New Chi Mu Leaders
The spring semester is well under way with
a great deal of enthusiasm throughout XM.
Among some of the things that we are
extremely proud of is the newly selected
Executive Board. The new leaders are senior
President, Chris Barron, sophomore
Treasurer, Jeff Zidel, junior Recording
Secretary, Alan Hase, sophomore
Corresponding Secretary, Curt Sawyer, and
junior Historian Jim Fitts.
As President, Chris Barron would like to see
scholarship improve a great deal. Also, he
wants to see a better budget so that we will not
encounter anymore assessments. Barron wants
full participation from everybody such as
committee involvement to improve efficiency.
Treasurer Jeff Zidel has a very busy job
ahead of him. He does feel confident that
progress can be made with action. Jeff wants
to see reduced accounts receivable in the
House and to organize a more efficient
accounting system. Getting the house on the
right track as far as finances is not his only
goal. He feels chapter tone and more support
for all the brothers toward each other will
create an even better atmosphere at Chi Mu.
Alan Hase, who took over as House
Manager midway through last semester, feels
that House Manager and Recording Secretary
are two completely different jobs, but being
House Manager made him appreciate and take
more pride in the house’s appearance. He says
this pride has carried over to his new position.
His goals are for a successful rush and to keep
good order throughout Chi Mu.
Curt Sawyer, Corresponding Secretary, is
very excited about his new seat. He now sees
the House from a much more business
associated angle than ever. ‘It is a busy job”
commented Sawyer, but he is now organized
and hopes to keep in touch with National
Headquarters, as well as bordering state
chapters, such as Nebraska, to make
comparisons and improve on things.
r 8 Corresponding Secretary and Jim Fitts ‘87 Historian
Historian, Jim Fitts feels that being last
Pledge Trainer exposed him to
s of the Executive Board by
working with people and making out pledge
tests. He plans on keeping comprehensive
records by gathering diaries and scrapbooks of
all sorts.
The Executive Board, as a unit, is putting
stress on the committee system so that
everybody will be relied on to make Chi Mua
smoother running organization that we can all
be even more proud of.
CONGRATULATIONS! Executive
members, on positive attitudes and uplifting
enthusiasm.

Rush Report
Jeff Baker and Chris Hurt, the new Rush
Chairmen at Chi Mu, are putting forth their
best efforts for the 1986 Rush program. We
recently had a very successful Rush Weekend
at the House. Being one of the earliest Rush
Weekends on campus, we expected only 18
-20 guys. The Saturday evening produced
approximately 39 guys! Jeff and Chris felt it
was a productive weekend as they signed three
pledges for the fall ‘86 pledge class: Carl
Arnold, from Chesterfield, Darren Wagner
from St. Louis, and Jim Kinnard, from
Lawson, MO. They are expecting a pledge
class of 35 for the fall semester.
The next Rush Weekend is scheduled for
April 11 - 13. Fiji Island weekend, April 25
-27, will also be used as a Rush Weekend. Jeff
and Chris would also like to remind you that if
you have any names of prospective young Fijis
please submit them so that we can have a
successful Rush this next semester.

The Savitar
Frolics of Today
Each member of XM who strolls into our
library and gazes at the Savitar Frolics trophy,
bearing the victory of 1959, dreams of
winning The Greek Week competition this
year. Greek Week, or Savitar Frolics as it was
known years ago is an annual gathering of
fraternities and sororities who pair off for
games, picnics and many forms of
entertainment.
The theme of Greek Week this year is ‘tA.
Celebration of Friends,’’ and Chi Mu is doing
Greek Week with the Alpha Chi Omega
sorority. Fiji's hold many high-ranking offices
on the Greek Week committee. Greek Week
Chairman Dave Gerardi ‘87, stated, ‘‘we are
looking for a lot more involvement from the
House this year and we are trying to upgrade
the activities.’’ These activities include Greek
Night on the town, in which stores stay open
late and give discounts to the Greeks. Also
included are 3 nights of Fling competition in
which there are skits and dancing. There are
also a banquet and games planned. Along with
Gerardi, Sean Walsh ‘86 is in charge of
publicity and Jeff Zidel ‘88 is treasurer.
With the fun involved in Greek Week, there
are also fund raisers for needy causes. This
year Greek Week sponsored a Rock Alike
concert for Multiple Sclerosis, in which each
house puts up a candidate for lipsynching. Our
candidate, John Klaus ‘88 advanced to the
finals. We raised about $850 from our support
of him. Kevin Fritz ‘89

Scholarship Committee
Among the newly-appointed committee
heads is Scholarship Chairman - Dean Ellis
‘88. Brother Ellis, sophomore, with a 3.9
G.P.A. definitely has the credentials for his
new office, Dean's plans involve continuing
some old programs and developing a few new
ideas. Organizing and compiling the
scholarship Rush Book will be one of the
committee’s first priorities. Our greatly
expanded text files have been aiding in class
preparation. Dean plans to reorganize the
existing files along with increasing the size and
quality of the system. There will be an
increase with the addition of individual's
personal files.
Other plans include the establishment of a
“Study Buddy’’ program for the pledges. The
program would assign an active brother who
would be responsible for academic assistance
and counseling on a regular basis.
“The implementation of these and other’
programs will improve the general scholarship
tone around the House.’’ Chairman Dean

\r\nMARCH 1986
There is growing concern about the
consumption of alcohol nation wide and the
effects are evident here at U.M.C. The Greek
system is becoming more conscious of alcohol
and the liabilities involved.
Recent events have precipitated this concern.
Lambda Chi Alpha was sued this past fall
for $1.5 million in wrongful death suit. A
rushee was killed driving back to St. Louis
after he had been drinking at their Rush party.
Alpha Tau Omega was placed on probation by
their national fraternity, after hosting a party
at a Holiday Inn in St. Louis New Year's Eve.
Damages from the party were estimated at
$40,000.
FIJI MISSOURIAN
President's Message
In a state where the drinking age is 21, it
seems that U.M.C. and the Interfraternity
Council are behind the times. A task force has
been formed by I.F.C. consisting of several
fraternity presidents. Nothing has come from
this, but a greater awareness of the problem is
being raised. Chi Mu is trying to reduce its
liability at Rush parties. Alternate beverages
and food are offered. Each brother in the
House is assigned a rushee to host. He is
ultimately responsible for making sure that the
rushee does not drive.

Message From the Purple Legionnaire
I'd like for us all to reflect for a few moments on something we from Chi Mu consider to be an
institution, namely, ‘‘hell week.’’ The focus of my comments will be upon the purpose behind it
and some recent changes which have helped make the week conform more closely to that pur-
pose.
With the leadership of Tim Burke ‘88, as Pledge Trainer, the brothers of Chi Mu provided
their pledge class with the best week of preparation for membership that I have yet seen at our
Chapter. As many of us will remember, hell week was once a time of numerous purposes. Em-
phasis was previously on testing the unity and devotion for the pledge class, getting the House
cleaned thoroughly one last time, entertainment for the actives and sometimes lastly, the role of
the pledge class in the future of the Chapter. While we all have good memories of hell weeks
past, the week of 1986 had one theme only, improving XM.
To begin with, the name has been officially changed from ‘‘hell week’’ to ‘‘Delta week.’”
Why? Because the only justification for hell week at all is for the good of ‘‘Delta’’ and the name
of the week itself should allow for no mistake about that fact.
Secondly, Delta week now requires that every activity must meet the strict test of being com-
pletely for the good of the fraternity. You may ask, is the week still challenging? Are meaningful
rituals still used? Do we teach respect? Is it fun? The answer in each case is yes, and in most
respects the themes of the old ‘hell week”’ are stronger than ever. The reason I can say that is
because all planning for Delta week centers around the single purpose of bettering the Chapter as
a whole. Before completing Delta week, this year’s pledge class underwent traiing in leadership,
house finances, the committee system and yes, the usual strong dose of fraternity history.
The only things missing are probably the least important of all. If all a brother remembers of
“shell week’’ revolves around hazing, that week was a true waste of everybody’s time.
Is the new Delta week any better than its predecessor? Some brothers will probably never think
so. However, if anybody took a close and objective look around their Chapter House, I think the
answer would become clearly yes. Graduates attending the 1986 Pig Dinner noticed the change
in Chi Mu. Those who attend Chapter and see a room filled to capacity notice the change. Those
people from outside who come into contact with the Chapter notice the change. When I go to
chapter meetings and hear the brothers talk of pride, achievement, unity and the “‘electricity””
felt by the whole House, I notice the change.
Along with the old hell week, so went many of the feelings of division and animosity which
weakened our Chapter. I can’t help but feel that the change has left Chi Mu stronger, more
unified and more proud of itself. Brothers, come by and share in the greatest asset we have, the
chapter tone at Chi Mu.
Fraternally,
Michael Bery

Board of Chapter
Advisors Forming
at XM
We are organizing to give the under-
graduates the sage advice that Old Salts should
have. John Shwartz, Tom Grey, Rick
Halderman, and Tom Tunnicliffe have signed
on and we hope more of you will join us.
One of our important goals is to raise
chapter scholarship. The one thing that all who
come to Mizzou and Chi Mu have in common
is that they are here for an education. We hope
to bring an environment for study
accompanied by whatever help we can
provide.
Another hope is to temper the use of
alcohol. The Missouri campus has a major
alcohol problem. We cannot solve it
ourselves, but we can be part of the solution.
IFC has made the first move toward a dry
tush. We hope to move the University along,
too. The Chi Mu Fijis as well as the Greek
community needs to learn that they have a lot
more to offer people than a good party.
This chapter has a lot to offer, it is made up
of a lot of really great guys. What the BCA
needs to do is see that they have the guidance
to become the best chapter, not on the campus,
but in Fijiland. Join us.

Letter to Graduates
Dear Graduates,
This letter is to inform you of a few things
the Graduate Relations Committee has planned
for next year.
First of all, we are planning pledge class
reunions for each of MIZZOU’s home football
games next season. We will be contacting
pledge classes in groups of four from the
mid-1950's to last year’s graduates. Over the
summer, you will be contacted by me and by
someone in your own pledge class who is ac-
ting as your class representative.
Secondly, invitations for your Norris Pig
Dinner will be mailed out in November to
make planning schedules easier. A secondary
invitation will be sent in February as a
reminder. If you have any thoughts or sugges-
tions of ideas for next year’s Pig Dinner,
please contact me. I would like to hear what
you want done.
Sincerely,
Paul Vogel ’89

John XM ‘87.
Leo funded our study room and the
lights in both the study room and the
basement. ‘‘When we did the lights for
the study room we just decided to do the
whole basement,”’ he told us. He
reminded us that Bill Springer ‘84 had the
idea for creating the study room. Leo
made the study desks out of old doors.
He commented that our House is 36
years old. He understands the need of the
replacement of the House’s showers and
windows. Leo also believes the upstairs
social section needs more lighting. He
has an idea to extend copper from the
fireplace to the ceiling and form a light in
the shape of our badge.
When asked about any changes he
noticed, he told us all the booths that lined
the basement were gone. He also told us
that we need house boys, because he felt
when he was at XM they were an asset.
He recalled a story about a house boy
named Gerard. ‘Gerard was employed
with us for 25 years. He was knifed to
death after a disagreeing card game one
night.””
When asked what he would like to say
to the graduate brothers he responded
with ‘‘I just want to tell them to keep
coming back to Pig Dinner and the House
and make reacquaintances. This will
strengthen the relationship between the
active chapter and the graduate
brothers."*

Fiji brothers are attentive as Bill Martin speaks at the 1986 Tri-Section Convention.
XM Hosts
1986 Convention
The weekend of January 31 -February 2
proved to be a busy one at Chi Mu as we
hosted the 1986 Midwest Regional Tri-Section
Convention.
With over 100 Phi Gams in attendance from
schools such as the Universities of Kansas
Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Oklahoma
State, Kansas State, William Jewell and
Westminster, the convention was a big
success, according to Andy Slusher, ‘86
organizer of the weekend.
The main convention was held at the Alumni
Center and included such things as
presentations on our Chapter’s model pledge
education, scholarship, and rush programs,
which other chapters can adopt for use at their
chapters. A special presentation on alcohol
awareness was presented by Mike Berry ‘81
and focused on liability laws concerning
alcohol serving and consumption in each of the
states represented at the convention.
A special guest for the weekend was Bill
Martin, (Mississippi St., *75) the newly
appointed Executive Director of the
International Fraternity. According to Martin,
this section convention was one of the largest
he had ever attended.
The weekend also included a social function
Friday night, and formal dinner for all
delegates to the convention on Saturday
evening.
It’s still undetermined where next year's
convention will be, but, we are proud to say, it
will take a lot to rival the quality of the one
held at Chi Mu this year.

New Brothers at Chi Mu
The Chi Mu chapter in Columbia has added
to its strength with the initiation of 18 new
members. The new initiates are extremely
excited about being official members of the
House. Their thoughts on improvement are
vast.
The most important element to all the new
members is improvement in the House G.P.A.
They all think that XM has great potential, and
that settling for average grades just won’t do.
Everyone is working hard for themselves and
the House.
The new Fijis are also striving for more
participation in intramurals. Chi Mu has many
outstanding athletes, and if there is full
participation, we can win.
Another goal of the brothers is a successful
Rush. They are looking for well-rounded
individuals with good attitudes towards
scholastic achievement.
Many of the new brothers have already
taken House improvement in their own hands
by taking on committee-head positions. Paul
Vogel, (Bolling Green), who was the fall
semester’s number one pledge by receiving a
3.6, has assumed the duty of seeing to it that
cups and awards requirements are given to the
committee chairmen. Paul is also active as the
head of the Graduate Relations committee.
Jason Pottenger, (Joplin), who’s 3.4 earned
him the position of pledge number two, is in
charge of special events, such as inviting guest
speakers to Wednesday night formal dinners.
The number three pledge, with a 3.3, Jeff
Kennedy, (Poplar Bluff), is heavily involved
as a Missouri Student Association Senator. Jon
Sansone, (St. Joseph), who was the number
four pledge, with a 3.2, is whole heartedly in
charge of your FIJI Missourian, and as you
can see, is handling the job quite well. Jim
Millan, (Bolling Green), was the number five
pledge with a 3.0. Millan, who is a legacy to
Phi Gamma Delta, (his father, James Millan
‘53) is managing the job of House
Photographer. Other committee heads are
Terry Bro, (St. Louis), as Intramurals
Chairman, Jay Wilkerson, (Lee’s Summit), is
Co-Chairman of FIJI Island, Chris Brand,
(Red Bud, IL), is Assistant Social Chairman,
Brad Tucker, (Rolla), is Philanthropy
Chairman, and Tim Swafford, (St. Joseph), is
in charge of the Little Sister committee.
Congratulations to all the new brothers. The
FIJI Missourian wishes you all the best in
achieving your goals! Andy Sidwell

Intramural Update
Phi Gamma Delta showed some real talent
in Intramural Basketball for the ‘86 season.
The team got off to a great start with 3
impressive wins over Sigma Pi, Pi Kappa Phi,
and Alpha Gamma Sigma, which came by way
of a 31-0 shutout. In the first round of the
playoffs, the team faced Delta Upsilon. The
iji's played a tough and exciting game,
carrying the lead throughout the first half of
play, but the DU’s fought back and took a last
second 34-33 victory.
Some of the upcoming intramural events are
soccer, wrestling, and track, which will be in
later issues.

The Beautiful
New Basement
The basement which was last remodeled in
1970 was looking a little shabby after 15
years. Many graduate brothers and families
saw our deteriorating basement on football
weekends. Now Chi Mu, with the help of our
House Corporation, has taken on a new and
even more impressive look by remodeling the
basement.
The remodeling actually began two
summers ago when Leo Eickoff *54 donated a
new ceiling and ceiling lights. He also
furnished our Study Room which serves our
brothers well.
Recently, we removed the old paneling and
replaced it with lighter cedar paneling. Our tile
floor, which was cracked in many areas was
replaced with a lustrous new tile. These two
improvements totaled over $3,500. Now, once
again we can hold our social exchanges in the
basement. This will save the wear and tear on
our dining room.
Our Mothers Club is considering new
additions to our basement such as a television,
blinds, and new furniture.
Our basement should be completely
remodeled within the next two years. We are
willing to wait a little longer in order to get a
quality basement that will last another 15
years.
