Greetings Brothers!!!
I'd like to bring you up to date on what's
going on with your house.
Greek numbers are down across the country
and Alpha Iota has followed that trend. There
are currently about 40 men living in the chapter
house, with a comfortable capacity of about 60.
The Association Board has been stressing the
importance of rushing every year to
keep the facility full. There really is
no reason why this can't be accom
plished every year regardless of the
trends of the day.
You may have heard of the Uni
versity's changes in the residence
Department. 2 of the 4 Towers are
will get repairs if the bid is not too high.
We are also putting new locks on interior
and exterior doors. The Mary McCarty
(Parents) Club is putting their auction
money towards sprucing up the ladies'
restroom with new paint, baseboard, car
pet, blinds, and maybe some art.

are $90 million with a slight decrease in the
number of beds. In my view, the Greeks in
general and Phi Gamma Delta in particular will
need to step up all aspects of our organization.
Facilities will need to improve, programming
will need adjustments, and chapter tone will
have to be good enough to draw students from
the residence halls or the off-campus rentals.
The days of students coming to the Greeks are
gone. We will need to go to the prospects to be
successful.

newsletters and seen the accomplishments of

is why I'd say we'd enjoy seeing you again.
Won't you share the joy of these accomplish

Fiji's Ride High With Pole Sit
By Pole Sit Co-Clialr Jacob Johnson,'99
Every year. Phi Gamma Delta undertakes
one of the strangest philanthropies on the
Iowa State campus. Each year, the Fiji's take
turns climbing into a 6" x 6" basket atop a
30' swaying telephone pole to raise money
for various charitable oruanizations.
This year, the PhiGams have invited the
women of Delta Zeta to help support the Alzheitner's Association. The fraternity is hop
ing to raise $5000 for this cause.
In the past, the fraternity has raised
tnoney for the Boys and Girls Club of Ames,
and the Ames City Fire Depaittnent.
While at first look one's better judgement

would dictate staying on the ground, the pole
has proven to be safe. In fact, the pole is
equipped with electric blankets, telephone,
TV, and VCR.
The pole is manned throughout the week
before the annual
VEISHEA
celebration.
This year, we will be starting the day after
Pig Dinner. The pole will be erected earlier
that week, so the visiting alums will be able
to inspect the pole for themselves.
To help raise money this year the broth
ers intend to keep track of the donors and
raffle off restaurant dinners and other gifts
from local area sponsors.
This year the pole is due for a structural
overhaul. Pole Sit Co-Chair Mason Eggleston says, "We're going to raise the rail
ing so the taip will be higher off the floor.
And we'll replace the floor and the supports
of the basket to make it more stable in the
wind."
