SHIVELY NAMED STUDENT TRUSTEE
by Rick Nicholson '79
Leslie “Moms” Shively, 21, a
senior majoring in accounting, was
sworn in as a member of the Indiana
University Board of Trustees at its
regular meeting held on the Indiana-
polis campus January 17. The oath
of office was administered by presi-
dent Donald C. Danielson
Les is one of five students ap-
pointed to the board of trustees at
Indiana's five state-supported uni-
versities and colleges. His term ex-
pires July 1, 1977.
Les is a 1972 graduate of Harrison
High School, Evansville, and winner
of the Chamber of Commerce Distin-
guished High School Graduate
award. “Moms” served as past presi-
dent of the Intrafraternity Council
at |.U. in 1974-1975. Other activities
on the Bloomington Campus include
membership on the Health Center
Student Advisory Board; |.U. Student
Foundation and 1.U.S.A. senate. For
two summers Les was an intern in
the Department of Metropolitan De-
velopment in Evansville. He also
served as assistant to the controller
in the office of American Dairy Co.
in Evansville. 3
With all of his obvious activities,
Les still manages to become in-
volved in many house functions. We
here at Beechwood are very proud of
Les and wish him succss in his role
as Student Trustee.
MOM’S WEEKEND 1976
by Sanford Kunkel '78
“Happy Valentines Day” is the
key to this year's Mom's Weekend.
Following an excellent weekend last
year, the house enthusiasm is at a
peak for this year's weekend. The
formal weekend plans begin Saturday
noon with a “football weekend” type
of lunch. At 4:00 p.m., FlJl moms and
sons will see Brother Jimmy Crews
of Indiana and Illinois clash in an ex-
citing Big Ten basketball confronta-
tion. Later in the evening, moms and
sons will dine in the elegant sur-
roundings of The Fireside Inn, featur-
ing a buffet dinner and their famous
salad bar. Following the dinner, Zeta
and hopefully the women of the
Delta Gamma sorority will be waiting
in hopes of a victory celebration for
this year's production of I.U. Sing
Sunday morning features a film
from the Indiana Student Founda-
tion, followed by picture taking, and
concluding with a formal brunch. The
remainder of the day can be used for
browsing in shops or sightseeing
on |.U.’s beautiful campus. Alll in all,
the weekend looks to be one of the
finest for Zeta in the year of '76.
We might even get the mothers
out for a little serenade late Saturday
night... You bet we will
FIJIS AGAIN SEEK IM TITLE
by Andy Light '77
During the last eight years, Phi
Gamma Delta and Sigma Nu have
divided the Intramural Sports Cham-
pionship evenly between themselves.
Strangely enough neither fraternity
has won back to back titles during
this time span. This year, however,
the trend could easily be broken as
the Fijis have “carried on” their
winning ways of last year in grabbing
a fifty point spread over their near-
est competitor, none other than
Sigma Nu.
Just like the previous races, the
Fijis’ strong points have been good
talent plus the essential elements of
any real winner, teamwork and pride.
These combined factors were no bet-
ter illustrated than in the Phi Gamma
Delta “C” football team. Even though
the intramural chairmen strive for
well-balanced teams within the house,
the “C” squad surprised everyone ex-
cept themselves by grabbing the in-
tramurals' version of the Super Bowl,
the All-Campus Championship. The
“C” team was led by rifle armed
Jimmy Crews and a troop of sure
handed senior receivers in the per-
sons of Mark Laesch, Bob Lugen-
bill, and Kurt Snouffer.
While the football achievements
were the highlight of the first semes-
ter, again it was competitive partici-
pation in every sport that put the Fijis
at the top of the standings. Beech-
wood picked up a valuable first place
finish in diving when junior Charlie
Turk and freshman Mark Sidebottom
finished one-two in the Crimson di-
vision. Coupled with league titles in
B and Pledge volleyball and second
place showings in golf, cross-country
and swimming, these heroics are
proof that the Fijis are a threat to
&
ff
Les Shively
take the top spot in any sport
A forecasting glimpse to the sec-
ond semester sports is encouraging
due to the fact that Beechwood
basketball squads are vastly superior
to last year's Fiji teams. Likewise, the
house's waterpolo team has al-
ready been magnificent in splashing
its way to a second place showing in
waterpolo.
On the management level, Bill
Sibbit, experienced co-chairman of
IM's for the Fijis, has stepped from
his post and John Wieselthier has
been elected to fill his position. Spe-
cial congratulations go to “Sibby,”
who for three semesters put in top
quality work for the Fijis. Sibby's
excellent administrative work not
only for the house, but also for, the
IU intramural program as well, serves
as ample proof that when it comes to
IM's, the Fijis are leaders both on
and off the field.
