was once again productive. The basketball court
was painted, and a new backboard and two rims were installed.
The leftover Islander stage was made into a wood shed to store

Fiji Leads by Example
Tim Homecker,'78-957, exemplified the values of Phi Gam
ma Delta when his company. Easy Art of Eugene, Oregon, was
sold to an east coast company. The company moved to the east
coast, and all employees were offered jobs if they agreed to move.
One valued employee, Shelley Lancaster, told Hornecker she
could not move because of her spouse's job. Hornecker did not
feel that severance pay was enough for such a valuable employee,
so he did something to show his appreciation for her work.—
he took out a newspaper ad to find her a job. The ad said, in
part,"I have sold my business, and it is being moved back East.
This means that 1 am going to lose my most outstanding
employee, but my loss can be your gain. If you hire her, 1 will
pay up to her entire first month's salary."
leads to long debates in the living room during the cold months.
The ad was placed in the local paper and had excellent
Work Week also saw two new leather couches donated by our
results. Lancaster has received many offers for interviews, and
Hornecker has received many calls of praise from fellow
ever-active Mothers Club arrive. They are very comfortable and
enhance the beauty of our living room immensely. The yard was
thatched, and several rhododendrons that were in bad shape
were replaced with new ones along with assorted flowers.
Our thanks go out to the Kappa Omicron Association, which
had the piano refurbished and the carpets in all of the rooms
cleaned. Summer also saw the coming of new track lighting
above the dance floor. The class of'50 is working hard to raise
the money to refurbish the pool table, which is in dire need of
help. (It hasn't been resurfaced in three years.)
Rush didn't proceed as well as we would have liked, but we
managed to pledge 16 fine young men at the conclusion of Rush
Week, plus one more in the last few days. The lowest enrollment
in 25 years at OSU doesn't help any fraternity, and we are ac
tively looking for prospective rooks.
employers. Hornecker has always led by example. Alan Thayer,
Jr., '81-1002, said, *Tim was an upperclassman when 1 was a
freshman at Oregon State. He set an example for us all by his
leadership, character, and concern for all with whom he came
into contact."
Alumni Notes and Reminders
The next Pig Dinner date is scheduled for Sunday, April 25,
1993. The 145th anniversary of the founding ofPhi Gamma Delta
is May 1, 1993.
A reunion of the classes of the '40s and '39 will be held in
Corvallis on July 9,1993. Details will be coming from Bob Mor
rison, Jr., '43-302, and his committee.

Thank you, Oregon State Fijis!
As of October 15, 119 brothers and friends of the Kappa Omicron Chapter of Phi
Gannma Delta have contributed $6,066 via the 1992 alumni communications program.
Your donations make possible The Beaver Fiji newsletter and other alumni announce
ments.
Your support is desperately needed in other areas, as weflT. As Mike Goger of the
KO Association writes on page two, 'T foresee that without a concerted effort of sup
port from our alumni members, KO is in serious jeopardy of survival.... The very best
way we, as alums, can provide a helping hand is financially. The time is NOW and
the need is great." Mike urges all alumni to consider a contribution to the Building Fund.
Although financial contributions are always needed and sincerely appreciated. The
Beaver Fiji also needs your contributions of photographs, personal news for '*Fiji Fables,"
identifications, and suggestions. Dillane G. Schloth, 27-92, sent the photograph on
page three of this issue, but notes that he is not certain of all of the names. Perhaps
you could confirm or correct his identifications for the next issue.
Please keep in touch with the undergraduates, your pledge classmates, and other
alumni by supporting the Kappa Omicron alumni communications program. Your help
is greatly appreciated, so send your contributions today!
