NORRIS PIG DINNER
Past Presldent Art Schultz (ME '81), Historian Richard
H. "Doc" Crowder (DePauw '31), Dean Don Mlghell
(Texas '56), Rltuallst Blll Mlller (lU '62), Presldent Frank
Gavrilos (ME '821, Treasurer Brlan Michel (CHE '821, and
Section Chief Pete King (lU '76) (1. to r.) at thls year's
Norris Pig Dinner.
The annual Norris Pig Dinner was held March 1s
and came off with typical Fiji flair. Early in the
evening 32 graduate brothers gathered at the house
for a few stories. After Happy Hour everyone headed
to the Sheraton lnn for more festivities.
First came the "Bringing in of the Pig" by the
Pledge class. After the pledges and all others who
had not paid their respects to the pig did so,
youngest pledge Chris Johnston (ME '84) paid his
respects to the pig. The honor of kissing the pig's
snout went to our guest speaker, Fraternity Historian
Richard H. "Doc" Crowder (DePauw '31). The Exile's
Toast was given by Andy Gavrilos (EE 'Bo), who did
a good iob (for a Greek from "da Region").
After dinner, Frank H. Gavrilos (ME 'B2l gave the
President's Report. Treasurer Brian Michel (CHE 'Bzl
SPR:NG 1981
cleverly allowed Bill Gibson (ME 'T4l to give the
House Gorp. Report. The Scholarship awards were
given by Chairman Tim Brown (ME-CE '82). Mike
Schipper (CE '82) had the most improved G.P.A., was
the runner-up for the highest cumulative G.P.A., and
was awarded a $100 scholarship by the phi Gamma
Delta Educational Foundation. Highest cumulative
honors for the pledges was shared by Ron Bender
(EE '84) and steve Proffitt (EE '84)- with perfect
averages. Highest cumulative G.P.A. for an active
was Damon Ground (cH E '82). The sophomore
winner of the Educational Foundation Scholarship
was Kent Eaton (M E '83).
The material for Brother Growder's speech came
from the diary of Brothers John T. McCarty and
John Conrad's trip to California during the Gold
Rush. The diary covered the period from March to
December 1849 and gave insight to the personalities,
thoughts and impressions of the young travellers as
they made the trip west. From the entries, it seemed
the men gained more of an appreciation for life.
Brother Crowder's humorous interpretation of the
diary made his talk enjoyable.
After the meal, the house was again the scene
of more reminiscing and socializing until the wee
hours of the morning. Those who dared to go to bed
before 2:30 a.m. were reminded that wasn't the thing
to do by the Fiii Rock'n' Roll, Bluegrass, Dixieland,
Rhythm and Blues, Pots and Pans Marching Bandl
All in all, the graduate and undergraduate had a
great evening of fraternity brotherhood.

while the brothers themselves have been busy,
the BcA and'the House corporation have been quite
active as well. At the Pig Dinner Meeting, the restructuring of both organizalions was completed,
unveiling a well-defined structure for both, complete
with guidelines to follow for future reference. Also,
an "lnvestment Advisory Committee" was established for our benefit; a round of clicks goes to
Dean Don M ighell (Texas '50), Dr. Frank Guthrie
(Hanover '50), and Purple Legionnaire Dave Myers
(cE '75). Both the BCA and House Corporation boast
seme new faces, ir"lcluding their respective leaders.
They are: House corporation-steve Smith (EE '14),
President; Bob Harker (lowa State '43), Treasurer;
Michael cherbak (EE '75), secretary. BCA-purple

in Devoesque attire. Graduate brother Tom Roetker
(ME '80) once again drove and Field secretary Brian
Dunster (British Columbia '80) proved to be a back
seat inspiration and authority on Road Ralleyes.
Once again, an ingbnious team won the first

Thousands of celebrities have been reserving rooms

(ME '83), Kevin Fagan (ME '83), Jeff Moore (ME '93),
Kirk shafer (EE '83) and Pete wats@n (ME '93) consumed the most petrol during the Ralleye.
Not every team fared so well{ The Rock would
have made it to the first checkpoint, but they were
apprehended by the state police outside the peni-
\r\ntentiary. They decided to go to the picnic, byt the
car died outside Rose.
The party at the.house capped _off'a great day.
Everyone had a good t!ffie, and we hope that we can
see you next year testing the back roads of beautiful

1981 GREFK GAMES
The Greek Games were held on April 26. Although
Rho Phi did not place as well as usual, w€ showed
everyone our Fiji protherhood.
The day proceeded smoothly under the direction
of Brother Bruce Fleck (EE '82l.To help relieve the
tension of the past,.years, the bicycle race was replaced by an obstacle course designed by Steve
Nowak (ME '83) and Alan Yarcusko (EE '83). A iellosnarf ing contest was also added to help relieve
tension. Also, Rose's newest fraternity, Delta Sigma
Phi, ioined in the competition.
After collecting a fourth place in almost every
event, w€ finished the day fourth overall, behind
perennial champion LXA, SN, and ATO. Upholding
Phi Gamma Delta's reputation as the singing fraternity, Rho Phi's rendition of a medley from "The
Music Man" earned a first in the songfest competition. Director Bill Johnson (ME '82). with the assistance of Bruce Fleck, did an excellent iob of readying
us for the competition.
The day was capped off with a gathering of many
fellow Greeks at the house (which lasted early into
the morning). Everyone was pleased with the friendly
atmosphere of the games and hopes the future
games will be as successful.

SPORTS
The past quarter has been very interesting in
both varsity and intramural athletics.
The Rose Varsity basketball team made the Division lll playoffs but lost their first game to Savannah
.State in Savannah, Georgia. Don Patton (CE '82),
Keith Kemp (CH '84), and Scott Williams (EE '84) all
saw considerable action, and the three should see
considerable action next year.
The varsity baseball team has played ball around
the.500 rnark. Four Phi Gams are on the team and
see action. They are Perry Stephens (M E '82), Steve
Nowak (ME '83), Ron Bender (EE '821 and Brent
Mewhinney (M E '821. Unfortunately, early in the
season Steve sustained a knee iniury which required
surgery. Steve plans to be back in plenty of time for
next season.
The track team is having a terrific season. They
have won'almost every dual meet, finished second
at Little State, and have an excellent shot at winning
the conference this year. The four Phi Gams have
run extremely well this year. They are Howard
Menser (ME'82), Mike Schipper (CE'82\, Tom
Redford (ME-CE '83), and Mike O'Brien (EE '83). Mike
Schipper sustained an ankle injury and missed
about two weeks, but hopefully he will be ready for
conf erence.
The world of intramural softball hasn't changed
much for Rho Phi. Fiii Maior, Geke and Meat all continue to lose at a steady pace. Meat Squad fans will
be disappointed to learn that they won their first
game ever.

GRADUATE NEWS
Graduate contact here at Rho Phi has been very
good during this past quarter. Especially noticable
has been the graduate class of 1980, with at least
one of them around for any party or activity. Earlier
Rho Phi grads have also been keeping in touch
through various forms of correspondence, relating
great tales of high adventure and epic heroism.
Here's a few of the things they've been up to:
Tom Burtzlaff '79 and Rick Cahill '79 spent three
weeks traveling around Europe and while in Germany manbged to visit Lt. John Burkey '79 and his
wife, Stacey. Stacey, incidentally, is expecting a little
cadet in November.
Steve Wilson '80 and his wife Michelle have
passed the expecting stage and are now the proud
parents of a little girl, Karisa.
Arwin Roe '78 is doing consulting work for the
gasohol industry, and his wife Diane passed her bar
exam and will soon be an Assistant States Attorney.
Robert "Bobo" Froetscher '80 and Roe East '80
are presently serving the fraternity in the roles of
Pledge Educators for the new Fiii Delta Coloney at
Bradley University.
Speaking of Roe, he, along with other '80 grads
Paul Rupprecht, Andy Gavrilos, and Tim McGrath,
have all announced plans to be married at various
times within the next year.
Brother Ron Andrews '74 recalled an old bet of
his with the chapter and sent us $30.00 to help
"refresh" ourselves after our songfest victory this
year. Thanks, Ron ! !
Also giving the chapter some help was the father
of Brother Steve Goble '71. He was able to get us a
good deal on a new couch and set of chairs. The furniture was a needed and much appreciated addition
to the house.
And finally, in an appropriate closing note,
Brother Nate Edwards '78 has decided to give up the
glamour and nightlife associated with pig-farming in
the greater metropolitan Terre Haute area. He will be
working for an off-shore drilling company about 80
miles west of New Orleans.

PUBLIC RELATIONS
The spring term here at the Rho Phi has been a
very successful one in the area of Public Relations;
The Third Annual Fiji lnvitational Track Meet was a
huge success with over 140 Terre Haute fourth
graders participating and nearly $400 being raised
for Special olympics. As in the past, we are also
lending our aid to Designer Showcase, Multiple
Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, and the Blood Drive.
\r\nRounding out the spring activities
for thg p.R.
committee, Parents' Weekend and having professors

computing facitities at' Rose-Hulman. /
Delta Sigma Phi, Rose's seventh social fraternity,
is scheduled to'receive its charter in the near f uture.
It's having problems finding a house, though. For a
while it appeared that thg Delta Sigs would live five
houses south of the FlJl house, but that effort was
thwarted by Mayor Pete Chalos' veto of an ordinance
permitting them to do so.
Finally, the Board of Managers will meet soon,
and is expected to approve a resolution to admit
women to Rose-Hulman, beginning with the 1982-83
school year. Recent surveys of the student body
show'support for this proposal. Obviously, this will
be updated as needed!
