Demolition Is Complete and
Construction to Begin Soon
Dollars Still Needed to Ensure Project Success
D
ue to the generous support of our brothers and friends, the Texas Fiji, Not for College
Days Alone campaign has begun the demolition and construction preparation phase with
construction set to begin in early April. To date, we have raised $4,321,480 from only 269 Texas
Fiji alumni. Help us increase participation significantly to reach our goal of $5.5 million and
secure the financial and long-term integrity Buen Retiro deserves.
Texas FIJI Landscape Changing
Buen Fiesta and Zivley House were demolished and their former sites are ready for construction.
This is an exciting time for Texas Fiji and we’re looking forward to seeing the progress. We will
keep showing you photos of the progress as we go. Construction is to begin in early April. Here
is a recap of the expansion project so far:
• July 2012: Site Development Drawings submitted to City of Austin
• Nov. 2012: Austin City Council grants permission to demolish Brown Zivley House
• Dec. 2012: Construction Documents completed by a great team led by Overland Partners,
i.e. Tim Blonkvist PC ’75, and the project is being managed by Kent Collins PC ’75
of Centro Development
• Dec. 2012-Jan. 2013: Demolition of Brown Zivley House and Buen Fiesta
• January 2013: Building Permit Applications and the Construction Documents
submitted for Plan Review to City of Austin
• April 2013: Construction set to begin
Project Essential for Success
Several fraternities at UT have completed renovations or have built new additions. Chapters that
were not our competitors have now risen in status through this process. This project is important
from a competition standpoint, but also to benefit to our brotherhood. We will be able to have
an entire pledge class and officers living together and a facility that protects Buen Retiro and
ensures Texas Fiji is around for many more generations.
Continued Support Needed
We want to make sure Texas Fiji stays strong. We know that you want to see this as well. Though
we’ve started demolition and are about to start construction, we must reach our fundraising goal.
This goal will allow us to pay for the entire project, build a maintenance fund to ensure the house
is well maintained in the future, and empower the undergraduate Chapter with the tools they
need to be successful. We urge you to make a pledge to Texas Fiji. Please show your support
of this project and help rebuild your Texas Fiji home. If you can send your first payment with
your pledge, it would be very helpful to our overall finances and our construction this spring.
We would like to see our overall participation really grow, and I hope you’ll get on board with
this campaign. Please do what you can to close the gap to our goal and raise our participation
so that we can ensure the future of Texas Fiji.
With Buen Fiesta gone, construction
on the new house is set to begin in early April.
Continued help from loyal graduates has made
this project a reality. Your support is still
necessary to secure the future of Texas Fiji.
Fraternally,
Campaign Chairmen

BCA Enhances
Chapter Relations
through Graduate
Involvement
T
his year marks Tau Deuteron’s 130th
anniversary. Our Fraternity and UT share
the same founding date: 1883. What a testament
to the character each member has displayed in
keeping our rich heritage intact. Knowing that
we are still the top fraternity at UT, and remain
stronger than ever, is something that should
make all Fijis proud.
The Board of Chapter Advisors (BCA) has
been busy advising the Chapter on such things
as pledge education, finance, rituals, and
philanthropy. We have made great strides in
these areas due to the active involvement of
the 18 board members. DeWitt Waltmon Jr.
PC ’76, chairman of graduate relations, has
focused on making our newsletter better than
ever. Robert Canon PC ’72 is again chairing
the Pig Dinner on April 13, and has substantially
increased participation.
In the fall, we continued our tradition of
having tailgate parties before each home game.
The feedback continues to be very positive,
motivating several pledge classes to hold
reunions and make the tailgate parties part of
their weekend.
The Chapter has an active social schedule for
the spring semester. Parties such as Marshalls,
Studio 54, Round-Up, and Parents’ Weekend
on April 5-6 highlight the calendar. The rush
captains are creating their list and will invite
potential candidates to these parties and other
spring and summer recruitment events. If you
know of a potential rushee, please e-mail me
and I will forward their information to the rush
captains. We all know how important it is to
have the best candidates on our list.
Our graduates continue to show their loyalty
by contributing to the capital campaign and
recruitment account, participating in the
BCA and Pig Dinner, and attending tailgate
parties. Your participation is strengthening our
brotherhood and friendships.

Texas Fiji Plans
Recruiting Events
for Spring and Summer
T
he Texas Fiji rush team has been hard at work putting together events for
the spring semester, as well as the summer recruitment period. We invited
rushees to the first major parties of the year, Fiji Marshalls, on February 15, and
our largest party of the semester, a 1970s Studio 54-themed party, on February 22.
Our next major event is Round-Up Weekend, March 21-23, and we hope to show
many of the visiting high school seniors a good time at our famous Ivory P. Huff
Low Hoop basketball tournament. During Round-Up Weekend, we also plan on
hosting several events at Buen Retiro, and on Saturday we’ll host a crawfish boil.
Throughout the summer we will entertain rushees during campus orientation, and
we plan on having many events scheduled on these dates as well.
Our annual New Orleans recruitment trip is scheduled for the weekend of June
28-30, and we plan on having numerous events for the rushees who make the trip.
Our third annual recruitment trip to the YO Ranch in Kerrville will take place July
20, and rushees will be treated to an exotic wildlife bus tour.
We will close out July with our world-famous Texas Fiji Island party on July
27, where we will once again transform Buen Retiro into a beachfront mansion,
surrounded by sandy beaches with live music on the porch. Austin State Party,
the traditional end of the summer recruitment season, falls on August 6, and we
will have an unforgettable Late Night party at Buen Retiro planned for those who
have recently accepted their bids to become Texas Fijis.

H
A Bright Future in Store at Buen Retiro
Undergraduates Maintain Success in Recruitment, Leadership, and Philanthropy
G
reetings from Buen Retiro. I am happy to
report all is well as we embark on 130 years
as a Chapter. An impressive anniversary for an
impressive institution—six snaps all around.
Construction Forces
Tau Deuteron to Get Creative
The first months of 2013 have already been
memorable, and it’s appropriate that we begin this
milestone year with a clean slate in our backyard.
The Buen Fiesta “back house” is finally gone, as
is the old Zivley study house. With construction
set to begin in April, the actives have started to
acquaint themselves with the latest developments
in the house expansion project. The construction
phase will certainly keep us busy as we try to
come up with alternative and innovative ways to
host parties, park cars, and conduct pledgeship.
This is no small task, but I am certain the actives
are up for the challenge.
Successful Recruitment
of New Pledge Class
On that note, we are proud to announce the
newest members of the 2012 pledge class.
In December, we initiated new members in a
ceremony attended by numerous graduates. Each
new Fiji completed their pledgeship, and we are
happy to welcome them into our brotherhood.
With the end of another pledgeship, we turn our
focus to the lifeblood of our great Fraternity:
recruitment.
Thank You, Loyal Alumni
The rush captains for 2013 are Nelson Grimes
PC ’11, Spence Howden PC ’11, Chase
Russo PC ’11, Carter Thurmond PC ’11,
and Dillon West PC ’11. We hope you are
able to meet these gentlemen as they travel
across the state for the recruitment fundraisers
in late May. Thank you to all alumni for your
continued support, guidance, and involvement
during the recruitment process. Your backing
of our efforts is what made us so successful in
years past, and Tau Deuteron owes you a debt
of gratitude.
Leadership Possibilities
at Fiji Academy
During winter break, John Paul Ackels PC ’11,
Lyles Carter PC ’11, and Harrison Duncan
PC ’11 had the opportunity to attend the annual
Fiji Academy in St. Louis. The Academy offers
seminars with Fijis from all over the country and
educated our members on chapter operations,
rituals, and leadership.
Intramurals and Philanthropy
Remain Strong
The 2009 pledge class intramural football team
won the Greek League championship once
again this year. Philanthropically, the Chapter
completed over 1,000 hours of community
service in the fall.
As always, it was great to see many different
eras of Fijis together at the house for football
tailgates in the fall. While spring doesn’t offer
as many chances for us to be together, the
annual Pig Dinner will be hosted at Buen Retiro
on April 13. The event chairmen have already
been in contact with Robert Canon PC ’72,
who has graciously offered to help us host this
great event. Graduates are always
welcome at the house. We hope to
see you all there!
