THE OPENING WORD
AsI was preparing this edition, I became rather
intrigued with the question,"Why don't more
guys come to the Pig?". This led me to write a
long comment that 1 felt was too lengthy to start this
issue. Unfortunately for you, the reader, 1 did include it
at the end as my FINAL WORD.
1 hope you enjoy this effort.
again, the pre-eminent fraternity at Western. Now, we
are strong in numbers, finances and administration,
and we boast one of the best houses on campus.
Moreover, what is the same is the respect for the
individual and the unity of the brotherhood.

The following are excerpts from the book. Time to

Boston, The Riverside Press, Cambridge, 1951. This was
kindly submitted by John Curtis in his research of
fraternity history.
"In my time at Wittenberg College we had four

we were rich with the spirit of friendship and

"What do these Greek letters mean?" For there hadn't
been any fraternities at Wittenberg in his time.
This spirit was clear to me upon my arrival and it was
this sense of belonging that drew me to Phi Gamma
Delta. The highlight of my time as an active brother
came when 1 was awarded the David Glen Fraser Award
at the Pig Dinner in 1985. In a private ceremony,
Michael Hagarty and Greg Stoddart passed to me David
Glen's International recognition pin.
1 had suffered the loss of my father the previous winter
and, although many of the brothers did not know of
this, they and the fraternity played a major role in
enabling me to deal with my grief.
Now, I am as close as ever to the brotherhood at
Lambda Omega. The mid-eighties were an exciting
time for fraternities and especially our chapter. During
our time, a new foundation was laid for what is, once

PIG DINNER HAPPENINGS
The 27th Annual Lambda Omega Norris Pig
Dinner was held on Saturday, February 4, 1995.
Here are a few of the comments overheard
during the day and festivities "Here's my money. Where's the beer?"
Alex Wittenberg
'What dinner?'
Stan Morantz
"After 1 finish this pop (beer), it's Chivas time!"
Lynn Campbell
" You mean we get dinner after these buns? Oh good,
someone's tossing another one over to eat!'

1 must insert a correction and apology to the list
published in the November, 1994 issue. James M.
Higgins was listed as being the pastor of St. Anne's
Church in St. Thomas. Letters encouraging his
attendance and participation were sent. 1 was advised
by Bill Szego after the publication of that edition of
the Chain that, in fact, James McCaig Higgins

These testimonials confirm the fun had by all. Part of
the program involved our guest speaker, Gordon
Elliott, former Archon and present President of the
Canadian Educational Foundation, judging the bun
throwing part of the program. After a howitzer shot
tumbled a glass of water onto Korlan Buxton's plate of
food and a few grenade shots plopped onto other
selected brothers' plates, Gord adjudged the fun to be
\r\nover. The alternative was no speech. After some
thought and deliberation over the choices, the
brothers opted for words rather than yeasty turds.
Undergrad, Houtan Rafii, was our Master of
Ceremonies. He also ran the raffle for Fiji hockey
sweaters and Islander shirts. Stan Morantz had taken
the original picture of the charter members of the
chapter, had it refurbished (if that's what you call it for
a picture) and donated the new copy to the house.
Matt Dunn gave a moving tribute to the memory of
Jonathan Ritchie, who passed away in 1994.
Our guest speaker, Gord Elliott, spoke about the
Canadian Educational Foundation and how tax-
deductible donations can assist the house for
improvements, mortgage reduction and scholarships
for the undergrads. Bud Mangels gave greetings from
Lexington and echoed Cord's appeal for funds.
The high excitement of the evening was provided by
two events. First of all, Frank Smeenk raised $3,000
for the house for a new computer through ten $300
Educational Foundation donations from - Lynn
Campbell, Stan Morantz, Shawn Gilhuly, Barry
Mees, Murray Coulter, John Nicholson, Steve Good,
Peter Hockin, Frank Smeenk and Mike Lawrance.
The second piece of drama was the auction of the pig's
head by Lynn Campbell and Bob McCulloch.(1
understand much of the money donated was out of
fear of the knife Brother McCulloch had in his sock!)
The final tally, after many competing bids, was $1,487
as well as $1.40 in Canadian Tire money. This was not
only a new record but it absolutely amazed and
impressed our guests from other chapters. It is also the
beginning of a war chest to fix the house with
products from the Tire.
As our regular pig carver. Rick Fellman, was not in
attendance, Stan Morantz prevailed upon (read forced), Peter Hockin, to assist chef Peter from the
Ramada to cut up our porker. Barry Mees donated a
gypsum-carved white owl to the chapter to be kept at
all times in the chapter room, only to be brought out
Bud Mangels, Executive Director of the U.S. and
Canadian Educational Foundations, was also in
attendance at the dinner. The Foundation held a day
long Eastern Canada meeting during the day. In
attendance at the meeting and at the Pig were Norm
Dundas (McGill), Ron Glen (Calgary), Bob Boothby
(Toronto, also our Section Head), and Western Ontario
representatives Frank Smeenk,John Chandler,John
Starzynski and Bob McCulloch (hybrid with Toronto)
and Foundation President, Gordon Elliott (UBC).
All in all, a good time was had by all. The list of this
year's grad attendees for any of you who are interested
follows. There is no particular order and I apologize to
any brothers whose names are omitted. This list is a
reproduction of the sign-in sheet so, if you did not sign

years on the House Corporation as well as acting as a
graduate adviser to the boys at 627. He wants everyone
to know that we are NOT welcome to ever again go to
the cottage his mother once owned in Leith, Ontario
to find out if Tom Thompson is really buried in the
cemetery across the street. He also does not want Steve
Brett to configure those cast-iron lawn ornaments into
weird sexual positions. Tim Day is requested to also
use someone else's toilet, (if you really want to know,
ask Don or Tim. Tim, leave the stick at home). He is

The lads coasted through the first class and then took a
holiday from the course until a cold morning in
November. Their fortuitous attendance was the day of
the mid-term test. The professor was quite concerned
as to who these guys were who appeared in this rather
smallish class of 25 to 30 people. Tim pointed out that
they usually sat at the back and often moved around
so that the prof probably did not notice them.
However, they had to write the test for which they had
not prepared. So, they answered the economics
questions and ignored the geography questions.

required two classes, one mid-term, no essays, no
hooks and no studying to complete.
