PRESIDENT REVIEWS RECENT CHANGES
Brothers,
Here at Pi Chapter, we have always
prided ourselves on being a front- ยท
runner among fraternities in the area
of philanthropy. Last year was no
exception.
We have once again led the way in
our civil service efforts with our annual haunted house that supports
Greenhouse, a shelter for battered
women. Aside from the haunted house
we hold a yearly picnic with Big
Brothers and Big Sisters of Meadville
and participate in Walk America and
many other service events, such as lipsync contests and buffalo wing sales.
These and other philanthropy projects
have helped our interfraternity council win the social service award at the
Northeastern IFC Conference.
Along with philanthropy we have
also led the way in interfraternity relations. We have initiated a mixer with
the Theta Chi Fraternity to help them
with their membership difficulties.
This joint party helped them to take in
three new pledges immediately afterward. Also our Jefferson Duo party
with Phi Kappa Psi is making a strong
comeback.
Athletically we had nine starter for
the Gator football team in 1992. Two
of these were named to various AllAmerica teams. We have a wrestler
who just reached the 100-win plateau
last season and we have a starting
pitcher for the baseball team.
In addition to all of this we have

House Improvements
Once again our house has undergone a dramatic facelift. The second
floor bathroom has been completely
remodeled. It looks sharp!
In addition, both stairwells were retreaded and reinforced for added
strength and stability, as well as the
railings being mended and given a
fresh coat of shellac.
These improvements not only make
the chapter house more functional and
up-to-date, they give it a much needed
cosmetic boost as well.
This year, we are happy to note that
the basement is finally being attended
to. Brother Charles Geiselhart '94 is
in charge of the pledge class's project
of renovating the downstairs. Everyone is excited about the possibility of
breathing new life into an old relic. In
addition to infernal renovations, we at
Pi Chapter also took to external measures as well.
Last spring the volleyball court was
given a new look. With purple net
posts, new professional net, and 20
tons of sand, many Phi Garns could be
found here blowing off a little steam
throughout the year.
We at Pi Chapter feel we are in a
transition. Our chapter house is coming together well and returning to the
glorious state it once enjoyed. Come
and support our growth.

Philanthropy Still a Priority
The end of October 1992 saw the return of Pi Chapter's Haunted House. In
conjunction with Mu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta and the Student Experimental Theatre, Pi Chapter raised more than $500 for the Greenhouse Shelter in
Meadville. This year, the Haunted House was set up on October 27th and 28th.
During Safe Sex Awareness Week, Pi Chapter sold "condom grams" to
promote safe sex and a better awareness of sexual responsibility throughout the
college community.
On February 22, the brothers and pledges of Pi Chapter participated in "Into
The Streets" service project. We distributed donated items such as furniture to
families in need and helped out at Special Olympics. We also helped clean the
Meadville Area Soup Kitchen and participated in other projects to help the
community.
In conjunction with IFC, we helped raise money for Multiple Sclerosis in a lip
sync competition. In March Pi Chapter, in conjunction with the area Jaycees,
visited senior citizens homes to serve food and visit with the residents.
Other spring projects included a volleyball tournament and picnic with the
college community and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. It was held near our new sand
volleyball court and was great fun for all.
The annual Downtown Community Cleanup, a yearly project of Pi Chapter,
also took place this spring and allowed us to give something back to the
Meadville Community.
Our extensive work with community service won Pi Chapter at the 1991-1992
Allegheny College Philanthropy Award. We at Pi Chapter feel that our participation in such projects will assure strong community relations for the chapter and
also help to better our awareness of the benefits of giving.

Fijis Visible on Allegheny Campus
Phi Gamma Delta was once again a front-runner in the Greek community in
1993. Our philanthropic and social services, along with our sociability and
unselfishness, make us the most appealing and well-liked fraternity on campus.
Relations with other fraternities have improved dramatically from past years
as we take a more pro-active stance in the Greek community. My term as IFC
President has given Pi Chapter a helpful liaison and accessibility to IFC. Nick
Gattozzi' s recent election to head of Greek Week, as well as Jason Marocco' s
election to IFC Rep., also gives Pi Chapter more visibility on campus.
As IFC president, my goals have been to leave the status quo behind and
completely restructure rush, reestablish and promote social life in the Greek
community, replace animosity with cohesiveness and cooperation between fraternities, and eliminate the negative stigma that Greeks have acquired from
faculty and administration the past two decades by facilitating a great deal of
educational programming and collaboration with administrators.
I hope our graduate brothers will come by to see the renovations and changes
for yourselves. Please feel free to write or call me at the chapter house if you
have any questions or suggestions regarding Pi Chapter or IFC.

Ed Maynard

Fijis Striving for Excellence
Brothers,
As scholarship chairman, I have initiated several new scholarship incentives
and structured some goals for our chapter.
Our fall 1992 semester grade point average was a 2. 71. This fell below the allfraternity average of 2. 75. To tum this decrease around, I implemented an
incentive plan to compliment brothers on improvement. Hopefully, this plan will
help us reach our goal of 2.85.
On the bright side, 23 brothers posted GPAs of 3.0 or better and nine brothers
topped 3 .2. Our cut-off point for scholarship checks was a3 .19 GPA, which was
much higher than the past three years. Jason Richey '93 had the top chapter GPA
with a 3.80 while Robert Ekin, class of '93 was most improved with a just from
2.07 to 3.07.
Remember, we strive for excellence. It is attained only when we fulfill .our
total potential. Mankind benefits when each ofus becomes all that we can be.

Andrew J. Barkley '94

Wrestling Hit by Cuts
1992 was the last year for Gator Wrestling at Allegheny. Athletic Director
Norm Sunstrum decided to phase out wresting because of budget cuts in athletics. Since that time the team has not been able to recruit, has only wrestled in
tournaments and has a women's soccer coach, John Wilcher, leading the team.
The cut comes as a great loss for Phi Gamma Delta since we have pledged so
many wrestlers in the past.
Last spring the Phi Garns were represented by senior Jason Richey. Jason was
the last four letterman and captain of the wrestling team. With the season cut in
half, Jason ended his season with a 20-11 record placing in every tournament but
one.
Although Jason barely missed qualifying for nationals for the third year in a
row, he did make a place for himself among other Phi Garns as one of Allegheny's
all-time winning wrestlers. In Allegheny wrestling history Brother Tony
Pendolino has the most wins with 136 followed by Jason Richey with 100. In
third is Brother Rich Kalizewski with 92. In addition to Jason's wrestling
success, he also was a leader in scholarship within the fraternity with a 3. 77
GP A. He is currently attending the University of North Carolina.
Reflections of a Past President
Looking back on my college career, I've seen many changes at Pi Chapter.
Different faces, a reconstructed house and the new BYOB policy are just a few of
the changes. But some things never change, such as the strong brotherhood and
all the fun that goes along with being a brother here.
Togetherness is at an all-time high and our new pledge class is looking to
continue the Fill tradition. Looking to the future, I just hope that my pledge
brothers and I can always remain in contact with the chapter.
I hope to see you all here at Island and Pig Dinner. Go Gators!
Always Proud to Be,
Wayne Mack

The Allegheny football team found
itself midway through the 1993 season with a 5-1 record. It ranks in the
top 10 nationally. This is the 100th
season of Allegheny football, marking
a century of excellence that once again
this year finds Phi Garns solidly providing a foundation.
Anchoring the offensive line are
tackles Eugene Skerkoski, Bill Wolfe
and Matt Allison. The backfield is led
by junior quarterback Paul Bell and
running backs Al Kaufman and Andy
Barkley. The wide receiver core is led
by senior Garth Selong and junior
stand-out Andy McKensie.
The mighty Gator defensive is led
by seniors Brad Deicas and Mark
Pellis, juniors Jamie Twist and Jim
Toth and sophomore Jim Sprouse.
Helping with coaching the linebackers is senior Jack Stokes. He
guides future linebackers Mike Bartollini and Brian Dorksen.
The last line of defense is led by
senior Marty Vaughn, who guides junior Brian Fenters and sophomore Pat
McMahon.

berth once again.

Newsletter Program Highlights Graduates
Beginning with this issue of Pi Crust, all brothers of Pi Chapter will be
receiving a graduate newsletter on a regular basis throughout the year.
The primary goal of the newsletter program is to bring our graduates into
closer contact with the chapter, carrying on the Phi Gamma Delta tradition of
brotherhood before and after graduation.
The program is designed to improve the frequency and regularity of communication between the undergraduate chapter and graduates by keeping all brothers informed about the chapter and about each other.
Not only will Pi Crust cover the latest in chapter news here at Pi, it will also
include an "Graduate Newsnotes" section to report on the accomplishments, lifestyle, views and comments of our graduate brothers. Personal notes, photographs, newspaper clippings and articles by graduates are encouraged and will be
used in future issues of the newsletter.
The program will be funded completely through voluntary contributions by
brothers of Pi Chapter and will show a team effort by graduates and undergraduates.
With the active chapter and graduates working together, the newsletter will be
a major improvement in keeping everyone informed and involved.
Your participation and support will ensure that Pi Crust becomes a Phi
Gamma Delta tradition here at Allegheny College.

PRESIDENT REVIEWS
(Continued from page 1)
made some structural improvements
to the chapter house. In the past couple
of years we have re-carpeted and refloored the entire downstairs, built a
new front addition on the chapter
house, refurnished the downstairs and
sealed a leaking basement.
On top of that we have just initiated
14 new pledges into the bonds of Pi
Chapter. These guys will make a great
addition to the brotherhood and I encourage you to come and meet them.
GOOD TIMES: Some of the best
brotherhood is found just hanging
out with other Phi Garns.
These guys will be in charge of two
philanthropy projects, a house project
and this semester's rush program.
As a chapter we are looking up.
With all of the new improvements we
look to become a better and stronger
Pi Chapter. I encourage you to come
and visit us anytime.

BradDeiCas
