7 FRATERNITY ROW GETS A FACELIFT
By Warren A. Smith (1962), House Corporation President
Since taking our house
back from the Tau Kappa Epsilon
Fraternity this summer, your
House Corporation has been busy
turning the place back into something the Fijis can be proud of, and
slowly but surely the old house is
looking like a place we can call
home again!
The effort kicked off with a
solid month of heavy-duty cleaning, clearing, painting and polishing by an outstanding group of Fiji
men. An estimated 800 man-hours
of work were put in by eight summer session B tenants, who earned
themselves free rent for the period,
and the remainder of the Fiji undergrads in town who contributed
through scheduled work parties. A
dedicated group of graduate brothers
(Ed Kellar, Bill Valentine, Peter Aliberti and Jeff Greenert, among others)
provided guidance and direction, and
what the undergraduates couldn’t
handle, the house corporation contracted.
Renovation literally covered
from top (roof) to bottom (basement)
and all in between, but with special
emphasis on the living room and
foyer, although even the rec room
and dining room received new coats
of paint. New tables and additional
chairs were added to the dining
room. The powder room was
painted and redecorated as well.
The entire front and back
yards were reclaimed, and the roof
cleared of leaves and debris and
roof drain leaks were sealed. Drywall holes and moisture damage
was repaired. All rooms were emptied and cleaned, and the entire
facility except the kitchen got a
massive deep cleaning, including

For those of you who were
fortunate enough to make it to Pig

to be a reunion to remember. As
most of you are aware, Fiji is back
in our digs at 7 Fraternity Row and
this year’s Pig Dinner is to be a
celebration extraordinaire. So
pack your bags, grab your golf

going to be fantastic!

held the FIRST weekend in Febru-
ary, February 6 - 7. The Friday
night pre-Pig festivities will be
held at the University Hilton located at 1714 SW 34th Street starting at 7:00PM until ???. As usual,

LETTER FROM THE CHAPTER PRESIDENT
By Andrew Nelson (2011), Chapter President
Brothers,
The Upsilon Phi Chapter
recently elected a new cabinet for
the upcoming calendar year.
To the office of Historian,
Peter Martin (’10) was elected and
is very excited about being a strong
voice on cabinet. Peter is a junior
member of pledge class Gamma who
is very involved with the chapter
and is passionate about our Ritual.
To the office of Corresponding Secretary, the chapter elected
Tim Rankin (’11). Tim is a sophomore member of pledge class Delta
who plays on our soccer team and is
ready to work hard with our social
committee to have a great upcoming
calendar.
Our new Recording Secretary is Corey Clawson (’11). Corey is
a sophomore member of pledge class
Gamma and is our recent Grad Relations chair and is very motivated
in keeping this Chapter headed in
the right direction.
Treasurer for the upcoming
year is Ryan Issa (’11). Ryan, or Big
Dog, is also a sophomore member of
pledge class Gamma. Ryan is excited about making sure our budget
stays in order and that dues and
other bills are dealt with accordingly.
Lastly, I, Andrew Nelson
will be the new President. I am a
sophomore member of pledge class
Gamma and I am from Tampa,
Florida. I ran for president because
Upsilon Phi has been one of the
most important things in my life
since I came to college. I want nothing more than to see it grow and
flourish on the University of Florida
campus like it once had and like I
know it can. I am thrilled about the
upcoming year and I am ready for
all the challenges that come with
the position.
I look forward to seeing you
all at Pig Dinner this year and for
tailgates in the fall of 2009.

upstairs carpet cleaning. All of the
interior walls downstairs, stairwells, and the upstairs hallway
were spackled and repainted. Terrazzo floors were cleaned and polished. A new tile floor was laid in
the entryway/foyer, and doors
trimmed and painted. Several trees,
that threatened serious roof damage
should a hurricane come along,
were removed or pruned. Electrical
circuitry, thermostats and some
lighting fixtures were updated to
help with the power bill. The wireless system was re-configured from
TKE to Fiji and a router replaced.
The old house manager’s
apartment was gutted and completely remodeled to accommodate
our new house mom, Dottie Trotter.
Walls were plastered and painted
and a new electrical subpanel
added. A new kitchen was built
with cabinets by brother Chris
Buffington(’83), including new modern appliances. Finally, new carpeting and kitchen/bath floor tile was
added throughout and the corroded
bath fixtures and toilet/sink were
replaced. Dottie now feels right at
home and is really starting to get
involved in her management role
working with the men of Upsilon
Phi.
The front façade was repaired and painted, and new
Greeks, “Phi Gamma Delta” and
Fiji lettering installed, and even the
sidewalk and building roof trim repainted. The entrance double doors
are royal purple again! The front
living room entrance was widened
to its near original size for much
improved impact and eye appeal,
and Gamma’s cabinet perch moved
to a new place of honor in the front
anteroom.
Lastly, the House Corporation purchased almost $25,000
worth of new furniture for the living
room, powder room and entryway/
foyer. Everything here was coordinated by Pete Aliberti (’70) and
Bruce Bradburn (’71), who are professionals in the furniture industry.
Other brothers in business have
also stepped up with advice and
other assistance including Chris
Buffington (front foyer and mail
room additional new paneling, and

dining room breakfast cabinetry)
and Nelson Green (’68) (tile). When
you talk to them, make sure to say
“thanks for helping out.”
UF OSFA visitors and the
fire marshall have highly praised
the end result and commented that
having seen the house “before” the
summer B session, they did not
think we could pull it off before
rush.
We have invested a total of
about $60-70,000 over the past four
months, much of it thanks to your
contributions. We still have a ways
to go, but we have a full house of 23
men (plus another 33 not in the
house), who are really exemplifying
the spirit of Phi Gamma Delta now
that they have a fraternity house to
help them shine! Graduates have a
standing invitation to visit anytime.
There are always a few burgers on
the grill on game days and these
men are hungry to meet brothers
from the “real world.” Any of you
who may have already visited the
house this fall can attest to how
beautiful everything looks!

HOTEL ROOMS: There are
a block of rooms reserved at the
University Hilton (352-371-3600)

Hilton was chosen for this year’s
event due primarily to its proximity
to the fraternity house, as well as
its first class accommodations. If
you would like to book your room at
the Hilton, you can click on or enter
the link http://www.hilton.com/en/
hi/groups/personalized/GVNCCHFPGD-20090206/index.jhtml or you

over the country who are making
the pilgrimage. Don’t miss it! Feel

WELCOME PLEDGES!
Pledge Class Epsilon is the newest addition to the Upsilon Phi Chapter of
Phi Gamma Delta. PCE has 15 members
which will ultimately contribute to the
prestige of this fraternity.

detailed information can be found about
each of them below.
Pledge Class Epsilon prides itself
in the fact that, based on word of mouth, it
is not the best pledge class thus far. However, the amount of potential present
within PCE is overwhelming. PCE can
bring this Fraternity to new levels both on
the social, moral and brotherly level. Only
the future can tell what will become of Phi
Gamma Delta.

PHASE II PLANS AND NEEDS
By Ed Kellar(1971), Vice President - House Corporation
As the second Cabinet transitions into house leadership, we
have been taking stock of what else
the facility needs, and the desires of
the brothers for facility usage. Some
of these items are things deferred
from the initial work due to time or
cost, and some are impending maintenance items (always a list to be
prioritized), while others are true
capital improvements for building
on our assets.
Besides Rec room junk furniture replacement, the kitchen presents current needs even while we
have meals catered. These include
several (used) refrigerators and
freezers to allow better storage for
events, and condiments, leftovers or
late plates (lots of night classes
these days we never had in the
past). In addition, the walls all need
cleaning/paint, and there currently
is no operating HVAC. The courtyard grills are decrepit at best and
get used a lot – a new stainless BBQ
is badly needed.
Possible future expenditures numerous possible projects,
including additional security lighting front cameras/alarms, exterior
house painting, fire stairs welding
repairs, some additional roof maintenance, soffit replacement along
the south side, upstairs carpet replacement (or possible different
flooring altogether), additional thermostat replacements, sprinkler system expansion and repair, basement
demolition of old systems to create
possible storage, laundry or exercise
room facilities, connection to UF
Internet systems, additional bathroom and laundry room maintenance with some replacements, back
yard renovations to include bigger
and better secure storage, fencing,
improved drainage, and maybe even
some decking or flagstone patio additions.
