THE
GOBBLER
FIJI
DEAR BROTHERS:
This is the final issue
of the FIJI GOBBLER for the
1983-84 school year.
I hope
that you have enjoyed the
previous two issues and that
you will enjoy this issue as
well.
This year has been one of
unexpected difficulties from
many
directions.
Despite
having what, on paper is an
outstanding Rush program, and
great effort by the Chapter,
we only initiated four new men
in the past year.
Our Rush
for Fall Quarter looks good
(we have seven men who say
they will pledge) but we have
learned not to be fooled by
appearances.
International
Headquarters has placed us on
"administrative probation" and
will offer us extensive help
with Rush in the Fall.
Our
goal is to pledge at least
fifteen men in Fall and Winter
Quarters.
Finances have been our
biggest problem, due largely
to our small numbers. Before
Pig Dinner our Treasurer, Pete
Cadra, had projected a DEFICIT
of $1665 at the end of the
Summer.
Generous
graduate
donations at Pig Dinner have
reduced, but not eliminated,
this impending problem.
This
issue
of
the
newsletter is financed TOTALLY
by graduate donations.
The
Brothers who returned for Pig
Dinner felt, and I agree, that
the GOBBLER is is essential in
our communications with you.
We felt that, unless we told
you the seriousness of the
situation in blunt terms, you
would not know that we need
help.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Even if you feel uneasy about
sending money to help with
normal
chapter
operations,
checks can be made payable to
"Rho Alpha House Corp." and
earmarked to help cover the
summer
mortgage
payments
($2000) or the fire insurance
($1000).
Remember, this is
YOUR
HOUSE.
We
greatly
appreciate your help.
\r\nSUMMER RUSH
NEW GRADUATES
Several Sununer Rush events are
currently being planned in the
Richmond and Northern Virginia
areas.
These
events
are
designed
to
allow
the
Graduates to introduce any
rising Freshmen or Sophomores
that
they
know
to
the
Brothers, and to provide a
chance for us all to get
together. One of these events
is a trip to King's Dominion
on Saturday, July 28, and a
party at Danny Kallick's house
the night before.
Further
information on all the Summer
Rush
activities
will
be
forthcoming in a letter from
Danny.

HOWARD "GROUCHO" CANADA is
still in Atlanta, GA, still
with Honeywell, still broke,
still married and hoping to
stay that way (married that
is).
Groucho's
wheels, a
Laser, are about all that's
new in his life.
DAVE
DVORAK has completed
Reactor Prototype with the
U.S. Navy and will complete
Sub School in July. In August
Dave will report to the USS
Tunny ("Bunny"), a "Special
Operations"
sub,
based
at
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
VIL VAITAS IS STILL UGLY. He
and Janet are kept busy with
work and fixing up their house
in Middletown, NJ.
HENRY KING and his wife Sue
are
still
living
in
Charleston, SC, still working
for the Naval Shipyard, still
writing
procedures
and
crawling
around
bilges
catching stray "zoomies", but
they DON'T work during Pig
Dinner. They say, "The WORST
part about being in Charleston
is our two kids (Amos & Paul)
who
keep
us
insane
and
unhappy... and drunk a lot."
[See Zawistowski, above.]
MIKE
RODNEY
is
Assistant
Engineer in the Thermophysical
Division of Mechanical and
Materials
Engineering
for
Southern Research Institute in
Birmingham, AL. His work is
on material components for the
Shuttle and MX ("Peacekeeper")
Programs. He claims that he's
being good and regretting it,
though it will soon change.
PAUL ZAWISTOWSKI is working on
the Nuclear Department of the
Naval Shipyard at Charleston,
SC.
He has helped write
refueling
instructions
for
subs, as well
as crawled
around in bilges looking for
stray radioactive particles.
He ',has
passed his
first
graduate course but decided
against a Master's right now.
According to Paul, "The best
part of being in Charleston is
that I have Henry & Sue & Amos
to keep me sane and happy. I
have 2 wives and 6 kids."
Paul had to leave Pig Dinner
early
and
hurry back
to
Charleston to sit up with a
sick
Nuke,
now
THAT'S
dedication.
GEORGE SAKELL and his wife Jan
are still fighting the good
fight, trying to remain true
Hokies
in
Charlottesville.
George teaches eighth grade in
Louisa County, and is on the
planning committee for the new
middle school. Jan works in
the Academic Computing Center
at [shudder] UVA.
They've
bought a townhouse and adopted
a kitty, and encourage anyone
in the area to stop by.
RICK COFFEY lives within sight
of 1-81 in Mint Springs, VA
(so there's no excuse for not
stopping by) and is an Account
Executive (i.e. Herb Tarlick
on 'WKRP') for WKDW, "the Best
Damn Country Radio Station in
the Shenandoah Valley!"
TOM MATACIA has formed his own
company, "Thomas Enterprises"
for
"Professional
Business
Development." We all wish Tom
every success in his endeavor.

WARD
FOLLETTE
has
a
3.3
overall
in
Chemical
Engineering
at
"Laff-a-lot"
(Lafayette) College and plans
to graduate in '86, only ten
years late. [See, Persistance
really does pay off. ] He
misses the Hokie environment a
lot.
BRIAN COLLINS works for Navy
Family Housing in Alexandria,
VA and mentioned something
about
the
Philippines for
three months. If I can make
make
out
his
handwriting
correctly, he says, "I am real
impressed
by
the
current
Brothers."
JOHN ADAMO and Sharon have a
house in Charlotte, NC. John
works for IBM and Sharon works
for the Health Department. He
says to come and visit [but we
got to him pretty late at Pig
Dinner and he could hardly
write.]
DEE TAYLOR was back for Pig
Dinner
this
year.
After
graduation Dee worked for the
Economic Development Agency at
the Department of Commerce.
He took a three month leave to
visit
Morocco,
Tunesia,
Algeria, and Greece, and then
left EDA
to complete his
Master's in Economics.
Dee
now works
for
a private
defense consulting
firm in
Falls Church [he's "on the
front lines of democracy!"] He
is
still
working
on
the
renovation of his DC townhouse
and dating
Bonnie
Steuart
["Who says you can't meet
anyone in bars?"]
RICHARD ESKELUND is still at
home working
for STSC
in
Rockville, MD as a Development
Programmer/Analyst. He still
plays a lot of Bridge, but
only has 11 masters points.
Richard
plans
to
marry
Kimberly Fry on August 3,
1985, after she graduates.
MIKE
"WALLYBARE"
WALTON
[honest, HE spelled it that
way] is working two jobs and
living with his parents (for
free).
We wonder about his
claim
that
he
can barely
afford his new motorcycle new
color TV,
and
"one-grandworth" of scuba equipment. He
works
for
First
American
Bank's Computer Department and
works part time as a scuba
diver.
If anyone asks, Mike
was sick on Friday, May 11,
1984.
STEVE JONES, 840512, is still
at Camp Lejeune, NC. He was
recently divorced, but still
occasionally sees his 2-year
old (of which he is very
proud.)
Steve's
recent
exploits
include
Granada,
Beirut, and still being alive.
He showed up in an '84 Pontiac
Fiero looking for an available
single woman. Only 16 years
left until retirement.
ROBBIE PHELPS is now stationed
about 20 miles from Frankfurt,
W. Germany with an Artillery
unit of the U.S. Army.
He
promises us that he'll send us
his
address
soon
so that
anyone who gets lost *on 1-81
and ends up in Europe can stop
by.

\r\nRICK GASS and Sally are still
married and still have no kids
("so all those betting on
three years lose big time!")
Rick is Project Engineer at
Diamond Shamrock Chemicals in
Wilmington, NC, plays on the
company bowling and softball
teams, and makes "nice $$$."
Sally is now working on her
tan and tennis game, but says,
"I could use any connections
to become one of the working
public.
We miss you Steve,
Cheryl, and Sandy!"
"NASTY" JONES is "still Nasty
and
damn
proud
of
it!"
Although he recently had a
little
disagreement
with
Virginia's Finest he made it
to "Pig Din-Din" and had two
[yes, 2!] dates. He is still
working in the U.S. Forest
Circus but "trying like hell
to get out," still playing
softball and coaching football
at Marion Senior High School,
and a member of the Adwolfe
Volunteer Fire Department.
In
typical Nasty form his message
to everyone is, "I want to see
the Grads get their asses in
gear for Homecoming ' 84 and
Pig Din-Din '85. We can do a
whole lot better Guys!"
