Chapter House Looking Good
The Mu Iota chapter house
underwent many improvements over
this last summer making it one of the
nicest houses on campus. Mark
Bradbury '82, Brian ShuU'84 and Doug
Crawford '84, along with several other
made financing for these improve
ments possible.
However these improvements were
only
the
first
of
many
new
improvements slated for the house. As
this issue is being written AKE is
brothers who lived in the Moscow area
constructing a new laundry room in
over the summer, spent many of their
spare hours working on the house.
Some of the major work included
hell. The purpose for this new laundry
painting the dining and living rooms,
painting the crest and other emblems
over the University entrance; new
carpet, couches and ceiling for the
recreation room; new chairs and tables
for the dining room, the re-groutting of
the floors and the painting of both
bathrooms in the new section, and 20
new mattresses for the racks. We
would like to offer our thanks to Mark,
Brian and Doug for the work they did
on the house and to the Graduate
Brothers for their contributions that
room is so the house can meet fire
codes, and to have added space to
meet the laundry needs of 61 people.
Other items that need immediate
attention are the roofs on both the new
and old sections (we're springing new
showers daily), the fire alarm system
(we're currently going by word of
mouth),the electrical system in the old
section is faulty and we have had
problems with the plumbing
throughout the whole house.
Hopefully we will be able to take care of
all these things before next school
AKE Fund Drive Success, But It's Not Over Yet
AKE is back on top with a five figure
balance, which will be used as pledged to make
600 University Ave. more energy efficient. We
extend our appreciation to the brothers that
are helping to make this possible. Along with
the new improvements last summer, plans are
now being made to replace the roof on the new
section and to insulate the old section. We
have finally started to move forward.
Much more is needed, however. Thermo
pane windows must be installed, but there
aren't enough funds at the present to make this
project possible. As inflation rises, these
projects become of greater and greater
concern and must be dealt with immediately if
we are to make it through these tight times.
These energy efficient projects will help to
bring down the ever increasing costs.
We appreciate all of the time that Larry
Haluorson, Mike Greer, Paul Tobin, and
Malcolm Renfrew give to keep AKE going, but
we must remember that the Fraternity is not
for college days alone. Any time given is always
greatly appreciated.
\r\n1982 The Year of The Islander
The islander is here once again for another weekend of
Fiji excitement. The date is April 23-25, 1982. Many things
are in store for the exotic weekend. Beginning with Friday,
movies, beer and fireworks will be the highlight of the
evening. This will lead into a champagne breakfast on
Saturday. That afternoon we will head out to Brown's
Meadows, but will return by 6 p.m. in time for the famous Fiji
island dinner. At 9 p.m. the band will begin(we are looking
at several bands out of Seattle)and will lead us into the early
hours of the morning.
The menu for the weekend includes: 100 lbs. of king crab,
120 lbs. of roasted pork, 50 lbs. of smoked salmon, shish
kabobs, assorted salads, Pekingese chicken, exotic fruits
and melons, and Fiji renowned Honaruba.
Of course, the decorations and island dress will set the
mood of the whole weekend. We are looking forward to the
highlight of the year and hope that you can be there to
celebrate it with us.
Pig Dinner Scheduled
The 1982 Norris Pig Dinner is scheduled for Saturday,
February 20th. We are looking forward to the best pigger
that Mu Iota has ever had.
Our guest speaker this year, RoUie Cook, is our Section
Chief and also a member of the Parliament of Alberta,
Canada.
Saturday, full of activities, includes an AKE meeting in the
morning and a social hour in the afternoon before and after
dinner. That evening a basketball game is scheduled
between Idaho and Montana State. On this note. Playboy
Magazine has rated Idaho number one in the Big Sky this
year. Attending graduate brothers, will not be disappointed
with the performance of this year's Vandal hoopsters.
This year's pigger will mark the 25th anniversary for the
class of'57 and will mark the golden 50th anniversary for the
class of '32.
The brothers of Mu Iota are looking forward to seeing the
graduate brothers at the 1982 Norris Pig Dinner.
Do any of these faces look familiar to you? If you
recognize any of the persons in the pictures
appearing in this issue drop us a line and let us know
who it is, and be sure to include the story behind the
picture. If you don't recognize the pictures, but have a
story about the house you'd like to share with us be
sure to write it down and send it to us, or come by the
house and tell us in person we'd love to meet more of
the graduate brothers. Also,if anybody knows how to
replace the lead glass windows in the inner-temple,
please write and tell us how it is done.

Merle Gilson '25
Of the more than one thousand Mu Iota brothers, none
have brought more happiness and joy into the hearts of
America then brother Merle Gilson.
Merle started working at Walt Disney Studios in 1929 and
was the first artist that Mr. Disney hired. He started out as
an animator's assistant at Disney. While the animator's
would draw the key poses of a cartoon the assistants would
draw all of the in-between poses. During his two year stay at
Disney Merle drew all of the in-betweens for Mickey Mouse,
including the first Mickey Mouse cartoon Steam Boat Willy.
In 1931 Ubbe "ub"Iwerks, the creator of Mickey Mouse,
opened his own studio and offered Merle a job. He worked
for Iwerks for six years until the studio was taken over by
MGM. Merle then went to work for producers Hugh
Harman and Rudolf Ising and worked on the cartoon"Tom
and Jerry." Over the years Merle has worked for many
producers and studios, and on differnt cartoon characters,
like Woody Woodpecker and Bugs Bunny.
Merle attended last springs pig dinner at the chapter
house and presented the brothers with an oil painting of
Mickey Mouse that he had painted and with a picutre of the
staff of Walt Disney Studio's back in 1929. Merle was also
the center of many conversations as he told the brothers of
his experiences in the house during the early twenties, and
of his works as an animator. We would like to thank Merle
for sharing his experiences with us and for helping to create
our favorite cartoon characters.
This is the group photo that brother Gilson presented to the chapter. It was taken in 1929 and pictures the entire
Disney staff. Merle Gilson is front row center and Walt Disney is front row, far right end.
