the outgoing performance of the Third Generation
SOCIAL
Under the able if not phenomenal leadership of John
Fike, '82, the Spring '81 social calendar has been a full
one.
The semester began with the traditional Champagne
Party to celebrate our Second Anniversary on Fraternity
Hill and to welcome our newly initiated Brothers. In
Phi Gam fashion, the party was the latest in class, with
Hoot Club who dates back to the remnants of Nebulous
and the Spacekings. The Chi Omegas spared no expense
in costumes, and the infamous Izgadmee Punch made
an encore performance at the bar. Once again, AGTWHB(those who survived!).
After catching our breath, we started gearing up for
the Party of Parties—Fiji Island.
Bound to outdo previous Fiji Islands (and yes.

of the t-shirts, extra entertainment, and changes in the
Next in line was the Black Diamond Formal, held on
ce again in the Jazz City itself. New Orleans. The
beautiful Fairmont Hotel, in all its splendor, was the
layout of the yard.
Entertainment was provided on Friday night by a
our favorite band from Nashville, Black Widow. After
Bluegrass Band (including Brother Curtis Bivens, '83)
and on Saturday afternoon by Alan Hartlein, who
played acoustic guitar and sang Jimmy Buffet and
a weekend full of French Quarter spirits, and a few tat
toos to boot, we returned to Starkville in anticipation of
James Taylor to the laid-back afternoon crowd.
Oysters on-the-halfshell were consumed throughout
location of our gala gathering featuring none other than
our next social event.
The wait was a short one, as the Delta Gammas prep-
ped for a gathering with the Men in Purple. Many
graduates will remember the first swaps in 1977—and
many of us will remember the first of a new form of par
ty—mixers. The Delta Gammas came over late in the
afternoon to enjoy two kegs and 150 hamburgers,
cooked under the slightly bedazzled supervision of
Hayes Johnson,'82 and Mark McDonald,'82.
On the Thursday night before Spring Holidays, we
had our first party with the ladies of Kappa Kappa
Gamma since the historic First Swap. This was another
mixer, this time held in W. L. Currie's Restaurant after
hours. The ladies were great, and so was the music.
We returned from Spring Holidays in high spirits
looking towards our first full-fledged swap of the year.
We made a return to the Ag Center on Hwy. 25 to en
tertain the Tri-Deltas, where we had our Fantasy Swap
the afternoon hours leading up to our Islanders' Feast,
and consumption of mega-quantities of shrimp, cornon-the-cob, potatoes, and Cajun French bread began at
6:30.
Our band for the night was the Jacksonians, eight
screaming cubs from Jackson, Tenn. who carried us in
to the wee-hours with a lot of Soul and a little Beach
Music to make the weekend complete.
AGTWHB (everyone within hearing distance of the
Phi Gam House!)
With the completion of Fiji Island Weekend, the
Brothers of Sigma Mu have settled back into the preexam lull, but already look forward to Fall '82 when we
expect to follow-up Rush with some more great parties.

Not to be outdone by our stellar performances earlier

In retrospect, the social semester has done some fan
tastic things for Phi Gamma Delta through meeting
RUSH
people (especially the four sororities that graced our
parties) and public relations.
Tune in next semester for an update on Jimmy Chur
ch, our Homecoming Band, and all the things we can
possibly devise at Sigma Mu to entertain ourselves.
SPORTS
The intramural program at Sigma Mu saw some sur
prising results in the Spring '81 events, as our basketball
team, led by Perry Cliburn '81 made their way to the
Quarter-Finals of All-School Playoffs. An old nemesis-the Kappa Sigs—cut our hopes at a miraculous season
at that point, but looking back, we have to say "Un
believable!" to the fact that they survived into the Top
Eight of well over 100 teams on campus.
Our lower teams didn't fare as well, but had many
good times, nevertheless. The Jerks, lowest of the low,
retained their perfect record for the second consecutive
.season, and despite Mike Anderson '83 making a halfcourt hookshot, could not manage to win a game. The
Jerks look to next year with an 0-12 lifetime record.
The Chijis made their first appearance in Co-Rec
basketball, a team composed of Fijis and Chi Omegas.
Rush preparations for fall semester are under way.
Jerry Fuller, our new rush chairman is in need of names
for his rush list. This summer promises to be a very
busy, exciting time for rush with four parties planned
throughout the state. Our first party will be held in
Jackson, MS on June 27. Max Bowman will be in
charge and if any questions arise, he can be contacted at
Drawer FN, Mississippi State. On July 11, the second
party will be at Inverness, MS at Polk Vanzant's
(Swanee)Plantation. Frank Melton will be available for
information concerning this party at Rt. 2 Tutwiler, MS
33963. Robert Sledge is heading up the third party
which will be held at Lake Whittington. Robert can be
contacted at Box 68 Sunflower, MS 38778 to answer
any questions. The site of the last party is Columbus.
Walter Lindsey is coordinating this one and is available
at 2020 Pinoak Dr., Starkville, MS (323-5104).
The extensive rush program can only be a success with
your's and my cooperation. Jerry Fuller is ready to
assist you with any questions you may have, and is also
open to any suggestions you may have concerning rush
by calling (501)829-2373 or writing Rt. 1 Box 151 Mar
vel, AR 72366.
They made a run at the championship, but miffed when
one of the ladies, known as the Franchise, got sunbur
ned. Maybe next year!
Softball season was begun with great expectations af
ter the additions of such players as Perry Cliburn and
Frankie Allison '84, and the first game matched the Fiji
Bunch against Sigma Chi No. 1. The Macho Boys
couldn't walk away with it, but won anyway in a close
one 4-2. The second game saw the Bunch settle an old
grudge as they destroyed Kappa Sigma 10-1.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Running into troubled waters for a while, they drop
ped two before returning to the winner's column with a
14-4 blitz of TKE.
Barely making the IFC Playoffs, they lost 11-9 to the
SAE's in the first round.
To end the season, the Bunch pounded a couple teams
in All-School before whiffing themselves into a 1-0 loss.
Brother Don Zecha '81 gets the Boxcar Wille Award
Community Service, being one of the five areas
stressed by the Sigma Mu chapter, has kept the brotheis
very busy this past semester. Thanks to David York (81)
many projects were organized. One of the first projects
was helping a First Baptist Church shut-in, Mrs. Cohern
for his devasting strikeout, and Brother Max Bowman
pick up trash around her house. As February rolled
around, Valentines were distributed by the brothers to
senior citizens of the Starkville Manor Nursing Home.
'82 gets the Dud Award for his rocket that misfired
The annual Heart Fund Drive was held in March. Once
from time to time.
Looking ahead, we anticipate a rematch with Kappa
Sig Orange Crush in football next fall, along with the
return to stardom of our volleyball team and various
other events, hopefully to include the Fiji Wormburner
Classic.
.The Pledge-Active Football Game will once again be
dominated by the actives, and we encourage any and all
graduates to attend as referees to insure our dignity.
again the men of Phi Gamma Delta collected the most
money in this fund raising event. During Brotherhood
Weekend we picked up trash on Highway 25 for a few
hours on that Saturday morning. We also participated
in a Easter Egg Hunt for the children of the Black Head
Start. The brothers also took part in Starkville's War
on Ugliness to clean up the community. Although the
projects consisted of much work, it was the most rewar
ding things our chapter did this past semester.

The Spring of 1977 was the first time that the chapter
had any swaps. The first swap was with the KKG's and
the second was with the DCs. The social calendar and
the entire semester will always be fond memories in the
minds of those who participated.
